16th Annual Sonoma County Bluegrass & Folk Festival By Mark Hogan, Festival Director

By the time you read this, the SCB&FF is just days away! Our 16th Annual Sonoma County Bluegrass & Folk Festival will be on Saturday March 12th at the Sebastopol Community Cultural Center. We are proud to present the kind of eclectic show people have come to anticipate year after year. Tickets are available at the door the day of the event, but attendees enjoy an advance ticket discount by purchasing ahead at either Peoples’ Music in Sebastopol or Last Record Store in Santa Rosa. ($27 advance / $30 door with current Sonoma County Folk Society membership. General admission: $32 advance / $35 door.)

Gene Parsons, formerly of the Byrds, and longtime musical partner/Van Morrison bassist David Hayes will team up with cowboy singer songwriter Mike Beck as one of the headliners. Gene, the inventor of the B-Bend-er guitar, will also conduct a workshop on the instru-ment during the dinner break.

In a slightly similar vein, the always entertaining Sourdough Slim (aka Rick Crowder) will appear with multi-instrumentalist Robert Armstrong, drawing on his extensive repertoire of country, cowboy and west-ern swing. Slim is a frequent performer at the Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, NV.

For those with a preference for traditional bluegrass, Sonoma County based Blue & Lonesome is sure to please. The Roustabouts from Bakersfield are also pur-veyors of straight up bluegrass and country music deliv-ered in the bluegrass style, covering many classic tunes from Jimmy Martin to Larry Sparks to Merle Haggard.

Switching gears altogether, the T Sisters, a Bay Area family band, bring their own brand of Americana to the SCB&FF. The sisters are no strangers to Sebastopol, having played several local venues. Expect the kind of wonderful harmony that comes from siblings singing together.

We’ve been hoping to have Evie Ladin at the SCB&FF for some time and it has finally worked out. Evie and her band, with Keith Terry and Erik Pearson, are on the fore-front of “neo-old time” music. True professionals, you can count on a lively and entertaining performance.

We’ll sell fine food on site and plenty of opportunity to jam with friends, so bring your ax and leave your dogs at home. For further information, check out the websites at http://socofoso.com/ and https://www.cbaweb.org/Events//Sonoma or contact Mark Hogan: 707-829-8012 or 707-479-5529 or the DeLaps at 707-861-9446.

Why you should consider becoming a member of the Sonoma County Folk Society if you are not already. Membership does have its rewards, but what are they? Of course the idea of supporting folk music is a noble one. How could the tradition continue if people (you) didn’t listen, go to concerts, buy CDs and make their own music? It’s called carrying on the tradition and keeping things that are important to us alive. Why else tell the old family stories if not to keep those memories alive? Folk music is, after all, an oral tradition.

Then, of course, there is the purely selfish side, if you are a card-carrying member of SCFS, you get discounts at a number of local events such as our Bluegrass and Folk Festival in March. Members are also invited to a number of SCFS happenings such as Pick’n Potlucks and House Concerts. Of course you also receive your own copy of Folknotes, our bi-monthly newsletter. It’s easy to join, just fill out and mail in the form.
