Dear Reader, I offer you a warm welcome to SKOLA.

My family started connecting with students over 40 years ago. Since then we have developed a wide range of schools here in the UK. The following pages show the breadth of our current offer. At the heart of each course lies the same idea: that education is all about making connections.

For a student, relocating to a new country, with or without the family, is a challenging process.

We place our students at the heart of our thinking as we help them settle into their new surroundings. Our wide range of courses gives students great freedom of choice as they develop their own sense of identity and the confidence to achieve more than they thought possible.

Schools should be a safe place in which to learn. Each student should be challenged at the right time according to his or her learning journey. The expertise our teachers have comes from rigorous training in British and International education institutions. This equips them with the power to create the lessons each student needs for the best possible educational outcomes.

This may be the first connection we make, but I hope it leads to many more.

Academic CurriculaReflecting our belief in diversity, we offer two alternative routes to reaching the academic qualifications you need for university entrance. Each route to qualification has its own distinct characteristics and may be particularly well-suited for students with certain ambitions in mind.

We believe both systems – the National Curriculum of England and Wales and the International Baccalaureate – have much to offer and have seen pupils excel within both frameworks.

45 yearsof experience in running academic schools

It is worth noting that the gap between the National Curriculum of England and Wales and the International Baccalaureate has become smaller in recent years, as both systems continue to strive for excellence. Students seeking to pursue academic studies at a SKOLA school may wish to seek the advice of our experienced professionals in deciding which route may be best suited for them and how to orient their studies in line with ambitions for higher education.

Leading to GCSEs, typically at 16 years old, and GCE Advanced Levels (A Levels), typically at 18.

These qualifications can be taken in a wide range of subjects. At A Level, students typically select three (or, on rare occasions, four) to study for two years. UK universities make offers of places based on predicted scores at grades A-E in final A Level examinations. It is generally understood that A Levels offer deeper study in a smaller number of academic disciplines than the IB framework. For some students, this mode of assessment better suits their needs.

Offered at Alexanders College (see page 4)

National Curriculum of England and Wales

From 3 to 11 years old (PYP), 11 to 16 years old (MYP) and finally the IB Diploma, typically achieved at 18 years of age.

This framework is administered by the independent International Baccalaureate Organisation and much like A Levels, has a high level of international recognition. It consists of a suite of six subjects, chosen from groups in languages, mathematics, natural sciences, humanities and the arts, studied over two years and assessed through a mixture of terminal examinations and coursework. The Diploma also requires completion of an Extended Essay research project, besides involvement in physical activities, the arts and community service. As with UK A Levels, British universities make offers of places based on predicted scores in certain subjects as well as a total for the whole Diploma.

Offered at Newland College (see page 6) and the International Community School (see page 8)

Page 6 Secondary Boarding School – Newland College

IntroductionNewland College is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school set in the stunning Chilterns Hills, often described as the first piece of countryside after you leave London. Surrounded by gently rolling hills, charming villages and working farms, Newland College is a purpose-built education environment and uses the latest thinking in education to support students to achieve their full potential.

We are an inclusive school that uses the rigorous IB Middle Years Programme for students aged 11 to 16 years, and currently hold Candidate School status. For students aged 16 to 18, we will offer the IB Diploma, one of the world’s most recognised qualifications for university entrance, as it prepares students for the academic demands of undergraduate study like no other framework.

Courses• IB Diploma

Newland College plans to offer the prestigious IB Diploma programme to students aged 16 to 18 years from 2018. This internationally known and highly regarded programme comprises a standard curriculum, moderated coursework and external examinations. Research in the UK shows that following the IB Diploma, students are more likely to achieve placements at high quality universities and are significantly less likely to drop out of university.

• IB Middle Years Programme Newland College is a Candidate School for the IB Middle Years Programme, which will allow us to teach the MYP to our first cohort of 11 to 13 year olds from September 2015. This is an academically challenging framework, with eight discrete subject areas (English, Modern Languages, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Arts, Technology, and Physical Education) that encourage students to embrace and understand connections between the subject content and the real world, while developing critical and reflective thinking skills. Also running through the programme are three central themes; inter-cultural awareness, holistic learning and communication.

Opening in 2015In September 2015, Newland College opens its doors to its foundation cohort of 11 to 13 year-olds. Located in beautiful parkland and surrounded by the picturesque countryside of the Newland Park estate in the Chilterns, the College benefits from outstanding facilities and an unrivalled location. Newland College celebrates the very best of the English boarding school tradition within the acclaimed International Baccalaureate (IB) framework. It offers full boarding, flexi-boarding and day student places for local and international students.

Classrooms equipped with the latest technology have been designed around a standard class-size of 14 students, providing an exceptional level of teacher-student engagement. The IB has led the world for its provision of student-centric, internationally-minded learning. While the English A-Level curriculum and IB become have more aligned in recent years, research shows the IB is the better preparation for undergraduate study.

Newland College offers high-standard residential accommodation, with personal study space provided for boarding and day students. The sports facilities are extensive, with all-weather pitches and courts. Newland College is also home to a 250-capacity purpose-built theatre, one of the largest school theatres in the county of Buckinghamshire.

Dedicated to the education of the whole child, whether in the classroom, sporting field, drama studio or concert hall, Newland College values creativity, enthusiasm, inquisitiveness and the bold expression of ideas. Building a community of learners, teachers as well as students, who support and collaborate to succeed and find a balance in their life, Newland College offers something new to students seeking to undertake the rigorous IB in a supportive environment.

“My son enjoys the school and it has made him more keen to learn, ask many questions and given him more confidence.” Father of student

IntroductionWe are an inclusive, international school that uses the rigorous International Baccalaureate programme at all levels from three years to eighteen. Our Primary School is located in central London and has 125 students in classes of 14-22 students. We challenge each student by setting tasks, activities and inquiries at a level and with support tailored to each child’s needs. We have a proud track record of helping students exceed their own expectations during their time with us.

Our school day runs from 08.45-15.25 with a 14.10 finish on Fridays. From Year 3 upwards all children have the use of a netbook and all materials are provided by the School. Students have access to iPads and desktops for desktop publishing and film editing and those with Special Educational Needs have exceptional provision.

Courses• IB PYP Full Curriculum

All children aged 3 -11 years old follow the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP). The programme allows children to learn through the skills and knowledge of traditional subject areas such as Languages, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, the Arts, Personal and Social Education and Information Communication Technology. These subjects are taught through Units of Inquiry that provide opportunities for students to apply skills and knowledge. Classes from Year 1 to Year 6 are actively involved in six units of inquiry per year, each one lasting around six weeks in length. Nursery and Reception experience four units of inquiry throughout the whole year.

• English Language PreparationOur Preparation course for 9, 10 and 11 year olds prepares students for entry into the full curriculum programme. Students study grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading and writing, and develop academic and everyday English. They also study a range of other academic subjects such as Humanities, Science and Mathematics through units of enquiry. Children younger than 10 years of age enter the mainstream classroom directly with support provided in class.

Junior English – Discover London

NEW FOR 2015Outdoor LearningIntroductionWe try every year to bring new educational theory and practice into our courses. Two of our most innovative courses take advantage of the idea that learning performance can be enhanced if it is done in a relevant context: the real world. Discover London and the Forest School provide students with an engaging environment in which to learn English, plus they offer the chance to gain additional vocabulary and skills, based on the learning context.

Forest School Summer School 11-14 years

The CourseSKOLA English in Exeter has teamed up with the Exmouth Forest School to design an English Language course for juniors that takes place entirely outdoors. Over the course of two weeks, students will spend six hours each day exploring the exciting outdoors in a beautiful and safe forest outside the town of Exmouth in the south of Devon.

Learning English in the natural environment is more lively and fun, and gives students an instant connection with the subject matter of the language they are learning. There will be the chance to integrate with local children during certain weeks of the course, who will attend the Forest School alongside SKOLA students, giving them a unique opportunity to talk with native speakers, and quickly progress their English.

This course will also provide a rich education about the life of the forest, exploring and using natural materials in a safe environment and with expert tuition. Parents report changes in independence, motivation, self-esteem and social outlook. Students are encouraged to discover wild places and show their appreciation of the environment and respect for nature and conservation. They will present their thoughts in English to other students which will be recorded on video and sent to the parents. All students will be given the opportunity to gain the John Muir Award, named after the founder of the first National Parks.

Our teaching staff are trained Forest School leaders and our SKOLA English language teachers are all native speakers and trained to teach English as a foreign language. There is a staff to student ratio of 1 – 8.

Introduction Gloucester Gate provides a tailor-made English language school environment, with all the classroom, outdoor and ancillary facilities you would expect from a quality day school. All classes combine intensive English language tuition with outdoor, sport and cultural learning. All children’s courses include a snack and a hot lunch.

Parents can study too! We offer the opportunity for both parents and children to study at the same time in central London. Parents study at our fabulous adult summer school, ‘London Baker Street’, which is less than 5 minutes by taxi or a 30 minute walk through Regent’s Park from the children’s school. Adult courses start one hour later than junior courses.

Page 32 Junior Welfare, Transport, Accommodation & Insurance

Junior Welfare, Accommodation, Transport & InsuranceAfter decades of running junior English courses, we know that the best learning environments are also the safest. All our staff are trained in student welfare and our facilities have all been designed with the age group we use them for in mind. We call this safeguarding for better learning, and it is a core SKOLA principle.

AccommodationWe offer both residential and non-residential courses. Where our courses are non-residential, we can offer students aged 11 to 18 homestay accommodation.

Ascot, Newland College & Alexanders College

At these centres, all students are accommodated in school residences on campus. Boys and girls are in separate residences or on separate floors. During the Academic Year at Alexanders College, students are in rooms with 1-3 beds; during summer all bedrooms have 2, 3 or 4 beds. At Ascot College the rooms contain 2-6 beds and the accommodation at Newland College is in single rooms. Unless requested otherwise by all parents involved, children sharing together will be of different mother tongues where possible. Most bedrooms contain washbasins, but bathroom and toilet facilities are shared. All accommodation is full-board with breakfast, lunch and evening meal provided and snacks are available.

London Homestay Accommodation

The minimum age for unaccompanied children in homestay is 11 years old. All our homestay hosts are selected by partner accommodation agencies specialised in providing suitable and appropriate accommodation for children. Hosts are chosen only after a strict application process, inspection and police checks. A safe, caring and clean home is more important than a location close to the schools. Generally homes are in London travel zones 2 and 3, with an average journey of 30-45 minutes to school on public transport, which can be up to 60 minutes in busy periods.

Hosts speak English in the home. Hosts can be born in any country or be of any ethnic origin. Junior homestay accommodation includes breakfast and evening meal every day and lunch or packed lunch at weekends. Weekday lunches are included in course fees and provided at school. Parent and Child Homestay Accommodation

Parents are responsible for their own children outside school hours and in the accommodation. This means the parent is also responsible for the child travelling to and from school and when they arrive home from school. If the child has been booked onto our mini-bus service the parent must be at home to greet them in the afternoon. Parent and child homestay includes breakfast and evening meal every day. Weekend lunch is not included. Homes are normally in London travel zones 2-3 but can also be in zone 4 from June to August.

TransportSchool Minibus Service in London

For peace of mind, safety and convenience you can choose the SKOLA school minibus service for your child. You can authorise a child aged 14-17 to travel on public transport, or choose the school bus service. Children under 14 cannot travel alone to school and must use the bus service or come and go with an adult. The bus service is not available for adults. It must be requested and paid for in advance. The bus service aims for a maximum journey time of 45 minutes to or from school. In busy periods this can be up to 60 minutes.

InsuranceWe strongly advise you to take out your own travel insurance, but our course prices for juniors do include provision of a Travel, Medical and Course Fees Protection Insurance for students studying at Alexanders College, Camden and summer courses at any of our junior schools.

WelfareWelfare in Homestay Accommodation

Parents, children and hosts are provided with 24 hour contact telephone numbers for the accommodation agencies and the schools. SKOLA has a dedicated staff member to assist you or your child with any problems or questions regarding accommodation. Children are asked regularly during their stay about their accommodation, the food and their happiness with the arrangements. All their feedback is read and followed up if necessary and feedback on hosts is recorded and monitored.

The minimum age for unaccompanied children in homestay is 11 years old. Unaccompanied children younger than 14 years must use the school bus service.

Welfare in Residential Accommodation

The students and their welfare are our main priority. We maintain very close supervision of students at all times, to ensure their safety and well-being and that they obtain the maximum benefit from their course.

Our 24 hour emergency telephone numbers are issued to students and their parents as part of the Information Pack. A member of staff can be contacted at any time should students encounter any problem or difficulty. Medical support is always available, with First Aid trained staff on site. The school procedures – which the students are expected to follow - are explained to the students during the induction session on the first morning.

IntroductionMany parents come to SKOLA with their children to study English. Parents study in our fabulous London Baker Street centre during the summer or our school in Soho during the rest of the year, both in central London. Children’s classes begin 09:00 and Parent’s classes begin at 10:00, giving parents time to take their children to school. There is a choice of finishing times for both adult and junior classes. Please contact us to find the courses which suit you best. Travel time between the schools ranges from a 5 minute walk to a 20 minute bus or tube ride. Page 36 Adult English Courses

Adult English CoursesWe have learned over many years that the best tuition is centred on the needs of the student, and consequently we take a communicative approach to teaching and learning. This builds not only language skills, but confidence. We offer a variety of English courses for adults. Each has a different focus and we are confident we have a course to suit every student.

Our adult courses are based on a weekly cycle of teaching, classwork, discussion, tutorial and self-study:

Classes are student-centred and include pair/group work, discussions, debates, role-play, activities, projects: all designed to activate your English

• Weekly planners are designed by teachers to ensure each week’s work satisfies student and curricular demands

• There are elements of language systems (pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar) and language skills incorporated in the syllabus

• Weekly progress tests check students’ achievements

• Students self-evaluate their work and the teacher assesses their development suggesting ways of improvement

• Extra support is offered when it is necessary and individual learning plans are completed every Friday making it possible to monitor every student’s progress

• Tutorials provide a more personal opportunity to discuss educational needs and negotiate some learning goals, which can be recorded and then reviewed the following week

• There is a variety of materials used in every class; popular EFL publications which create the core syllabus for each level are often supplemented with online, authentic and practical materials.
