Course Description (Catalog) This course will introduce the student to the fundamentals of the Russian language using an online immersion technique developed by RosettaStone. The student will learn basic vocabulary, verb conjugations, and grammatical usage through online listening, speaking, reading and writing exercises. The student will also learn about Russian culture. This course must be completed prior to taking RUSS101, Russian II. Please note the technical specifications below. These are required to interface with the online version of RosettaStone. If you cannot meet these requirements we strongly recommend you do not take this course. Please contact [email protected] if you are unsure or have any questions about the following: The ability to download and install the speech component. A working microphone installed on the computer for speech recognition.

Course Scope

This online language course is designed to establish an elementary understanding of the Russian language. Students will learn all the necessary skills to continue to expand their knowledge in the target language. Students will be able to successfully write Russian script and will be able to grasp fundamental grammar objectives. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to read, write, and speak the Russian language at a fundamental level.

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to: • Understand and demonstrate the use of core Russian grammar and gradually build up a

working vocabulary of its most common words and expressions. • Develop ability to communicate well (speaking and writing) in a variety of daily contexts. • Read and comprehend simple descriptions, narratives, and authentic materials. • Simultaneously incorporate and apply four basic language skills (listening, speaking,

reading, and writing) for effective communication. • Learn about the Russian culture through dynamic, functional, and practical activities.

Course Delivery Method This course delivered via distance learning will enable students to complete academic work in a flexible manner, completely online. Course materials and access to an online learning management system will be made available to each student. Online assignments are due by Sunday evening of the week as noted and include Forum discussions, examination, and individual assignments submitted for review by the Faculty Member. Assigned faculty will support the students throughout this sixteen-week course.

RUSS100 is designed for a 16-week course and will include the four units of Level One of RosettaStone V3. The instructor will provide ample course material covering grammar and concepts introduced in RosettaStone. Grading for RUSS100 is based on 100 points.

RosettaStone Activities: You have to complete ALL the activities in each out of the four units in Level 1 in RosettaStone with at least 85% of correct answers. You will receive 4 points for a given unit ONLY if you complete all the activities in a given unit in RosettaStone. Supplemental Readings: You will have to study the grammar notes in Course Materials for each Unit. These notes explain certain linguistic aspects of the activities in RosettaStone. For the detailed instructions, read the document "Class Notes" in Resources (under Course Tools), folder "Course Information." Discussion Forum Assignments: There will be eight graded Discussion Forum assignments for this course. For the detailed instructions on what is expected from you and how to "russify" your computer, read the documents "Discussion Forum Assignments," “Discussion Forum Rubric,” and "How to Russify Your Computer" in Resources (under Course Tools), folder "Course Information." Unit Quizzes: Each of the four units will include one quiz worth 10 points for a total of 40 possible points. Each quiz will contain 20 matching, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, true/false, and essay types of questions. Oral Recorded Presentations: Oral Recorded Presentations consist of answering to a series of simple Russian questions, based on the activities in corresponding units in RosettaStone. For the detailed instructions, read the document "Oral Recorded Presentations" in Resources (under Course Tools), folder "Course Information." Final Project: The Final Project worth 12 points has to be completed by Sunday night of the last week of classes. The guidelines for the Final Project can be found in the Assignments area of the course.
