The government indicatedthat should Hyatt decide todevelop this hotel, Aruba willachieve another very impor-tant milestone with such a 5-star property in the center ofthe city. This, they believewill elevate the level of theCaya Betico Croes to a shop-ping destination with luxuri-ous pleasure.

During a recent press confe -rence held at the entrance ofthe wharf in which the gov-ernment shared the positiveresults of tourism, PrimeMinister Eman announcedthe news of yet another posi-tive development in ourtourism industry. The PrimeMinister made reference tothe visit of a delegation of ex-ecutives of the internationalHyatt hotel chain. Their visithere was to become familiarwith and evaluate the poten-tial operation of a 5-star prop-erty in the main street.

Several months ago it wasannounced that a parcel ofland was purchased in theMain Street by a group of in-vestors with the intention ofbuilding a "Business Hotel."While on the one hand thefirst phase of the project ismoving ahead, such as themeasuring and testing of thegrounds, on the other handthey are occupied with find-ing a suitable operator for thehotel.

This week various repre-sentatives of the prestigiousHyatt Hotel chain arrivedhere to evaluate the possibil-ity of becoming the operatorof this main street hotel. Theyvisited the location, talked tothe investors, observed thedesigns, and will return to

away from the busy traffic ofthe city. At Barcadera there is asmall wharf where small boatscoming from Latin Americawith fruits and v egetablesmoor. This wharf will be ex-panded to allow for the arrivalof large container ships. Some62 million dollars have beenmade available for this project.

Weekly Aruba receivesships from Miami, Rotterdamand from other large wharfs. These ships bring about 170thousand containers to Arubaannually, which our populationof more than 105 thousand andone and a half million touristsneed.

However, the expectedgrowth will be for the mostpart from transshipment: largevessels unloading their cargoto be loaded unto smaller ves-sels that can moor at the smallwharf and from there be dis-tributed to the region.

In combination with theFree Zone, the new containerwharf will contribute greatlytowards the development ofthe Gateway Aruba concept.

Moving the container acti -vities to Barcadera will createmore space for our cruise lin-ers. Something that is verynecessary at this time, as cur-rently only three large shipsand our smaller cruise ship canmoor at the wharf.

Hence, the expansion of thewharf is no luxury in view ofthe rate of occupation over themonth of January alone. Thecurrent wharf facility datesback to the 50's. Back then thefirst cruise passengers arrivedhere on the Liberator Ship, aship containing both passen-gers and cargo combined.

After moving the containerwharf, a very large plot of landwill become vacant betweenthe center of Oranjestad andthe large hotels. This terrainwill be designated for a wharffor yachts and for the construc-tion of luxurious condomini-ums and for recreation areassuch as an amphitheater andterraces.

jestad. It is from there thatlarge ships unload their cargo, but giant cruise ships also enterour wharf there. They are lite -rally in each other’s waters.Aruba expects a significantgrowth from both the containerand cruise sectors in the up-coming years.

Not long ago there was apublic tender for the construc-tion of a container harbor atBarcadera. This is intended tobe a bit higher up than wherethe wharf is currently, yet far

Aruba does not want to pre-tend to be better than the Rot-terdam wharf, but theconstruction to take place of acontainer and cargo wharf withmore modern facilities, willfortify Aruba's position as agateway for container trans-portation in the region. LONDON (AFP) - The BBCcame under pressure on Fridayto ban the Wizard of Oz song"Ding-Dong! The Witch isDead" from its airwaves as itsurged towards the top of theBritish charts following thedeath of former prime ministerMargaret Thatcher.

Opponents of the "IronLady" launched an Internetcampaign to push the songfrom the much-loved film"The Wizard of Oz" to numberone after the country's first fe-male premier died on Mondayof a stroke at the age of 87.

The publicly-funded BBC,the world's largest broadcast-ing organisation, has not com-mented yet on whether it willplay the song on the radiowhen the weekly chart comesout on Sunday -- three days be-fore Thatcher's high-profile fu-neral.

John Whittingdale, a Con-servative lawmaker who chairsparliament's Culture, Mediaand Sport committee, said thesong should not be played.

The Official Charts Com-pany said the song was at num-ber three on Thursday, currently closing the gap onthe chart leader by 2,000copies a day but still 12,000behind.

Britain's right-wing DailyMail and Daily Telegraphnewspapers have led moves tohave the song banned.

The Mail called it an "insultto Maggie".

The Daily Telegraph re-ported that new BBC chiefTony Hall, whose predecessorresigned last year followingthe scandal over late pae-dophile television host JimmySavile, has refused to ban thesong and told staff furtherdown the chain it is an "edito-rial decision".

100,000 euros will now likelypay even more, with the re-structuring of the banking sec-tor estimated to ultimatelyyield up to 10.6 billion euros.

Tax hikes and the sale ofgold reserves -- expected tobring in 400 million euros --are also a part of the plan.

In Nicosia, the Cypriot gov-ernment spokesman saidsavers will not be hit by a "defacto new recapitalisation," or'haircut' on deposits.

The first aid payment toCyprus should be possible inMay, the ministers said.

The agreement to extendmaturities for Ireland and Por-tugal will be crucial for Lis-bon, the recipient of a78-billion-euro bailout in 2011but whose ConstitutionalCourt last week ruled that sev-eral measures in the 2013budget were unlawful.

That ruling will make it dif-ficult for the government to re-duce the public deficit to 5.5percent of gross domesticproduct (GDP), which itpledged to do to remain eligi-ble for funds under its EU-IMFbailout.

Prime Minister Pedro Pas-sos Coelho announced cutsscheduled for 2014 would bebrought forward to try to plugthe 1.3-billion-euro gap causedby the court ruling.

Both Ireland and Portugalhad been pushing for the ex-tension on the grounds thatthey had stuck closely to theterms of their bailout pro-grammes and had made mostprogress in being able to returnto the financial markets toraise funds conventionally.

More talks through Saturdaywere to centre on moves toclamp down on tax fraudacross the EU that have iso-lated Austria.

The EU's biggest states --Germany, France, Britain,Italy, Spain and Poland -- arecoordinating moves they hopewill culminate in a deal at aMay summit on automaticbank data sharing across bor-ders.

DUBLIN (AFP) - Eurozone fi-nance ministers formally ap-proved Friday the terms of aproblematic Cyprus debt res-cue that will cost Nicosia farmore than first thought.

After the Cyprus crisisraised fresh worries over thefuture of the single currency,EU finance ministers agreedthat bailed-out Ireland andPortugal be rewarded for mak-ing economic progress bybeing given more time to repaytheir debts.

The two nations won anextra seven years to repay theaid they received to save themfrom collapse, pending legalguarantees from the Por-tuguese government that it willmeet deficit targets in the fu-ture.

Dutch Finance MinisterJeroen Dijsselbloem, whoheads the Eurogroup of fi-nance ministers from the euronations, said they wanted toease the pressure on bothcountries. The move was ap-proved together with their 10non-euro counterparts.

Dijsselbloem also said min-isters had formally approved aMarch 25 rescue accord be-tween Cyprus and its interna-tional creditors -- theInternational Monetary Fund,European Commission andEuropean Central Bank.

It had appeared earlier Fri-day that Cyprus wanted addi-tional aid after leakeddocuments indicated a sharpincrease in the overall amountneeded to 23 billion euros ($30

bn) from the 17 billion eurosagreed last month.

But the European Union'sEconomic Affairs Commis-sioner Olli Rehn said the lowerfigure was net and the higher, gross financing needs -- with"additional financial buffers ...to allow for unexpected fiscaldevelopments and bankingsector needs."

Rehn said that regular EUstructural funds, used to boostthe economy and plannedseven years at a time, could bebrought forward and re-di-rected to help Cyprus.

He warned that accuratelyforecasting the depth of the re-cession underway in Cypruswas impossible, saying theeconomy could shrink up to 15percent this year alone.

Under last month's bailoutaccord, Cyprus was to comeup with 7.0 billion euros andits creditors, known as theTroika, 10 billion euros.

Selling gold reserves wasone option, said ECB headMario Draghi, who attendedthe talks.

The Cyprus bailout is prov-ing a milestone in the eurozonecrisis, with small bank deposi-tors, who had thought them-selves protected by an EUguarantee, at one point askedto cough up some of their sav-ings to help fund the rescue.

The move sparked an up-roar, forcing officials to beat aretreat and spare those withless than 100,000 euros in de-posits.

THE HAGUE (AFP) - TheDutch government said Fridayit will postpone some austeritymeasures in the hope of stim-ulating growth while respect-ing its European Unionobligations.

"This is a deal that will con-tribute to reestablishing trust inour economy," Liberal PrimeMinister Mark Rutte told jour-nalists after a cabinet meeting.

He said that the priority nev-ertheless remained "puttinggovernment accounts inorder."

The Netherlands is tradition-ally pro-fiscal discipline andausterity measures, like Ger-many, announcing on March 1that it would slash its 2014budget by a further 4.3 billioneuros ($5.6 billion) to respecta 3-percent of GDP EuropeanUnion deficit limit.

Centre-right premier Ruttesaid the situation will would bereevaluated in September todecide if the austerity meas-ures should in fact be imple-mented, in part or in whole.

He justified the decision bysaying that the economy hadshown a slight improvement, notably in terms of exports.

"When we finalise the 2014budget (in September), thegovernment will evaluatewhether the economicgrowth... will be sufficient notto apply these extra (austerity)measures," the governmentsaid in a statement.

Rutte's announcement fol-lows an agreement with socialpartners, including unions, concluded late on Thursdaynight.

That deal, which must stillbe approved by parliament, in-cludes postponing a plannedreduction in the amount and

duration of unemploymentbenefits until 2016.

According to official figuresused by the government for itsbudget and published beforeMarch 1, the deficit will be 3.3percent of GDP in 2013, and3.4 percent in 2014.

The deficit stood at 4.1 per-cent in 2012.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - TheUnited States gave Japan thegreen light Friday to enter talkson a Pacific trade agreement, ina key step forward for a pactthat would account for nearly 40percent of the global economy.

The two countries announcedconcessions for Japan to joinnegotiations on the 11-nation,US-driven Trans-Pacific Part-nership, despite opposition fromsome US manufacturers andlabor groups and Japan's pow-erful farmers.

Under the Trans-Pacific Part-nership guidelines, all 11 na-tions engaged in thenegotiations need to approvebefore Japan participates. Japanmust still win over Australia,Canada, New Zealand and Peru.

Japan's entrance into talks "isgood for the US, it's good forthe Trans-Pacific Partnership asa whole, and it's very good forthe multilateral trading system

itself," senior White House of-ficial Mike Froman told re-porters.

Acting US Trade Representa-tive Demetrios Marantis saidJapan had made promises toease the concerns of US au-tomakers, which fear beingcrushed at home by their Japan-ese competition under a freetrade deal.

Japan agreed that US tariffson Japanese cars would bephased out at the latest possibletime allowed by a future accord.

The car tariffs would also"substantially exceed" the lev-els in the free trade agreementbetween the United States andSouth Korea that went intoforce in March 2012 after ex-haustive talks, Marantis said.

NEW YORK (AFP) - Atranslation of Biblicalpsalms that was the firstbook ever printed in whatbecame the United Statesgoes on auction this Novem-ber, with an expected pricetag of $15-30 million,Sotheby's said Friday inNew York.

The book is one of thebest of the 11 survivingcopies of "The Bay PsalmBook," which Puritan set-tlers from England printedin Cambridge, Massachu-setts in 1640 -- before theUnited States even existed.

The settlers, who wereseeking religious freedom, wanted chiefly to issue theirown preferred translation fromthe Hebrew original of the OldTestament book, rather thanthe one they had broughtacross the Atlantic.

However, the volume tookon even greater significance,David Redden, the head ofSotheby's books, said.

"'The Bay Psalm Book' wasnot only the first book printedin America, and the first bookwritten in America. This littlebook of 1640 was precursor toLexington and Concord, and, ultimately, to American politi-cal independence. With it,New England declared its in-dependence from the Churchof England," he said.

Selby Kiffer, with Sotheby'sspecial projects department, called "The Bay Psalm Book""not simply one of the greaticons of book history, it is oneof the greatest artifacts ofAmerican history."

No copy from the editionhas appeared at auction since1947, when a different copyfetched $151,000 -- a record atthe time for any book, includ-ing the Gutenberg Bible orShakespeare's First Folio.

"'The Bay Psalm Book' is amythical rarity. Unseen on themarketplace for more than twogenerations, it has become toorare to collect," Redden said.

The book is being sold bythe Old South Church inBoston to benefit its work inthe historic city's area,Sotheby's said. The samechurch possesses another copyof the "Bay Psalm Book."
