I worked on the launch of this magazine, and I have been wooed by its pages since. San Franciscos clever brides and vendors have created some of the most innovative and iconic weddings a couple could ever hope for, and this magazine has always captured the cream. So when previous editor-in-chief Mary Jo Bowling left on maternity, I worried that the magazine might lose some of its shine. Fortunately, were writing about the Bay Area (read: the single greatest place to get married on the planet). A couple could wear sneakers and look gorgeous when standing at Lands End. Plus, our on-the-pulse readers are continuously creating new bridal trends, and the weddings I see are as diverse and unique as San Francisco itself. Our vast range of aesthetic is perhaps best reected in this issues three City Hall weddings. Te San Francisco landmark is fabulous in each, but youd never know it was the same venue. College sweethearts Jessica Leao and Cassidy Zerrer (page 54) decked the Rotunda to the nines with hot-pink lighting, dripping glass crystals, and a posh nightclub-like dance oorcomplete with lounges and chandeliers. On page 66, San Francisco socialites Suzanne Diamond and Dimitri Haniotiss black-and-white weddingwith international guests and performances from a local Opera starcould easily have been mistaken for a gala. And in understated San Francisco style, Kristen and Alex Payne shared vows at City Hall with only the photographer as witness, and then met friends and family for a cool reception at Orson (page 70).

Our Bay Area weddings couldnt be more dierentor more stunningand Im so thankful to have shared in them. Im also thankful that we have one of the most stellar teams a magazine can put together. Its easy to look good when you have a genius like art director Cherie Jhaveri at the helm. Our associate editor Autumn Millhouse wrote the book on wine country weddings (quite literally: her book Romantic Napa Valley is already on Amazon). And publisher Erin Egleston knows more about the wedding industry than any editor could learn in a lifetime. Just like San Franciscos, our tastes and aesthetic may change, but the Bay Area weddings we feature remain fresh, avant-garde, and always very, very stylish. Speaking

of changing stylishly, Im happy to report that we now have a tall drink of water to add to our little familyMary Jo Bowlings son, Mason (see above, and check out those dimples). I couldnt be happier about the addition. I love stories like these. And if you get as excited as I do about them, youll want to share yours with the world. Send me your story at [email protected].

  • Having spent weeks trying to get San Francisco magazines September issue out the door before leaving for her wedding, San Francisco style director Elizabeth Varnell found herself sprinting around Union Square looking for the perfect wedding lingerie ve days before her nuptials. Typical, she laughs. To save clipboard-wielding brides-to-be the mad dash, she put together a look at the latest lingerie trends from her favorite lines for this issue. Elizabeth Varnell is a San Francisco-based fashion journalist. Her work has appeared in San Francisco, InStyle, Surface, PaperCity, and Te Mens Book.

Every time I write about another couples wedding, I relive all the fun I had with my husband on my own wedding day, says contributing writer Nerissa Pacio Itchon about covering the fall nuptials of Hayley Badovinus and Lindon Seed at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone (page 64). Itchon is a San Francisco-based fashion journalist whose award-winning work has been published in publications such as the Los Angeles Times, Womens Wear Daily, 7x7, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the San Jose Mercury News. A recent bride who celebrated her winter reception at the Golden Gate Club in the Presidio, Itchon appreciates the time, energy, and love that goes into planning the perfect Bay Area wedding.

Being a hopeless romantic, working for Brides rearmed my hope in love, explains associate editor Autumn Millhouse. It was an honor to hear from brides and share the magical details of their wedding. Millhouse worked on everything from stories about local designers (Fashion House, page 30) to features about our fabulous real weddings. Millhouse is an award-winning travel writer specializing in romantic getaways. She is also the author of Romantic Napa Valley: an Insiders Guide for Couples, the lifestyle editor of Napa Valley Life Magazine, and a contributor for AntiBride.com and Destination I Do magazine.

Tiany Maleshefski has attended her fair share of weddings and was well prepared to write about our chic bachelorette parties (Girl Getaways, page 26). In fact, Maleshefshi had already visited the sites mentioned before the story was even assigned. She says she wishes being a wedding guest was a paid occupation. Teres no other event I love more to attend! In the interim, shes an editor at AllBusiness.com and writes a weekly cocktail column for the San Francisco Examiner. Her work has appeared in San Francisco magazine, Strings, Plenty, and Alarm. Oh, and she is in the process of planning her own fabulous nuptials set to take place on July 31st!

    Kid Chic

Celebrity event planner Kristi amoroso loves children at weddings, but even she admits that the tiniest guests can create big problems. People need to manage their expectations about children, she explains. You cant just show up with kids and hope that all will go well or they will run around and go crazy. Over the years, amoroso has perfected funand chicideas to integrate children into the party. Autumn Millhouse

First and foremost, Amoroso recommends hiring a sitter and providing both the planner and sitter with a list of childrens names and any culinary restrictions. I did a wedding, and two of the children were vegan. No one told me ahead of time, and they were miserable! Everyone was eating cookies and grilled cheesethey had nothing. Amoroso also always recommends a childrens menu featuring dishes reimagined from the main menu. Mac and cheese with artisanal cheese is a favorite. And its easy to use ingredients from pasta dishes on the dinner menu. A designated craft area, like a small tent or childrens table, is a sure-re way to entertain kids for hours and can be an adorable addition to the wedding. Include a craft that appeals to boys, girls, and children of all ages, suggests Amoroso. A cookie decoration station with sprinkles and colorful frosting provides a sweet treat and entertainment for everyone. And no need for an eyesorewith draping curtains, glass glitter, and playful decorations, this kid-friendly zone can be just as stylish as the rest of the wedding.

    Forbidden Flower

Floral designer Natalie Bowen was used to clients granting her artistic freedom, save one seemingly obvious demand: no carnations. Ever. But something changed. It started with brides admitting they secretly liked carnations, confesses Bowen. But now brides ask for them specically. Te result? A fashion-forward statement for the hippest of brides. And Bowen isnt the only one to take notice. Orna Maymon of Ornamento has been adorning wedding tables with the once-forbidden ower. Carnations were always stigmatized as cheap, she explains. But if designed properly, they are powerfully beautiful. In a recent installation, Maymon dangled dozens of white carnations in test tubes from the ceiling for a dramatic table. A carnation by any other name? Natalie Bowen Designs, nataliebowendesigns.com; Ornamento, ornamento.com R.W.

    Girl Getaways

If there was ever a time when brides celebrated an engagement with Jell-O shots, it certainly isnt now. Tats why more women are seeking out upscale getaway packages that include everything from luxe spa days to white-water rafting adventures. We checked out three options and found girl getaways worth getting married for. At Cordevalle, brides create packages with yoga, hikes in the nearby Santa Cruz mountains, or the quintessential spa day. Brides stay in one of the resorts spacious Fairway homes (think: giant slumber party with fancy nibbles, cocktails, and enough privacy to walk between suites in pajamas). Cordevalle can even organize movie nights with pizzas, smores, and trued popcorn. Cordevalle, 1 Cordevalle Club Dr., San Martin, 408-695-4500, cordevalle.com For brides looking for some pampering, Carneros Innan ubr-fabulous Napa Valley resortis a more traditional girly getaway. Te hotels packages are perfect for smaller groups and include lodging, spa services, and other fabulous perks. Ladies spend the day at the resorts spa, enjoy the stunning Hilltop Pool, and nish up with drinks on the outdoor pavilion at the resorts restaurant, FARM. Carneros Inn, 4048 Sonoma Hwy., Napa, 707-299-4900, thecarnerosinn.com Adventurous brides love the Girls on Granite climbing program at Yosemite. Two-night excursions include climbing instruction for all levels and accommodations at Curry Village or Tuolumne Meadows Lodge. Te program also oers a unique social experience: At the end of the day, participants spend time together, creating one giant bachelorette party lled with adventure-seeking women. sol seekers

Sun-lovers craving a balmy wedding have few options in San Francisco. Fortunately the magnolia-lined streets of Palo Alto are only 40 minutes away. Tucked between posh eateries and shops, the courtyard at the Garden Court Hotel

satiates the most crippling Vitamin D deciency. Design-savvy brides will feel right at home in the recently remodeled guestrooms by Spanish designer, Pablo Paniagua. Perhaps the only thing more jaw-dropping than the redesign is Garden Courts honeymoon deal: Host your wedding of 75 or more guests at the hotel and the company will put you up with an on-the-house honeymoon stay at one of their sister properties in Spain, Portugal, or Tunisia for seven nightsfor free. Bring some sunscreen. Garden Court Hotel, 520 Cowper St., Palo Alto, 650-322-9000, gardencourt.com. R.W.

Hold the Paper If an invitation sets the tone of the wedding, then a laser-cut hunk of acrylic says event. Such is just another order for Twig & Fig, the Berkeley-based studio that specializes in structural invitations. Te possibilities are literally endless, explains founder Suzie McKig. Such was evident when the company debuted last years collection featuring fabulous

invitations on materials like chalkboard. Tis years star is a slab of frosted acrylic, laser-cut with text. Te result is a chic invite with a club-like feel. Because Twig & Fig specializes in custom work, their most outrageous creations arent even in the portfolio. Our clients want a food experience, and that experience should be a reection of who they arenot just let on potatoes, says Mantle. Contemporary techniques open the door to creativity. He isnt blung. Creativity takes form in hors doeuvres like his cucumber caviar. Using agar agara gelatinous substance derived from seaweedMantle condenses cucumber juice into dark, tiny beads. Tey have the snap and texture of caviar, but its such a surprise to bite into them and taste cucumber. Chemistry also allows Mantle to gain control of the elements. Using a few drops of liquid nitrogen, he can serve perfectly chilled champagne in 100-degree heat or make boozy mojito sorbet with all the kick of the real thing. And sous-vide cookinga slow-cooking method using vacuum-sealed plastic bagsaords him a tremendous level of quality control, even with very large parties. You can cook 200 pieces of sh and have them all turn out perfectly, he explains. Its

literally the end of bad wedding food. But while his kitchen oftentimes looks more like a chemistry lab, Mantle still subscribes to one underlying philosophy: If it doesnt taste good, who cares how you made it? Its essential to think about the ingredients rst and the method second, he explains. One method will absolutely not work for every dish. Tough he is known for procuring caviar beads and below-zero sorbet, Mantle will also spit-roast a whole pig over wood chips. Its important to consider the venue and the wedding guests. Many of my clients are serious foodies, but that doesnt mean their friends and family are comfortable with avant-garde food. What to do with a meat-and-potato crowd? Te hors doeuvres hour is a good place to be adventurous, he says. Ten you can oer something more traditional at dinner. But traditional doesnt mean boringhanger steak with artichoke pesto and slow-poached prawns with fennel and Meyer lemon can stand on their own two feet. And his thoughts on traditional methods? Yes, we sometimes use liquid nitrogen. But the tool I use most is my mortar and pestle.

Jessica Raiter met Jake Mathews in the middle of the street at 2 a.m. outside of a gay club in Manhattan. We were each out with mutual friends, and Jake and I were left talking, explains Raiter. He was irting hard, but I wasnt interested, she laughs. I was out with my friends! Raiter was working in fashion in New York, while Mathews was a real estate investor across the country in San Francisco. Te couple only spoke for a moment, but something about Mathews always stuck in Raiters mind.

Raiter thought about him again when a career change moved her to San Francisco, but it wasnt until the same mutual friend came to visit that they reunited. Jake threw a-40s-themed party, and my friend talked me into going, As the costumed girls strolled up to Mathewss gorgeous San Francisco Victorian, Raiter joked to her friend, Next time you can stay in the guest room. Sure enough, by her next visit, she did. Five months and several trips around the world later, Raiter and Mathews were engaged.

Once we started dating, remembers Raiter, that was just it for us. Te wedding planning, however, was not so smooth. We kept getting so caught up in what we didnt want, but we couldnt settle on a plan. Raiter wanted a party in Mexico, while Mathews wanted something more traditional. In the meantime, they hired Alison Hotchkiss of Alison Events to help them throw an engagement party on New Years Eve at the chic and industrial Dogpatch Studios. We planned this incredible bohemian party, and Alison really helped us pinpoint what we did want, remembers Raiter. In fact, the party was so much a reection of what they wanted that they decided to turn it into a secret wedding. Te couple told only their immediate families and waited for the big day. When New Years Eve arrived, Raiter and Mathews welcomed guests into a bohemian wonderland. Refraction lighting bathed the space in deep red and purple lighting, and Alison Events oral installations of moss and fresh mushrooms added interest and personality. Posh lounges were made private with draping curtain tents; hanging antlers and candle chandeliers made things dramatic; and the favorsbottles of Jake and Jessicas Hangover Curewere adorned with the couples intriguing logo: a Russian doll symbolizing Raiters heritage and a bucking donkey symbolizing Jakes well-

known nickname, El Burro. At 10:30, Raiter snuck upstairs to change into a wedding gown, as Mathews took to the stage, grabbed a microphone, thanked everyone for coming, and made a surprise announcement: Tonight, well be getting married. Screams of delight erupted across the party, a chuppah was carried to the stage, and a gowned Raiter appeared. A guitarist played an acoustic version of the Beatles All You Need Is Love as Raiter walked down the aisle. Te grooms brothera television writer in Los Angelesled the hilarious and irreverent ceremony. After the ceremony, the party got even livelier. Sage Catering created a festival of food stations with goodies including Cowgirl Creamery cheese, walnut bread grilled goat cheese sandwiches, and a Mexican buet with Don Julio 1942 tequila tastings. Vintage candy girls passed out treats, Straus milk, and chocolate chip cookies; and a barista pulled hot shots to keep everyone buzzing. New Yorks DJ Blue spun reggae and dance beats until morning. And when the clock struck midnight, four cannons exploded with silver feathers and confetti while a thousand golden balloons dropped from the ceiling. Te party was such a blast that the cinematographeronly scheduled until midnightasked if she could stay for the remainder of the party. Raiter and Mathews happily obliged.

Erin Donnermeyer and Damian Hedley developed serious crushes on each other at the private equity rm where they worked. We irted across the stock room oor for more than a year, admits Donnermeyer. natural environment. We wanted a destination wedding in our own backyard, says Hedley. Te industrial barns, rolling vineyards and orchards, and farm-to-table sentiment of the hotel made the Carneros Inn a natural choice. Napa was also a perfect venue for a four-day celebration with friends and family. We had lots of friends coming from the Midwest and the East Coast and wanted them to really experience our favorite place, explains Hedley. Activities like a ladies lunch and spa day and a fathers and groomsmen golf tournament assured plenty of wine country adventures. Hedley laughs as he remembers, We were so late from the golf tournament that we didnt have time to change before the rehearsal dinner. Tere we were making toasts in our plaid pants. On the day of the wedding, keeping things simple was a major priority. We both have clean, minimalist tastes so we didnt want anything gaudy or over the top, explains Hedley. Event designer Jenne Hohn accentuated their vision with natural, agricultural details, using boxed grasses to hold the escort cards and apples pulled from the orchard as decorations. Bright green and sapphire blue paired with the cleanest of whites to make up the weddings fresh palette. Donnermeyer wore a sleek white gown and Carrie Bradshaws iconic sapphire Manolo Blahnik heels for the outdoor ceremony, held in the apple orchard beneath a cloudless sky. Creating their own tradition, Donnermeyer and Hedley both drank from a glass of Cakebread Cellars chardonnaytheir own version of the traditional unity cup. When the ceremony ended, guests enjoyed hors doeuvres, a lively photo booth, and Pimms Cup cocktails in honor of Hedleys British South African heritage in the sunny courtyard. Te party moved into the ballroom for dinner and dancing. Te ballroom was incredible, remembers Hohn. Damian was adamant that he didnt want it to look like a banquet room, so we brought in plenty of owers, vines, and plants. Lighting projections on the ceiling and wall resembled leaves and branches, giving the eect of light ltering down through trees. Te Carneros Inn designed a menu to truly reect the local bounty in accordance with the weddings natural theme. Guests then danced the night away to San Francisco cover band Wonder Bread 5. Several months after the wedding, Hedley and Donnermeyer picked up where they left o with a honeymoon adventure to the Maldives, Dubai, and Hedleys birthplace, South Africa. Hedley smiles and says, Weve just been drinking wine, eating cheese, and planning our next adventure.

Virginia Vilotti, a Marin native, moved to New York City for a job, not love. But love is exactly what she found when she met David Sterling. Mutual friends introduced the coupleboth worked for private equity rmsat an after-work happy-hour, and sparks ew. Tey stayed and talked for seven hours straight. On the evening of their rst date, the restaurant threatened to give up their table, as they talked for two hours before ordering. Over the next ve years, the couple

traveled the world together, taking more than 60 trips to destinations like Morocco and Cambodia. Tey developed a ritual of collecting shells to take home as reminders of their travels. In 2008, while on a romantic private beach in Jamaica, they searched for the perfect shell to add to their collection. Sterling crouched in the sand and picked up a box made of two hinged shells. He placed it in Vilottis hand and said, I think its for you. Inside, Vilotti found a gorgeous

Tey knew immediately that Napa Valley was the perfect wedding location for themit was one of their favorite romantic getaways. Te exquisite vineyard landscapes and variety of activities available made it the ideal place to share their vows with friends and family, many of whom would be traveling from all over the world. Vilotti shared her ideas for the wedding with her wedding planner, Robert Fountain, whom Vilotti calls a true visionary. Vilotti drew inspiration from Billy Wilders 1954 lm, Sabrina, with Audrey Hepburn. I loved the feel of the backyard dinner parties in the lm, says Vilotti. I wanted to capture that same feeling, like you were using your grandmothers antique china. Te four-day event started at Louis M. Martini Winery with an Argentinean BBQ and a live Argentinean band in honor of the couples close friends who ew in from Argentina. Guests also attended a romantic rehearsal dinner at Auberge du Soleil on the scenic terrace, where the couple signed the ocial Jewish marriage contract, or ketubah. Tat was a special moment because our friends and family got to watch us sign it, which usually doesnt happen, explains Vilotti. Over the long weekend, many guests savored sunrise hot-air balloon rides, wine tasting tours, and croquet matches. At sunset on the third day, the ceremony commenced at Beaulieu Gardens. Using mirrors, chandeliers, and chaises, Robert Fountain transformed the ceremony space into a romantic outdoor setting. It looked like an elegant living room space in the middle of these gorgeous gardens. Tradition was also an important element of the wedding. My family is huge on tradition, explains Vilotti. I converted to Judaism for David, and we wanted to combine our family traditions with religious customs to honor both of our families. Te wedding included traditional Jewish elements, and Vilotti carried her great grandmothers sixpence in her shoea tradition her grandmother and mother had honored before her. But Vilotti remembers the post-ceremony moment alone with Sterling as the most magical part of the wedding. In Jewish tradition, the couple is whisked away to a private tent. We honored that tradition with a separate tent away from the guests where we had a bottle of champagne, appetizers, and our favorite reggae music playing in the background. It was one of the most poignant and overwhelming moments. After a Paula LeDuc-catered dinner,

Leao didnt want to overwhelm her future husband with her passion for pink, so she and Maxine used the color in sophisticated elements including lighting, splashes of pink pillows in the lounge area, and pops of pink shades in the oral arrangements. To complement the luxurious big day ahead, the couple had a small, private ceremony the day before in Leaos parents English garden backyard. Ociated by the brides grandfather, the couple wrote their own personal vows, which included promising to remember to screw the lid back on the peanut butter jar. Te next day, the majestic 300-foot dome of the Rotunda in City Hall was the centerpiece of the wedding. Electric pink lights radiated around the dome, setting a contemporary and elegant vibe, while crystal embellishments dripped from soft pink rose and moss centerpieces. As the guests took their seats, they found pieces of hand-carved jade in honor of Leaos Chinese heritage.

During the traditional ceremony, Leao met her father at the top of the grand stairs before descending to a soloist singing Ava Maria. I practiced walking down those stairs a lot, laughs Leao. After the ceremony, dancing and fun became the main priorities. After a posh cocktail hour on the mezzanine, guests enjoyed a dinner of braised short ribs and brown butter and sage ravioli under the scenic dome, but the real party started with the reveal of the pink crystal ballroom. An extension of the lush pink decor, City Halls North Light Court was transformed into a vivacious, chic lounge. White modern couches were studded with pink pillows, over-the-top crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, and the dim pink lighting created an after-hours nightlife atmosphere. Te DJ mixed everything from Lady Gaga to the Rolling Stones to ensure that everyone got grooving. I love to dance and wanted to make sure everyone got on the dance oor, says Leao. In lieu of a cake, the couple opted for dessert bar featuring cheesecake lollipops and strawberry trees. Leao was adamant about omitting a traditional wedding cake. She smiles, I didnt want anything to keep guests from dancing.
