OD-Communicable and infectious diseases
1: What is a Listeriosis?
Invasive disease due to a Listeria monocytogenes infection
Population at risk (pregnant women, elderly
or immunocompromised)
Mortality reaching up to 20-30%
OD-Communicable and infectious diseases
1: Listeria: 6-7 species
L. monocytogenes
L. ivanovii
L. innocua
L. grayi
L. seeligeri
L. welshimeri
+ L. marrayii?
1: Listeria monocytogenes
• Classical typing: 13 serotypes
OD-Communicable and infectious diseases
1: Sources of contamination
• Widespread in the environment
• Resistant: T between 0ºC - 50ºC
• Zoonosis
OD-Communicable and infectious diseases

Products with raw milk
Salmon/ Sliced fish
Prepared dishes
Incubation period:
few days to 3 months
OD-Communicable and infectious diseases
1:European Directive
Directive EC Nº2073/2005 (Nov 2005)
• Absence in 25g (products for new-born and therapeutic purposes)
• Absence in 25g (In products that enable the development of LM) unless the product meets the limit of 100 LM/gr
• In products that do not allow the development of LM: 100 LM limit/gr
OD-Communicable and infectious diseases
2: National Reference Centre of Listeria
• Exists since 1966, data collected since 1985, Officially recognised by
INAMI in 2010
2015:
• Human isolates:160 from clinical laboratories
• Food isolates : AFSCA + + Food industries
Serotyping for confirmation of the diagnosis, identification of the source of infection, control of the products and a better understanding of the epidemiology of Listeria.
