Design in Nature: Within and Without Inspired by Contemporary/Modern: Selections from the Permanent Collection and Art to Zoo: Exploring Animal Natures

Tuesday, November 4, 201410 – 11:30 am or 11:30 am – 1 pm

Where do artists look for inspiration? How does nature influence artists’ explo-ration of color, pattern, form, and design? What happens when artists seek to capture not only the external but the internal character of animals? What can this kind of close observation teach us about ourselves? Speculate, discover, create, and question the standard definitions of both who we are as human be-ings and our expectation of what we consider traditional fine art.

This event includes an interactive introduction in the Mary Craig Auditorium, informal docent-led tours, and art-making projects lead by the Museum’s Teaching Artists.

HIGH SCHOOL SPECIAL EVENTS FOR STUDENTS

Make Mine Italian: 500 Years of Italian Painting Inspired by Botticelli, Titian, and Beyond: Masterpieces of Italian Painting from the Glasgow Museums

Tuesday, March 3, 201510 – 11:30 am or 11:30 am – 1 pm

Find out why 500 years of the Western world’s greatest art came from Italy and how it ended up in a museum in Scotland. Sandro Botticelli, Titian, Salvator Rosa, and Giovanni Bellini: from early religious works of the 14th and 15th centuries to paintings from the Renaissance, to the Baroque and ending with Romanticism and the Modernity of the 19th century. This is a unique opportunity to study five centuries of art without having to take the grand tour. Discover the power, beauty, and elegance of these rich traditions. Hands-on activities explore pro-portion and perspective, unpack how colors are made and mixed, and decode the symbolism and visual language of the past.

This event includes an interactive introduction in the Mary Craig Auditorium, informal docent-led tours, and art-making projects lead by the Museum’s Teaching Artists.

Animal (Open) HouseFriday, September 26, 20144 – 6 pmSBMA Galleries & Mary Craig AuditoriumGrades K – 12FREE (pre-registration required)

At the next annual Educator Open House, take a closer look at animals and our own animal nature as viewed through the photographer’s lens in the exhibition Art to Zoo: Exploring Animal Natures. Also, consider the sea urchin in a new “light” through the imaginative, large scale sculpture by Cuban contemporary artist Jorge Pardo featured in Contemporary/Modern: Selections from the Permanent Collection. How do animals influence artists’ motifs and inspire design? This focus continues our exploration of the shared process of inquiry, observation, and discovery inherent in both art and science begun last year.

This special event, for teachers only, includes:

4 – 4:30 pm (Mary Craig Auditorium)

• Preview of upcoming exhibitions, 2014–15 teacher workshops, new online lesson plans, and an introduction to free touring and art-making opportunities for students by Patsy Hicks, SBMA Director of Education and Joni Chancer, SBMA Curriculum Consultant and Teaching Artist

An Artfully Smart Balance: Art, Higher Order Thinking, and the Writing CCSS

GRADES 6–12Friday, March 20, 20159 am – 3 pmSBMA’s Luria Activities CenterRegistration fee: $15 (pre-registration required)

Artists and writers have much in common: they observe care-fully, pay attention to details, think metaphorically, respond to a subject, get to the essence of an experience, use a variety of techniques to communicate their impressions, and consider the viewer/audience.

In this workshop, teachers respond in writing to inspirational art from the current exhibitions (including Botticelli, Titian, and Be-yond: Masterpieces of Italian Painting from Glasgow Museums) and the permanent collection of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. The focus is on the writing types emphasized in the CCSS, and the higher-order thinking skills students engage in when viewing and responding to art. Participants engage in Writing Thinking Routines, Gallery (Thinking) Games, and an integrated art and writing project.

Participants receive numerous resources to use with their students throughout the year (images from the col-lection, newly developed integrated writing and art lessons, and suggested Writing Thinking Routines).

Lilies and Light: The Pond in PrintmakingSaturday, October 11, 20149 am – 3 pmSBMA’s Ridley-Tree Education Center at McCormick House Registration fee: $85 SBMA Members/$90 Non-Members (pre-registration required; price includes all materials)

“Life wants not only the clear but also the muddy, not only the bright but also

the dark.” — Carl Jung The juxtaposition of light against dark and close-up clarity against a murky background can take a viewer deep into a work of art; think of gazing down at lily pads floating on a pond’s surface and noticing the abstract, watery shapes that surround them.

In this full-day Adult Studio Class, inspired by works in the Asian Collection of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, create two projects: a multi-colored, layered monoprint and a chine-collé piece using delicate, abstractly printed papers. Both works explore the effects of adding shadows and highlights to water, creating the sense of reflection and movement in ponds, lakes, or river scenes. Use the large, on-site printing press and more easily accessible printmaking materials and methods. Lilies and light — glorious inspiration for our Fall Studio Class.

Facilitators: Joni Chancer, SBMA Curriculum Consultant; Gina Rester-Zodrow, Teaching Artist

ADULT STUDIO CLASSES

How Nature Frames the Landscape: Trees & Leaves, Branches & TwigsSaturday, December 6, 20149 am – 3 pmSBMA’s Ridley-Tree Education Center at McCormick House Registration fee: $85 SBMA Members/$90 Non-Members (pre-registration required; price includes all materials) Explore nature’s art forms using acrylic paint and printing inks. We’ve all looked up through leafy trees to discover intricate light patterns formed by foliage. December is the month for the “sky windows” that are framed by the nearly bare branches of the season.

Capturing the interplay of natural botanical shapes against colorful backgrounds is the focus of this Adult Stu-dio Class. Works from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art provide illustrations of how various artists integrate the positive shapes (foliage) with the negative space around it to create depth, visual interest, and bold design. Use different techniques to design leafy patterns, branch borders, and sky windows, and explore color and texture, expressive line, repetition of shape, negative space, and the transition from realism to abstraction.

Facilitators: Joni Chancer, SBMA Curriculum Consultant; Gina Rester-Zodrow, Teaching Artist

Teaching Assistant ProgramTeaching Assistant (TA) positions are for 15–18 year olds interested in art and working with children during the Museum’s ArtVenture Camps at the Ridley-Tree Education Center at McCormick House (RTEC). TAs are responsible for assisting the Teaching Artist in the classroom, preparing materials, and helping children with hands-on art making.

ArtVenture Camps take place at RTEC during spring and summer breaks. The site offers camps for students ages 5–12 in an atmosphere where cre-ativity, studio art practices, and fun create an enriching experience. Each week, ArtVenture Camp offers a variety of activities including painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics structured around a specific theme.

Becoming a TA provides young artists with professional skills in art mak-ing and art education. This competitive program includes an orientation, Museum tours, mentoring by a Teaching Artist, and Studio Hours (during the summer). TAs walk away with a solid relationship to the Museum, teaching skills, new art techniques, and more.

For more information or an application, contact Kendall Pata at [email protected] after January 1, 2015.

Teen InternshipIn this seasonal internship program, teens ages 15–18 create hands-on art projects with working artists, learn tricks of the trade from art professionals, and gain inside information on how the Museum func-tions. Choose from fall, winter and/or spring sessions that each fea-ture a different Museum exhibition, professional artist, and project. In addition to their exposure to the professional art world, interns create interactive art projects for their peers, in order to foster an environment within the Museum that is inclusive and welcoming to other students their age.

For the Fall session, interns work with local artist Jennifer Vander-pool, with mentoring by Museum Teaching Artist Kendall Pata. This intensive at the end of October explores architecture, color, and geometric forms inspired by Contemporary/Modern: Selections from the Permanent Collection. The internship culminates with a group installation in the Museum’s store window during November’s 1st Thursday event. Interns also develop an inter-active art project for their peers based on the same exhibition, which they will debut and teach at the Museum’s High School event on November 4, 2014.

This program requires an application and an interview. Selected interns receive internship hours and community service credit. For more information, contact Kendall Pata at [email protected].
