TYPOLOGY : Commercial, Hospitality and Recreation ( Homestay - Holiday Cottages ).

THESIS PROJECT

LOCATION : Site is located in Dhanachuli, Uttarakhand. Uttarakhand is fa-mous for its beautiful valleys and atmosphere favoring to this Project. The loca-tion is surrounded by breathtaking view of the valley.

SCOPE OF PROJECT : The project requires designing, styling of the spaces.Areas to design, style are :> Reception> Cafe> Private cottages> Spa

Designing : Reception 837 SQ.FT.Cafe 1230 SQ.FT.Private cottage 960 SQ.FTSpa 2420 SQ.FT

Styling : Reception Private Cottages Spa

WHY THIS PROJECT : Homestays or holiday cottages, are about escaping the hoary hustle of everyday life and plunging headlong into your own ocean of calmness. I have chosen this project because it is different from the projects that I have worked on previously. It is a very challenging project because it is situated into hills, it will help me understand how to enhance interiors using natural structures. Previous projects required designing and styling in only one structure, this project requires designing solutions for many buildings. This project will give me opportunity to work on exterior landscaping while using the natural terrain. It will also give me knowledge about what materials and surface treatments are used in hilly areas. For styling combining their traditional crafts with contempo-rary design will create an impact for the visitors. This project allows me to explore a variety of areas like Cottages, Café, i.e. commercial as well as private spaces all together in one project. It gives an opportunity to explore the designing of areas with varying scale/ volume as well as functions.

CLIENT PROFILE :Name : Vasant KadamAge : 54 Yrs.Occupation : Retired Assistant Commissioner, Sales tax.

After serving for about 20 years in sales tax with a routine 9 to 5 job, the client wants to build his own holiday cottages (homestays) and enter into hospitality business. The client has always been fond of twinkly nights more than the city lights, the sound of birds chirping more than the insistent car honking. Thus, the client wishes to draw inspiration from nature and build a weekend getaway that is as soothing as the scenery around. It shall allow peo-ple to take a break from technology-bound life which is the beauty of this project. Initially the project will have Reception area, Cafe, Spa and 3 cottages which he will give on rent on websites like Airbnb. After some years of establishment the site is going to expand in more 8-10 cottages.

Requirements :>Simple Interiors With use of resources available around the location.>The project should draw an inspiration from the nature itself.>It should allow the visitors to enjoy the great view of the valley.>Spa.>Landscaping wherever it is possible.> Small cafe for the guests and also for outside customers.>Small kitchen unit and TV unit in the cottages.

CLIMATE STUDY : The climate of Uttarakhand is sharply divided into two divisions :> Predominant Hilly Terrain : The weather seen in the mountain range is largely influenced by monsoon and rainfall patterns in the area. Within the Himalayas, climate differs de-pending on altitude and position.> The Smaller Plain Region : Summers are exceedingly hot with temperatures crossing the 40°C mark and considerable humidity. Winters can be chilly with temperatures going be-low 5°C at times. The most suitable time to visit Uttarakhand is summer because in summer the weather there is very mild. In winter certain areas of the hills become inaccessible due to extremi-ties of climate causing prolonged snowfall. Winter is the best time to visit the plain region as the weather is pleasant.

Climatic conditions in Danda chulli village, New Tehri, Uttarakhand : New Tehri’s climate is classified as warm and pleasant. In winter, there is much less rainfall in New Tehri than in summer. New Tehri, the average annual temperature is 15.3 °C. The rainfall here averages 1934 mm. With an average of 21.5 °C, June is the warmest month. January has the lowest average temperature of the year. It is 7.3 °C. Danda chulli village is located at a hilly terrain in Uttarakhand, therefore the area is very windy.

ANALYSIS : The climate of Location influences the Structure, Materials used in interiors as well as the functionality of the space.>Structural Implications : The roofs of the buildings in these areas are of pyramid shape, which help providing better drainage for the building, water is not allowed to sit on the roof at all reducing the risk of leaks and mold growth.Large fixed windows are the must in hilly areas as they will provide lots n lots of sunlight which will help to create appropriate tempera-ture in the interiors of the buildings. As its a hilly area they face lot of wind problems so fixing the windows will be the best solution. >Materials : Materials like Wood, cotton, fiberglass, clay plastering etc have great insulation properties. Use of wood in flooring and furniture will provide the adequate heat to interiors with the help of other materials such as fiberglass, cotton, wool for styling. Clay plastering on walls and flooring will help in keeping the space well insulated. > Uttarakhand is also prone to cyclones and floods. Tree plantation will protect it from cyclonic winds. Landscaping is very essential in the project to protect it from climatic disasters.

ORIENTATION STUDY : Regions which fall under cold climate experience very cold winters as they are at very high altitude. The temperature in these regions ranges from 20’C-30’C in Summer to -3’C - -5’C in the winter season. At Such places Use of sun heat is very important and essential. At such regions buildings need to be properly insulated so that the internal heat is retained. Exposure to cold winds also needs to be minimized.

ANALYSIS : > The cottages marked red, yellow and blue are the buildings I am going to design in this project. Build-ings marked red are the private cottages which are on the western side which attract more wind, also more heat. There are many punctures on the west side of the cottages as shown in one the elevation. The bigger windows are on the west side of the cottage which will allow sun rays to enter the building and it will make it more insulated, thus Living area in cottages will be placed on southern side and utility areas on the north side. Living areas will have more circulation than utility areas so they will require more insulation.> High circulation areas will be zoned out on the ground floor as it has adequate sunlight as well as cold temperature which will create pleasant atmosphere for the visitors. First floor will attract more heat,ade-quate for the bedrooms to create comfy, cozy atmosphere.> Semi Private/ Public areas marked yellow and blue are on the North east side, They will have pleasant atmosphere through out the day adequate for their function. > Most of the buildings in the site are at the South and South east side, which gives better access to Solar Radiations, giving the buildings better insulation.> Bigger trees can be used in the west and north west side to block heavy flow of wind in the landscaping.> There is lot of open space around the buildings in the site, which can be treated with reflective surfaces or with a halt so that they reflect solar radiation onto the building.> Most of the punctures (windows and doors) are at the western, South west side of the building, allowing the right gain of the sun heat.> The buildings are constructed at different levels which allows every visitor to enjoy the beautiful view of the valley. > Private Cottages, which will have more traffic are on the south west side. These are the areas which need more insulation to make the space adequate for the visitors. It will make the atmosphere comfort-able for the visitors.> Because the buildings are at the windward side, Use of fixed glazing with movable shutters will provide better solution in coping with the heavy wind.> All the structures will have darker colour tones on the exterior walls to absorb more heat.> Furniture and Flooring will be of darker colour wood and the material properties of the wood will absorb more heat, which will provide good insulation to the space. The wall finishes and furnishings can be of lighter colour to make it look more spacious and balanced.

Uttarakhand is blessed with large forests and multiple water reserves. Apart from forests Glaciers, Rivers and lakes are other attractions in the region. Most of the rivers and Lakes begin life as a tiny stream running down a mountain slope. They are fed by melting glaciers. The water follows cracks and folds in the land as it flows downhill. Small streams meet and join together, growing larger and larger until the flow can be called a river. On its way down the water shapes the landscape by wearing away rock and carving out a network of valleys. Reaching lower ground, the river widens, forms lakes and then it meets the sea at the end.

The concept revolves around the Water bodies of Uttarakhand. Water can be seen in the form of Glaciers, Streams, Rivers and Lakes in Uttarakhand.

The concept is about the stages of “flow of water” water and their character-istics. The flow of water seen in the nature is the concept behind the flow of spaces in the Project. The reception area has the concept of glaciers. The cottages has concept of Streams. The cafe has the concept of River and The Spa has concept of Lakes.

Glaciers : Glacier is the Solid form of water. Gla-cier ice is the largest reservoir of fresh water. Glaciers are made up of fallen snow that, over many years, compresses into large, thickened ice masses. Glaciers form when snow remains in one location long enough to transform into ice. What makes glaciers unique is their ability to move. Due to sheer mass, glaciers flow like very slow rivers. Some glaciers are as small as football fields, while others grow to be dozens or even hundreds of kilometers long.

Streams : These are bodies of flowing water moving in one direction. Streams and rivers can be found everywhere—they get their starts at headwaters then travel all the way to their mouths, usually another water channel or the ocean. The char-acteristics of a stream change during the jour-ney from the source to the mouth.

River : Glaciers melt into small streams and join other streams which forms River. Rivers are fast moving form of water. They are directional, have visual texture. River forms its own way and molds the surroundings.

Lakes : Lakes are formed by rivers that fill natural basins. The water in lakes does not flow, it is still. Lake collect and hold thus provide buffer from sudden changes, provide visual peace.

RECEPTION : CONCEPT

GLACIERS : A glacier forms when snow accumulates over time, turns to ice, and be-gins to flow outwards and downwards under the pressure of its own weight. Glaciers are large masses of ice that can take many forms, from huge sheets to jagged blocks of slow-moving ice and rock. For billions of years, glaciers have carved the earth’s surface and fed rivers with water. Their presence is still felt even millions of years after melting away to create valleys, lakes and even mountains.

Facts / Characteristics, Features about Glacier :

> Glacial ice often appears blue when it has become very dense. Compression over the years makes the ice denser over time, it forces out the tiny air pockets between crystals. When the glacier ice becomes extremely dense it leaves a blue tint. When glacier ice is white, that usually means that there are many tiny air bub-

bles still in the ice.> Each year, new layers of snow bury the old layer, it compresses the

pervious layer of snow. > Glacier ice crystals grow as large as baseballs.> At some locations glacier flows rapidly, it creates friction which creates

giant cracks called crevasse, which may make travel across a glacier treacherous.

> In some locations glaciers create moraine, it is created when the glacier pushes or carries rocky debris as it moves.

> Glaciers give birth to streams, rivers and then the lakes and oceans.> Texture seen in glaciers is still and steady.

Concept Implementation :

> By Texture : Glaciers have still and steady tex-ture. The texture seen on glacier is very raw. The space will have raw and steady texture.

> By Colours : Colours seen in glaciers like Blues, Whites and other shades of brown that are of land

below the glaciers will be seen in the space.> By Materials : Lot of natural materials like stone, wood,

clay will be seen in the site itself. However all the materials in the Reception area will be unrefined and raw to again de-

pict the concept behind the area.> By space planning : Glaciers are very rigid and stiff. The space

will show the rigidity and stiffness in the planing and also in the forms.

Key Points About Glaciers :

> Rigid and Stiff> Still texture

> It has colours like blue, white and brown colour

> It is raw. As it the origin of water which is refined by the raw ice glaciers

PRIVATE COTTAGE : CONCEPT

STREAM : A stream is a body of water with surface water flowing within the bed and banks of a channel. The stream encom-passes surface and groundwater fluxes that respond to geological, geomorphological, hydrological and biotic controls.

Facts, Characteristics, Features about lakes :>Streams are slow moving water bodies. >Streams are formed through the melting of glacier ice.> Streams create their own way. >Many streams when come together they form river and then lakes,>Streams take colour of the nature around them.

Concept Implementation :> By Texture : Streams have soothing light texture. This texture will be created through wavy patterns on mud walls through out the cottage.> By Colours : Stream water is very clear it takes co-lour of the environment around thus this effect will be created by using earthy tones in the interior.> By Materials : Lot of natural materials like stone, wood, clay will be seen in the site itself. The materials used in the cottage will be little bit refined than the glacier textures. > By space planning : Streams are slow moving and are very wavy in nature. Planning of the entire space will have this wavy effect throughout.

Key Points About Streams :

> Slow moving.> Mellow.> Make their own way.> Wavy in nature.> Not very dramatic.

LAKES :A lake is an area filled with water, local-ized in a basin, that is surrounded by land, apart from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake. Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or streams, which are usually flowing. Most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and streams.

Facts, Characteristics, Features about lakes :>In lakes, the water is standing, not flowing. >lakes move slowly because they have been blocked (by beaver dams, humans, natural rock cavities, etc.)> The bottoms of lakes, ponds and inland wetlands are covered with mud that includes the decaying bodies of dead plants and other organisms. The older the body of water, the more mud there is at the bottom.>As Lake water is still, not moving it acts a reflector. It takes the colour of the sky. >They are peaceful and soothing. >

Concept Implementation :> By Texture : Lakes have smooth texture as the still water creates smooth texture. Textures used in the space will be smooth and refined.> By Colours : Lakes take the colour of the nature around. The color palette for the spa will be inspired by the nature.> By Materials : Lot of natural materials like stone, wood, clay will be seen in the site itself. The materials used in the spa area will be refined and polished.> By space planning : Lakes create spacious visual. The space planning in the spa area will create spa-cious look.

Uttarakhand has appropriate climate conditions for animals like sheep, angora rabbits and pashmina goats. This has given it an advantage to extract some of the finest quality of wool from these animals. In areas near the border and rural areas wool extracted from animals is used to create products like Pankhi, Kaaleen, Thulma (thick blanket), and chutka etc. Designs on these crafts have great influence of the neighboring Tibet. Johar - Munisiyari in Pithoragarh is famous for their Woolen carpets and Thulma. While Almora district produces best quality tweeds, woolen carpets and artistic woolen shawls. Nainital is famous for decorative candles, which are available in various beautiful shapes and sizes.

Uttarakhand is not only famous for architecture and cloths but also for its beautiful paintings. Garhwal, is famous for Mughal style of paintings. Prince Suleman Shikoh, who was a Mughal Price introduced Mughal style of painting in Uttarakhand. Famous painter Mola Ram was very famous for his paintings and poetry at that time. Apart from that, the folk Art known as aipana, is a speciality of Kumaon. Aipan are decorative patterns drawn on floors, doors and walls to grace an auspicious event. Practiced largely by women, Aipen of Uttarakhand uses themes and techniques that have come down for ages. The other schools or types of paintings practiced in this region are the

peeth, Peeth is a type of ‘mural’ made around the seating area of Gods and God-desses with a base of rice paste decorated with colorful natural dyes. The main difference between Aipan and Peeth is the fact that Peeth uses specific designs for each god or goddess whereas in Aipan any design can be used according to the mood of the artist. Uttarakhand also has art of creating Clay models of various Gods and Goddesses in three dimensional forms which are solely meant for worshiping purpose, this art is called as Dekaras.

These idols are prepared out of fine clay mixed with colour. To make them more attractive they are

often treated with different hues.

The traditional buildings of Uttarakhand are known generally for their stability, long life span and resistance to adverse weather conditions, as is quite clear in old shrines and village houses. Above all, the traditional houses could withstand earthquakes due to their extraordinary features. Well dressed and sometimes decorated stones were used for the construction of double storied houses (residential houses). The old houses of this region are full of rich wood carvings. Wood carving was the sign of prosperity in olden days.

Therefore, the prosperity is reflected on wooden doors, windows, enclosures, and pillars. The traditional types of houses were constructed until the last century. The architectural styles of Kumaun and Garhwal regions of Uttarakhand are similar due to the same geographical and economic con-ditions. Both the styles are stone-based with minimum use of wood. Stone slates were used as roofing material for the house. These houses have insulation properties and were earthquake proof. These houses were made in a linear pattern and this linear pattern is known as Bhakli in local language. For the plastering of walls mud paste is used. A notable characteristic of the houses of Uttarakhand is their rectangular layout. The houses are separated into two equal haves with a straight flight of stairs (khutkuni) in the center and are used as living rooms. The walls are plastered from both outer and inner sides with paste of dung and clay mixed in certain proportion. The mud mixed with dung is also used as flooring material for ground floor. For the first floor, wooden planks are first laid then the mud mixed with dung paste is evenly applied over it. Clay and dung were abundantly used because of their insulation properties - thereby the rooms keep warm in winters and cool during the summer season. They had designed and erected even multi-storied houses with nonrigid joints between wooden and stone members; such houses are found mostly in Garhwal region. Such houses, known as pherols, have stood the ravages of time and earth-quakes; this architecture is called Koti Banal Style.

> The Kuber Cluster : The third style of temples is known as Gajapristhakriti. The temples of Navdurga and of Chan-dika are the excellent examples of this style. The dome of these temples was made in the Dholakar shape. The Dholakar shape is given to these temples to enhance the loftiness of temples. The temples of this style are found in south India. It is said that the south Indian architects were invited by the Katyuris to Kumaun region during their reign.

The architecture of Uttarakhand is based on locally and easily available materials like stone and wood. Because of abundant forests in this region, the ancient temples were made of wood. The entrance door of the Katarmal temple is the evidence of wooden temple. The wooden temples of Uttarakhand have got ruined, so stone temples have been built in place of wooden temples. These temples are mostly made of stone and stone slates, well known for their durability and strength. There are classical stone temples of different types and sizes, which date back to different times. Kedarnath , Neelkantheshwar, Jageshwar, Mahamirtyunjay, Hanuman and the Devil temples are some famous ones in this region. Each temple is devoted to a prominent deity; so on this basis, these temples can further be divided into three groups and are made in different architectural styles :

> The Dandeshvar Cluster : Most of the temples are built in the Rekha–Sikhara or Nagara style (Indo-Aryan style). The Jageshwar and Mirtunjay temples are the best examples of this style.

> The Tarun Jageshwar Cluster : The second group consists of temples which are built in pidha or pyramidal style. Lakulisha, Nataraja and Baleshwar temples are excellent examples of this type.

> They have utilized the dead spaces of the cafe to display artifacts to create an interest for the customers.> They have used patterned flooring, giving it the European look at the same time it is making the space look busy too because overall it has lot of elements around the space. > The tile pattern is continued on the pillars and part of wall at the food counter, the food counter also has words written at the back of the counter, this is creating cluster, and it isn’t matching with each other. > The name of the cafe is written on white wall with tiles, it is not standing out that well, it should stand out as it is the name of the cafe. There are coffee mugs right above the name of the cafe which is taking all the attention from the name of the cafe.
