SOCCER SENSATIONS. The Lady Bobcat soccer squad has

been good at home this year, posting a 6-3 mark, including an

11-1 beatdown of Grambling State. Andrea Mauk (pictured) had

a goal and three assists in that game. By the time youre read-

ing this, Bobcat fan, the ladies will be in Nachitoches, Louisiana

for the Southland Conference tournament. Heres hoping for a

    win streak for the title!

    THREE IN A ROW!

After a rocky start to the 2011

    womens volleyball season, the

    Lady Bobcats reeled off three

    straight in the North Texas

    Tournament to get to 12-6.

    Amari Deardorff has been on

re, with 166 kills as of press

    time. Unfortunately by the

time we hit the shelves in San

Marcos, the team will be on a

road trip to end the season.

But make sure to keep an eye

on this team in the Southland

    MUSICIANHOT

In a world where beats aremixed, playlists shake aclub and songs are slammed

    through enormous speakers, its

    fairly impressive to stand above

the rest. David Manceor standsdistinctly aside from most DJs

    due to his deep understanding

of the music and his passion to

display a masterful show. Gettinghis start at teen nightclubs back

in Houston, Texas. David told us

what it was like to start his rst

musical expedition, It was oncea month, $8 cover and we would

come and DJ. It had a non-

    alcoholic blacklight bar and it

was at lot of fun at the time, wemade great money. His success

    seemed to stem from there.

    After that, we started playing

graduation parties and evenbigger events like the Military

Ball for a local high school, which was at the Marriott. Ivebeen spinning for around ve

    years now. Now that those

    days are stacked beneath him,

DJ Splic3r has claimed theSan Marcos/Austin area as his

    new battleground.

    A Step Above the Rest

Rolling on the momentum of his

    previous successes, DJ Splic3r

was able to tell us what makes

him stand out above the others. My niche at the moment is

dubstep. I try and bring a lot

of energy to help get the crowd

going. You also have to knowhow to treat a crowd at the start

of a show. You dont just throw

a banger out rst song. Youve

got to bring the crowd up fromground zero and build up the

excitement and theenergy. With a deepunderstanding of DJing

    logistics, David knew

what he had to do to

impress and glamourhis patrons. As far as

    my music goes, I like

to bring up a lot of fun

little samples and noisesfrom things of the past.

    ings people instantly

    recognize like Mario

sounds or the mainmelody from Fur Elise.

    Its great to see

    everyones reaction.

    Future Endeavors

Now set with a solid sound and

knowledge of how to make the

crowd move, DJ Splic3r is anevent that must be experienced.

David lled us in on his future

goals for this upcoming yearMy friend Paparatti and I just

    started a residency on Saturdays

    at Firehouse Lounge called $hit

$how. By years end, Ill have analbum and an EP. Ive still got

a lot to work on, but spend the

    time and you get better.

Charming. Trustworthy.Ripped. All great char-acteristics for the perfectpolitician, right? Well,

those arent the only words to de-scribe William Igbokwe. is twen-ty-two year old senior in college is avery goal-oriented and driven person. With aspirations of becoming Mayorof his hometown and attending lawschool after, William has potentialthat will be executed for the future. And hes starting now.

    Why did you make the

    decision to run for Mayor?

I think what makes me the best op-tion for Mayor of Jacksonville is mycommitment to honoring the con-cerns of the citizens, my commit-ment to my goals as mayor and theenergy and compassion that I have tofulll all of the aforementioned. AsMayor of Jacksonville, I know I could

really shake things up in a positiveway and cater to the needs of all citi-zens, regardless of however theyvebeen categorized by arbitrary labels.

    Have you always known

    what you wanted to do

    after you finished college?

Not immediately. It wasnt until thissummer that I decided that Id bid forMayor of Jacksonville in 2013. Mylogic is if Im an aspiring politician, why should I wait to start around themedian age of what, fty? e youthshouldnt be disenfranchised from

the political process in any aspect norshould it be an automatic disquali-er for public o ce, especial ly sincewere next in line to inherit whateverthe previous generation left for us. Idlike a say in the aairs of my com-munity as soon as possible.

    Do you think post-grad stu-

dents have what it takes to get

    their experience in politics?

I mean, of course. In fact, I thinkpeople should be engaging their lo-cal, state and national governmentearlier than that. I think its really

easy for people to become disillu-sioned with their government whenthey havent established any type ofrelationship with government in therst place. at opens the door upto instances where the rst time acitizen and their government have anencounter, its for an unpleasant rea-son. Early involvement and engage-ment of your government can helpassuage disillusionment.

What do you hope to bring

    to the table while getting

involved with politics?Id hope to bring the appeal of theyouth participation to politics. A lotof people my age or younger feeldisenfranchised from their own gov-ernments (local, state and national). In a country where the youth have so

much energy and potential to oer, there is no reason that a disconnectshould exist. Id like to bridge thatgap between government and youngpeople because obviously, bothsides have much to gain from astrong relationship.

    Why do you think that

    gap has been present?

Because our politicians neglect ouryouth and dont take their opinions(and sometimes their concerns seri-ously). So to close this gap, its on theheads of politicians to reach out to

the voiceless and to our youth.

    What are your hobbies?

I like reading current events, holdingconversations about current events, debating current events, running, exercising, playing pick up games of whatever, shopping, writing, speak-ing in publicI mentioned I wasboring earlier in this interview, right?

    Why are you so boring?

    Give me details.

Im boring because I live a very rou-

tine, party free (for the most part)and drama free life. Im just underthe impression that my lifestyle canbe very unappealing to a lot of peoplein my age group. Im an introvert, forthe most part. And I know some-times we get a bad rap for being dull.

Any love interest?Haha, yeah, there is one actuallyand shes great. Youll nd out moreabout her if/when we get married.

In your last year in college,

    what would you like to

do involving politics?I would like to volunteer with a cam-paign organization or a nonprotorganization. I really want to getmy hands dirty in the local politicalscene and help out in any way that Ican. Im not looking to make a hugeimpact on anything in part icular. Fornow, I just want to learn.

    1. I have the alphabetnumerically memorized.

    2. I have a sweet tooth.

    3. Im an avid pro-wrestling fan.

    4. My favorite color is lavender.

    5. Im a recovering metrosexual(but only sort of.)

    6. I compete for theUniversity Speech Team.

    7. I love Mangos.

    8. I have a shoe fetish thats quicklyevolving into a coat fetish.

    9. My favorite meat is goat.

    10. I am the Peoples Champion.

    If your friends would describe

you in 5 words, what would they say?

    Determined, Disciplined,

    Confident, Hungry, Empathetic

How is your dad doing now?

Hes doing well, thank you. I just sawhim and the rest of my family members recently for my 22nd birthday.

Has your father played a huge

part in your life? Is he a man

    you would want to become?

Hes played a huge role but not in thways many would guess. Hes a ver

quiet and thoughtful man. So on thsurface, he and I are very dierentWhere Im very outspoken and loudhes the opposite. Hes also a vershy and patient man. NonethelesIve learned a lot through my fathethrough his actions. I dont know more responsible or standup guy anId be hard pressed to nd one morintelligent. I know his struggles athe rst of ten children growing upin Imo State, Nigeria and the struggles he continued to face when hemigrated to the US to make a bet

ter life for himself and his family. have the utmost respect for him aneverything hes been through. Hetaught me diligence, patience and calculated approach to lifes problemthrough his actions alone. I couldnhave asked for a better father.

    What major issues would you

    focus on for college students?

Well since healthcare and educationoften disproportionately aect col-lege students/youth, those two issuewould be high priority in my rela-tionship as a politician with college

students. Weve discussed my beefwith healthcare a bit, but I recentlyread an article (I think it was in theWall Street Journal) that proclaimedthat more than at any point in thisnations history college students aredepending on student loans to at-tend school. I think that says a lot osecondary education in this countryand some of the problems its facingI dont think it should cost an armand a leg to further educate the na-tions brightest. Lest we forget, ourcollege graduates will be in charge

of running this country in the nearfuture. Itd be great if they couldcomplete and pay for school.

    What is one thing youd

    change about America?

e wealth disparity in this countis disgusting and exacerbates a lot oother issues the country is currentlfacing. So, without a doubt, that woulbe the one thing I change about thi

You want to be Americas most

    fit congressman out there, so

how would you win those votes?

Well, obviously I would need to stay in

shape. More importantly, Id need to paysome dues. I think soaring rhetoric frompoliticians can be a great thing becausepeople need to feel inspired, especially when youre dealing with somethinglike American politics, which can turnnegative so quickly. But soaring rhetoriccan turn into your worst enemy if youneglect to deliver. To win votes, Id tryto energize and inspire a sizeable votingbase but more importantly, Id followthat up by delivering. And deliveringdoesnt just mean drafting and passinglegislation. I dont think civil servants arelimited to the chambers of congress. Its

okay for elected politicians to get theirhands dirty with community service,town-hall meetings, etc. I dont believein one dimensional political service.

    Have you always been

    interested in being fit by

    running and working out?

Lets put vanity aside. In the spring of2002, my father has a minor stroke. Ithink that was the rst time I became very health conscious. While he re-covered, I started researching ways toget him into healthy physical form. Iintroduced to him some exercises and

dietary choices that I hoped would pre- vent him from succumbing to the ef-fects of hypertension again. In doing so,I adopted the exercise routine to givehim a support system. Later, my mo-tivation developed into keeping myselfhealthy in general. Its stuck ever since.

    Ive heard you have some

    killer abs. What is your

    secret to staying fit?

I work out twice a day for a combinedthree hours. In the morning, I work onmy abdominal muscles and wrap it upwith cardio (1.5 miles and 1000 jump

rope.) In the evening, I work on my up-per body. I make an earnest eort to eatwell but Im in college, I cant cook andI have to desire to learn. So I watch mycaloric intake and make sure it doesntexceed more than half of what I burnedthroughout the day. I guess Id attributeto discipline and consistency to keepingme in shape.

country. In fact, its a wonder that lit-

tle media attention has been given towhat is, quite frankly, a national crisis. An embarrassing one, actually.

Imagine yourself at the age of

    50. What are you doing?Ill be serving the United Statesgovernment and my constituentsin some form or fashion. Ill be watching my children grown intoresponsible, caring, young adultsand rejoicing with my wife becausewe have the house to ourselves. Illbe maintaining a close relationshipwith siblings and a few close friends

and Ill be rereading this interviewthinking aloud wow, I was this guythirty years ago?

What do you wish you would

    have accomplished by then?

To be a great father, a great politi-cian, a person who put a dent in wealth disparity, who challengedthe status quo on equality and dis-

crimination and a man who is still

relatively t at least in the eyes ofmy wife.

    You mention wife and kids

    often. Are you a family

    oriented type of guy?

Very. My immediate family membersare the most important people in mylife and that will never change. I wantto create the same time of strongbond and connection for my childrenand what will be their family.

What is the best advice your

mom or dad has given you?

If you want it, you can have it. Justwork for it. And pray. -Mom

    What are your goals

and aspirations?I have three major goals in life.e rst concerns my family, pres-ent and future. I want my parentsand siblings to be proud of what

I will ultimately become as time

progresses. I also want the abilityto take care of my parents and sib-lings in any way necessary, includ-ing nancially. I want my future wife and children to be proud ofthe man they know, despite my per-sonal aws. Particularly concerningmy children, I want them to knowthat their father loves them uncon-ditionally and that no matter what, they can come to me with what-ever concerns they have. I want mychildren to grow into people farmore progressive, accepting andloving of the world and the people

in it than I could ever be.My sec-ond goal concerns my career. I wantto be an eective and trustworthycivil servant/politician that my con-stituents and country can dependupon. I want whatever group ofpeople Im privileged to representto have the utmost condence andfaith in my commitment, skills andability to execute.

    Effective and trustworthy

politician is there evensuch a thing?

eyre out there, for sure. Its justunfortunate that in todays politi-cal climate, youre only getting tohear about the selsh and ineectivepoliticians. Id like for the term poli-tician to connote positivity again, ifit ever did.

    And the third goal?

e third goal concerns my own vanity: I want to make the coverof Time, GQ and Esquire. StudyBreaks has been checked o the list.

    anks for that.

    Why should they choose

you to be on the cover?

Well, they have no reason to select me,as of now. But down the road Id hopethat because Ive impacted a substan-tial amount of people in a positive waytheyd be compelled to tell the worldthat story by placing me on the cover.

    Where Do YouSee Yourself

    In Five Years?

God willing, Im stillseeing the positive

    effects of having served

    a term as Mayor of

    Jacksonville followed by

    having just finished law

    school. Ill be calculating

    where best to apply the

    newly acquired skills Ive

    gotten from law school.

    Since

    healthcare and

    education often

    disproportionately

    affect college students,

those two issues wouldbe high priority as a

    politician.

    GOING FOR

THE GREENSMama Always Told You To Eat Your VegetablesAlthough the most common conception of people who abstain from eating animalflesh or byproducts is that they are card-carrying PETA members, there are manyreasons someone may choose to be a vegetarian or vegan. From religious reasonsto simple healthy solutions, 3.2 percent of U.S. adults follow a vegetarian-based dietand 10 percent follow a vegetarian-inclined diet, according to the Vegetarian Times.

    Vegetarian Tofu Chili Recipe

    DIRECTIONS:

In a large pot, saut the tofu in the vegetable oil overmedium high heat for about three minutes. Add theonions, green pepper, garlic, mushroms, chili powder, salt and pepper to taste, cayenne and cumin.

Cook until veggies are just barely tender, aboutfive minutes.

    VEGETARIAN

    When someone says vegetarian, they

most commonly mean a lacto-ovo vege-

tarian, or people who do not eat

animal meat, but still include eggs,

milk, cheese and other animal by

products in their diet. Similarly, lacto-vegetarians describes vegetarians who cuteggs out but still eat dairy products andovo-vegetarians cut out the dairy but canstill enjoy scrambled eggs for breakfast.

Maintaining a lacto-ovo vegetarian life-style is usually the goal of someone whochooses to cut meat out of the diet. Theimitation-meat products lining grocery

store shelves and larger vegetarian-friendly options in restaurants, make thetransition much easier.

    PESCATARIAN

    A pescatarian abstains from eating

land animals and birds, but still in-

cludes fish and shellfish. They may ormay not eat dairy products. Becominga pescatarian is often used as an in-be-tween to developing a vegetarian or fullvegan lifestyle, but the diet is becomingmore and more frequent as a permanentstage. Pescatarians are given more op-tions for proteins and good fats, andoften better, healthier choices at restau-rants. Fish raised on inhumane farms arealso far less frequent, and fresh fish ismuch more readily available than organ-ic red meat or poultry.

    VEGAN

Often, being able to live as a vegan or ravegan is the ultimate goal of vegetaria

or pescatarians. A vegan cuts out an

    kind of animal product, includin

all dairy, eggs or anything that i

cludes animal-derived ingredients.raw vegan takes this one step further aonly eats unprocessed vegan foods, anabsolutely no steamed vegetables. Ravegans believe that this saps the food its intended nutritional value. This is easthe hardest lifestyle to maintain, as marestaurants do not take vegan, and espcially raw vegan, options into account.also requires careful scrutiny of ingredielists and a true dedication.
