Golden State Warriors New Arena: I was an integral team member from concept through the end of schematic design. As a team member, I helped make the Project Designer’s concepts and sketches reality by drafting, picking up red-lines, and small design tasks. I developed and managed matrices and diagrams for pre permitting documents. I arranged and drafted the main and upper concourses.

Development of Proprietary Concepts: I was the leader of a team that updated a proprietary modular stadium design concept into Revit. We created fully scheduled modular units and arrangement diagrams to facilitate a streamlined, modular design process. I led the team in developing presentations for internal use and marketing for the concept.

The Lawrence Performing Arts Center and Operatic Theatre is the 110,000 square foot home of the Free State Opera Company. The building houses all of the spaces and shops for the producing opera company. A 300-car parking garage is included to serve the busy massachusetts street downtown district and accommodate patrons. The performing arts center is centered around the 1,200-seat opera theatre, and the 400-seat recital hall it contains.

In conceiving the form for this project, my partner and I took on the challenge of creating a megastructure to combine the seemingly disparate uses of the building. A large orange bulb floats over the lobby and recital hall. The tension of the space between the opera theatre and recital hall creates a new level of intrigue in the lobby, the social reason for this building.

The building faces south to welcome patrons from the downtown district. The parking garage orients itself to the north to welcome traffic off of sixth street and I-70.

The form is dominated by three distinct parts: the infrastructural role of the parking garage, the rigid programatic stage and backstage mass, and the more expressive auditoria and lobby.

The overlapping panels and backlighting articulate the surfaces and help distribute sound throughout the recital hall. When the lights dim, the space is the perfect backdrop for an ensemble performance.

The vertical circulation becomes a prominent formal gesture and provides performing arts patrons with space to see and be seen.

The KU Field Station Gateway was a Dirt Works Studio design-build project. In this studio I was faced with a new series of challenges: a client, a budget, and a 16-person design team. The gateway was designed and built in one semester, was completed under the $8,000 budget, and was delivered on time. The project delivers in its demarkation of place by separating the public and private space, and through its layers of signage. I was awarded the position of head project architect, as such I was in charge of the synthesis of ideas that led to the project’s design as well as the production of construction documents.

The gateway’s form was derived from the ecotone that the project lies on, a division of nature, and a division of property. With a material palate of earth and forest, the rammed earth wall emerges from the earth of the prairie as a wide mass and reaches into the trees of the forest to a slender, wood-capped peak.

Page 24: Scott Stoops Portfolio
Page 25: Scott Stoops Portfolio
Page 26: Scott Stoops Portfolio

The stabilized rammed earth wall was optimized to use the least cement possible by supplementing fly ash in its place. The wall is capped by a shou-sugi-ban style cedar scupper fastened with stainless steel nuts.

This design-build project allowed me to experiment with materials, taught me about the iterative process of design, and gave me leadership experience. As the head designer I was asked to lead many steps along the way; I coordinated our concrete work, lead the steel team that reinvented the cattle gate, and headed the masonry team. I learned how much a project can change from conception to completion. As a team, we faced many challenges and had to devise strategies for how to overcome them. The KU Field Station Gateway project was the first time I took on a leadership role in an architectural setting; this studio gave me a taste of what it would be like as a project team leader in the profession.

golden State warriorS arena

A new arena for the Golden State Warriors has been in development since mid-2013 and has undergone many design and personnel changes. I was a member of the project team from the end of concept design through the end of schematic design. At MANICA Architecture, a firm of 7-15 people, everyone’s input is considered and everyone takes an active role in the formation of the design. The 18,000-seat event center and arena is only part of the 11 acre, 1.5 million square foot development. Two mid-rise office/retail towers flank a large public plaza in front of the event center. A smaller restaurant and retail building faces the bay. All of this sits on a multi-level at-grade and below-grade parking facility for nearly 950 cars.

The Golden State Warriors hope to not only build a state-of-the-art event center capable of housing NBA games and concert events, they want to provide an avenue for growth in the booming Mission Bay South neighborhood. The project will trigger the completion of the bayside park and other infrastructure improvements as well as providing high-end office space to the overflowing business community.

One of the key milestones for this project was the completion of the major phase document that coincided with the end of the schematic design phase. This document is the first step in a long process for city zoning approval and permitting. For this document, I developed and managed many diagrams and matrices. I learned about the politics of large scale architecture through one of the most political projects in the country.

My personal responsibilities while on this project were on many facets, with different software, and at varying scales. Early in the development of the current scheme, I modeled the project in Sketchup and integrated daily changes from the design team at large. Implementing a new sheet process for the office in AutoCAD considerably reduced the time spent picking up red-lines and printing. Throughout the project I picked up red-lines and helped maintain the master area matrix.

Over time I became an integral member of the arena design team. Arranging several program spaces on the event level, including staff lockers, event lockers, and media spaces, I was able to gain knowledge of the NBA Arena Standards. I laid out the visitor amenities on the main and upper concourses, updating fixture matrices and keeping the building compliant with the NBA Arena Standards and the California Building Code based on the changing design and seating numbers. Maintaining the section parti and elevation comparison diagram throughout the project helped illustrate the different floors.

As a member of the major phase document team I helped incorporate comments and produce content. Creating the graphic site plan helped the documents diverse diagrams have a cohesive look. I produced illustrative building sections for the arena and the office towers. Creating and maintaining matrices became one of my tasks to help keep the document on schedule.

I was in charge of drafting documents for mock-ups of the luxury products to be built for sales purposes, as well as designing and preparing drawings for the sales center that will be used to sell the luxury products of the event center.

reflection

Through this project I learned about the complexity and personnel involved in large scale architectural work. This project was subject to the NBA Arena Design Standards, the California Building Code, and the San Francisco Mission Bay South Design for Development documents; I was able to work closely with each of these throughout my time on the project and ensure compliance. I gained professional experience in AutoCAD, Sketchup, Photoshop, and several other programs. As an intern working on many different projects, under several different people, I learned to manage other people’s expectations of how I would manage my time and successfully completed the work requested of me. I was able to see the evolution of the design and learned from the input of the design professionals on the project, the public, the city, the owners, and countless others.

In my journey through architecture school I have often asked myself why I chose this career. I used to think I was in it for prestige and money but after six years of college I have found a different answer.

I want to be an architect so that I can leave my mark on the world. I want to work at the edge of art and science. I want to be an innovator. I want to make a difference in the lives of people. I want my work to be original. I want to be an active participant in a business. I want to be a professional. I want to work on and lead teams. I want to help others achieve their goals. I want my work to mean something to people, whether they know I was the architect or not.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
