5 A group of students found that the level of water pollution in the area they are living in has reached acritical point. Due to human activities, waste matter from industrial and domestic sources which are

dissolved or suspended in water contributes to the deterioration of the water quality. The waterquality is tested by using methylene blue solution. The shorter the time taken for the methylene blue solution to turn clear, the less dissolved oxygen there is. Hence, the water is contaminated.
Sekumpulan pelajar mendapati bahawa tahap pencemaran air di kawasan tempat tinggal merekatelah mencapai tahap kritikal. Mereka telah menjalankan suatu eksperimen untuk menyiasat tahappencemaran di dalam air dari sumber-sumber yang berbeza. Tahap pencemaran air diuji denganmenggunakan larutan metilena biru. Semakin singkat masa yang diambil untuk larutan metilena birubertukar menjadi jernih, semakin kurang kandungan oksigen terlarut. Maka semakin tercemar air itu.
The following is the procedures of the investigation.Berikut ialah prosedur bagi penyiasatan itu.
(i) Water samples from three different sources of water (tap, river and well) are collected.Sampel air daripada tiga sumber yang berbeza (air pili, sungai dan telaga) dikumpulkan.
(ii) The water samples are poured into three separate reagent bottles.Sampel-sampel air dimasukkan ke dalam tiga botol reagen yang berbeza.
(iii) 1 ml of methylene blue solution is added into each sample by using a syringe.1 ml larutan metilena biru dimasukkan ke dalam setiap botol menggunakan picagari.
(iv) The reagent bottles are closed with stoppers and placed in a dark cupboard.Botol reagent ditutup dengan penutup dan diletakkan pada keadaan gelap dalam sebuah almari.
(v) The colour of the solution in each bottle is observed every hour.Warna larutan dalam botol diperhatikan setiap satu jam.
(vi) The time taken for each water sample to turn colourless is recorded.Masa yang diambil bagi warna sampel air menjadi luntur dicatatkan.

2. Nitrogen from fertilizers, manure, waste and ammonia turns into nitrite and nitrate.Nitrate combines
with the water.This will poison the aquatic creatures and end up killing the animals,fish.plants.
3. Industrial waste like oil can’t dissolve in water. This can stop marine plants receiving enough light for photosynthesis.the aquatic animals will not get enough oxygen and die and oil get stuck to the feathers of seabirds causing them to lose their ability to fly.______________________________________________________________
