Biology Summer Research ExperienceScholarships These scholarships are available on academic merit to students enrolled in biology undergraduate programs. The purpose of the scholarships is to provide project-based work experience opportunities during the summer vacation. Commonwealth Learning Scholarships The Commonwealth Learning Scholarships are part of the Commonwealth Government’s Higher Education Reforms passed in December 2003. Their goal is to increase participation of students from low socio-eco-nomic and rural backgrounds by providing them with financial assistance. Two levels of scholarships are avail­able ($2000 and $4000 a year) and renewal is contingent on a grade point average of 2.0. Schalchlin Memorial Actuarial Scholarship These scholarships are available to students who are enrolled in or are intending to enrol in the Bachelor of Commerce – Actuarial Studies program or a combined actuarial studies program. They are available to both high school leavers and continuing Macquarie University stu­dents. Candidates must be permanent residents of Australia. The scholarships are awarded based on acade­mic merit, financial need and the personal circumstances of the applicant. The scholarships are tenable for one year and valued at $2500. Applicants who already hold any other scholarship or award, other than Youth Allowance, will only be eligible to receive the scholarship with the permission of the donor. Honours Scholarships – Accounting, Finance and Economics The Division of Economic and Financial Studies offers up to three Honours Scholarships per year in the areas of Accounting and Finance, and Economics. The scholar­ships are awarded to full-time students on the basis of academic merit in their Bachelor degree program. The standard of academic achievement is measured by the student’s grade point average (or equivalent). To be eligi­ble students must be accepted into either the Honours program in the Department of Accounting and Finance or the Honours Degree of Bachelor of Economics. Up to four scholarships will be available in each College, valued at $5,000 for one year for a full-time candidate, and $2,500 per year over two years for a part-time candidate. Macquarie University InnovationScholarships These scholarships will be available for students who apply for the first time in 2004 for a place through the Universities Admissions Centre. An Innovation scholar­ship may be offered to students who are obtaining a 2004 Australian Year 12 Qualification. The scholarships will be distributed evenly across all programs of study.

Students need to be Australian citizens or permanent res­idents to receive this scholarship. Maximum and mini­mum UAI may vary across each Macquarie Academic Division based on the quantity and quality of applica­tions. The range of UAI that will be considered are from 99.49 to approximately 98.50. The scholarships are val­ued at $2500 and are tenable for the first year of study only. Macquarie University Super InnovationScholarships These scholarships will be available for students who apply for the first time in 2004 for a place through the Universities Admissions Centre. A Super Innovation scholarship will be offered to all students who are obtain­ing a 2004 Australian Year 12 Qualification, and who achieve a Universities Admissions Index (UAI) of 99.5 or above. Students need to be Australian citizens or perma­nent residents to be eligible for this scholarship. The scholarships are valued at $2500 for each year of the stu­dents’ program of study subject to maintaining an overall grade point average of 3.5 and higher. Sports Scholarships In 2004, 61 athletes from 18 sports were awarded Sport Scholarships.
