    COMMENT

When Yarra Councillors voted to exhibit the Draft Swan Street Structure Plan,

they published a document, which most people thought, the building heights

    were the maximum.

For Council Ofcers to move the goal posts after the exhibition period has

ended, and propose increased building heights, is both cheeky and not very

    open and transparent.

There is no crowd involved with responding to the Draft Swan Street StructurePlan, simply numerous residents and ratepayers who are now aware that the

Yarra Council has been less than frank in their quest to appease developers,

and the State Government Department of Planning.

Yarra Councillors are now trotting out the excuses of why there must be

    higher-density development.

Yarra Council is deadly silent on the fact that the same State PlanningDepartment, and Planning Minister, Matthew Guy, MLC, has recently (28th July,

2011) agreed to allow outer suburbs Boronia activity centres and Knox

Council, the green light to redesign their Structure Plan, in consultation with

aected residents, and set their own height limits, well under what the Council

Ofcers wanted. The Planning Minister has taken the initiative to advise

Knox Council that the former Governments mandated height limit has been

    removed. [See article below].

The precedent has already been set at Boronia, but Yarra Council invents

myriad excuses why we cant have our own range of much lower height limits.

Yarra Council could start to show that it has the best interests of its ratepayers

aected at heart, by talking to Planning Minister, Matthew Guy, MLC, and also

consult with the State Government in setting our own height limits.

Ratepayers of Richmond, Cremorne and Burnley, just want the same as the

outer suburbs, the opportunity to prepare a vision for their area, and not have

planners $$$ and Council Ofcers thrust this disjointed Draft Swan Street

    Structure Plan, onto their areas.

BAILLIEU GOVT OVERTURNS LABOR'S RULING ON BORONIA ACTIVITIESAREA

    28th July 2011

Nick Wakeling MP, Member for Ferntree Gully, and Heidi Victoria MP, Member for Bayswater,

announced today that the Baillieu Government has stood up for Boronia residents regarding their

concerns about multi-storey development in Boronia.

The local members confirmed today that after meeting with the State Planning Minister, Hon

Matthew Guy, the Baillieu Government would override the former Brumby Labor Government's

direction that the Boronia Structure Plan should see a minimum height limit of nine metres in the

    Boronia activities centre.

Mr Guy recently wrote to Knox City Council informing the Council that the Council was now free to

determine a height limit for the Boronia activities area.

Heidi Victoria MP expressed her pleasure about today's announcement. "Today's announcement

demonstrates that the Baillieu Government is standing up for Boronia residents. Knox Council can

now freely develop a planning blueprint for Boronia's activities area in consultation with Boronia

residents. Knox Councillors, who have been democratically elected by our community, can now

develop a blueprint for the Boronia activities area, instead of being bullied by the previous Labor

    Government."

Nick Wakeling MP welcomed this week's announcement: "The structure plan process has been very

distressing to Boronia residents. I am very pleased that the Planning Minister has taken the initiative

to advise Knox Council that the former Government's mandated height limit has been removed."

"The Baillieu Government has listened to the Boronia community and given Knox Council the green

light to redesign the structure plan for the Boronia activities area in consultation with affected

    residents."
