Presenter Profiles

Nicky Leggatt (IAP2 UK and Ireland Director, 2009-2010)

Nicky Leggatt is head of Stakeholder Engagement, Communications and Community Liaison for Jacobs, and is the UK President of IAP2. Nicky has nearly 20 years experience in the communications field and has been responsible for driving best practice in the UK and advises UK Government and its agencies on policy. Nicky works across a large and diverse portfolio of clients and works with them to improve how their participation and engagement processes are delivered. She is currently working with a range of organisations in the development of an International Standard in Stakeholder Engagement in an attempt to bring

benchmarking and clear evaluation into the field.

Prior to her work in the consultation and participation field, Nicky worked in the UK Media industry and won awards for her innovative approaches to communication and engagement.

Alex Inman (IAP2 UK and Ireland Director, 2009-2010)

Alex Inman is an independent environmental management consultant specialising in social research, public participation (engagement) and technology transfer relating to environmental problems and solutions. Alex's particular research expertise includes consumer behaviour relating to the usage of natural resources, and public understanding of the environmental impact of human activities.

Nick Taylor (Scarborough’s Renaissance Manager)

Nick Taylor was born and educated in Bolton, and following two years at sea returned to study Hotel Management at Sheffield Polytechnic – now Sheffield Hallam University. Following twenty years managing a wide range of hotels around the country, Nick took on the role of Scarborough’s Renaissance Manager. Nick’s role involved engaging the community through public participation, then linking them with the local council and Regional Development Agency to deliver projects around the town to improve the economic viability and sustainability of the place.

The high level of engagement and participation in Scarborough has resulted in a number of awards including Britain’s Most Enterprising Town in 2008, Europe’s Most Enterprising place, awarded in Prague in May 2009, the Academy of Urbanism Great Town in 2010 and the IAP2 Project of the Year Award 2009.

Simon Burall (Director of Involve)

Simon Burall is the Director of Involve. He has long and extensive experience the fields of democratic reform, governance, public participation, stakeholder engagement, and accountability and transparency. He has worked at the national level in Africa, Asia and Europe as well as on related issues of global governance and democracy.

In addition to his role with Involve, Simon is also the Chair of Democratic Audit, an Ambassador for WWF UK and a member of the Steering Committee of the ScienceWise Expert Resource Centre. Before moving to Involve Simon was a Research Fellow at ODI from

2006 - 2009. His interests included stakeholder engagement in the reform of the international aid delivery system and how to make development finance more effective. Prior to this he was the Executive Director of the One World Trust from 1999 - 2005 where he initiated and oversaw the development of the influential Global Accountability Index. Before joining the Trust, Simon re-established the UK volunteer network for AFS, an organisation based in Leeds co-ordinating intercultural exchange visits. Simon has taught both science and English in Namibia and Zimbabwe and was an election monitor in Bosnia Herzegovina in 1997.

Deiniol Tegid (Communications Business Partner, Environment Agency Wales)

A former local newspaper journalist, Deiniol Tegid worked for BBC Wales for three years before moving into public relations with BT. In seventeen years with the company he filled a number of communications roles including Head of Public Relations for Wales, Head of Communications for BT Wholesale and Head of Mobility Communications for BT Wholesale.

Deiniol joined the Environment Agency Wales as a Communications Business Partner in 2008. In this role Deiniol is responsible for the communications on the Dee and Clwyd Flood Risk Management

Strategies in North Wales. The strategies were shortlisted as finalists for the IAP2 Project of the Year award 2010. Some of his strongest professional interests revolve around promoting the use of plain English (and Welsh!) in technical or scientific areas and encouraging public engagement.
