Bricks and mortar preservation efforts play a critical role in developing lasting and robust neighborhoods for the future. At the same time, the people who call these neighborhoods home are the backbone of every community. Looking through the lens of asset-based community development, this discussion will explore the intersection between preservation and social justice, with the aim of aligning both interests toward the common good for all residents.

10:30 - 11:30 A.M. – SESSION 1 Researching Your Property | Room 201 A PRESENTERS: Jennifer Honebrink, Architect, and Caitlin Kolb, Historic Preservationist, both at Alley Poyner Macchietto ArchitectureUsing local examples, Jennifer and Caitlin will illustrate how to start your research project on your home or business, talk through where to find a variety of resources and provide tips to overcome common research hurdles.

Is it Historic? Applying the National Register Criteria for Evaluation | Room 201 DPRESENTER: Ruben Acosta, National Register and CLG Coordinator at the Nebraska State Historic Preservation Office Fifty years ago, the federal government established the National Register of Historic Places in order to document historic properties, objects and sites across the United States. This session will cover the National Park Service’s Criteria for Evaluation, including the area of significance criteria, integrity criteria and selected criteria considerations as well as share example properties.

Infill and Redevelopment Guidelines | Room 201 EPRESENTER: Jed Moulton, Urban Design and Preservation Manager, City of OmahaJed will present background and issues related to the Infill and Redevelopment Guidelines recently adopted by the City of Omaha. In this session you will learn how existing zoning does or does not protect older neighborhoods, the nature of compatibility from a preservation and regulatory perspective and the primary impacts the guideline will provide.

Greening Omaha’s Neighborhoods | Room 201 FPRESENTERS: Linda Lovgren, President of Lovgren Marketing Group and Public Participation Facilitator for the Clean Solutions for Omaha (CSO) and John Royster, Landscape Architect and Founder of Big Muddy Workshop CSO is designed to improve the water quality in our local rivers and streams by 2027. Linda and John will share the benefits the program brings to the community and how green infrastructure projects that Big Muddy Workshop has designed for the City of Omaha play an important role.

Hands-On Sessions | Mule Barn How to Patch and Repair Damaged Exterior Stucco PRESENTER: Dick Grace, Craftsman and Owner of Grace Plastering, Inc.The stucco exterior walls of all historic homes eventually require attention, with challenges involving cracks, accidental damage and weathering. Successful stucco repair requires considerable skill and experience, and a poorly executed repair will often stand out in a dramatic–and unfortunate–way.

Restoring Exteriors - Tips and Tricks PRESENTER: David Lawrence, Craftsman and Owner of Lawrence Paint Co.When beginning an historic preservation project, there is a temptation to dive in and fix the first issue you see. Still, you know you have to be strategic and prioritize needs with limited resources. How do you determine that first step? For instance, if restoring wood is on the list, what are the nine steps to restoring old wood? Participants in this session can learn from case studies illustrating exterior restoration methods.

It is a practice that needs ordinary homeowners to step up to the plate—to save not only their own homes but also their local landmarks. Together we can save our history and it’s not as tough as it may seem. You can do it, we can help.

Station to Station: The Journey of a Building: Its Rehabilitation and Rebirth | Room 201 APRESENTERS: Sheila J. Ireland, Architect and Senior Associate at LEO A DALY, and Melissa Dirr Gengler, Architectural Historian and President of Historic Resources Group, Inc. Join Sheila and Melissa as they describe how the design concept, challenges and application of Historic Tax Credits influenced outcomes for this adaptive reuse project. This presentation will include before-and-after photography of the building’s transformation from Burlington Station to the home of KETV 7 Omaha and its state-of-the-art television station facility and lessons learned along the way.

Maintaining Old Windows | Room 201 DPRESENTERS: Liz Veazey, Old-home Owner and Tim Christensen, CraftsmanLearn how to show your old windows the respect they deserve by old-home owner Liz Veazey and her teacher, craftsman Tim Christensen. Cleaning, glazing, painting, ropes, sashes and storm windows all are on the agenda. Bring your questions.

Omaha’s Boulevard Network – A Story of Change Room 201 EPRESENTERS: Stuart Shell, AIA, LEED BD+C, Forte Building Science, a division of M.E. GROUP, and Robyn Fordyce, Landscape Designer at VireoOmaha boasts one of the nation’s most connected and intact historic boulevard networks, dating from the 1890s. The presentation will highlight the ties between the boulevards’ design and cultural shaping forces within the city. Participants will have an opportunity to synthesize this rich history into concepts for maintaining both the integrity and relevance of the network for the next century.

I Bought a Tree and the House Came With It! | Room 201 FPRESENTER: Diana Failla, Arborist and Certified Master Gardener Historic homes come with old trees, landmark trees and sometimes even champion trees. Learn how to keep your old trees happy and healthy along with how to plant in the understory so new trees can become established as historic trees die. Attendees will also learn about the benefits of trees as they relate to home values and explore what species of trees to plant in suitable locations in home and urban landscapes.

Successful plaster repair requires a few key details to bring your walls back to their historic glory.

Environmentally Friendly Restoration Products for Patching MasonryPRESENTER: Gary Keshner, Mason Restorer and Midwest Representative of Cathedral Stone ProductsMasonry walls can provide great strength to our structures, but over time, they can be subject to staining from pollution, spawling and breakage from water infiltration and various other problems. Keshner will discuss using environmentally friendly restoration products on various masonry materials, including limestone, terra cotta and concrete.

Market On Main – A Main Street Revitalization Room 201 EPRESENTER: Nick Klimek, Community Planner at RDG Planning & DesignA conversation about creating a community catalyst – designing and implementing a project to build momentum in support of district renovation. Klimek shares his work creating a restaurant and small business incubator known as “Market on Main” in Southeast Iowa.

In this session, participants will hear about effective techniques for removing wallpaper from older walls, discover ways to repair those period-perfect plaster walls, see how to strip layers of paint from interior trim without using paint stripper and renovate hardware.
