Holy Week and Its Liturgies
Palm Sunday We are about to enter the most sacred time of the Church year. Holy Week begins with the liturgies of Palm (Passion) Sunday. Christians throughout the world remember Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem amid crowds, shouting “Hosanna,” waving palm branches and placing their cloaks on the ground where the donkey bearing him would walk.
By the end of this day’s liturgy we will also remember how quickly the crowds turned on Jesus, shouting, “Crucify him!” and send-ing him to the death of a criminal.
It is the tradition of the Church to distribute palm branches. You will likely notice that our parish uses a different kind of palm than is typical.
For a very long time, St. Vincent’s has chosen to purchase palm fronds through the Center for Integrated National Resources and Agricultural Management. This provides income to Guatemalan farmers at a Fair Trade level. These farmers practice sustainable forestry, protecting palm populations and the forest. More information is available at www.cinram.umn.edu. Fliers are also available the church entrances. Holy Thursday Our celebration of this liturgy begins with a “Bring and Share” (pot luck) feast, a wonderful opportunity to get to know other people in the parish.
The Mass of the Lord’s Supper, which follows the parish supper, calls our attention to the night before Jesus died and the meal he shared with his disciples. The significant element of John’s Gospel, which serves as the touchstone for this liturgy in Jesus mandate to his friends, is experientially broken open. “As I have done, so you also must do.” What Jesus is speaking of is an act of humble service represented by the washing of feet.
It is the custom of St. Vincent’s parish to voluntarily wash one another’s feet, as we are able. Several stations are set up throughout the church so the process does not take undue time. By participating in this ritual we acknowledge the presence of Christ in each other. Good Friday
On this day, the Stations of the Cross will be led by our youth at 3 p.m. in the Grotto, on the corner of Yates and Ontario Streets. However, the principal liturgy is the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion in the early evening.
In this rite we focus on Jesus’ death and the events leading up to it. In his suffering we recognize the suffering that pervades our world and we pray for those who are afflicted and those who have the power to effect change.
We also acknowledge our own contributions to this suffering through our sinful behaviors, whether personally or as part of oppres-sive systems.
We recognize Jesus’ great act of love in submitting to the evils of human weakness as we reverence the cross. Parishioners are invited to take a turn carrying the cross if they are physically able and all are welcome to honor the cross with a touch of the hand or a kiss.
Mass is not celebrated on this day but Communion is offered to those who participate in this liturgy. The Easter Vigil
“This is the night when Christ broke the prison-bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld” (from the Exsultet.)
A liturgy of liturgies, it begins with the blessing of the new fire, in front of the church on Madison Ave. followed by the blessing of the Paschal (Easter) Candle.
Several readings from the Hebrew Scriptures and the Letter to the Romans follow. In these we are reminded of God’s creation of the world, God’s great faithfulness to the Israelites, the gift of the Holy Spirit in changing hearts of stone into hearts of flesh and how we have been born to new life in Christ.
This year, after the blessing of the new water, we will celebrate a reception into full communion with the Catholic Church and sev-eral Confirmations. It is a night making all things new: fire, light, water, lives. Easter Sunday While not as intricate in its liturgies as the Vigil, the Masses of Easter Sunday is no less festive. In them, we renew our baptismal promises and are sprinkled with the new water, reminding us of the new life we share with the resurrected Jesus.
As we prepare to enter Holy Week, may we pray for one another that we will be filled with the graces of the Paschal Mystery: Christ’s passion, death and resurrection to new life and be renewed in the desire to fulfill our own unique call to discipleship.
