RiverSan Marcos’ spring-fed gem

just one of many area attractionsIt is in every sense of the word the soul of San

Marcos. Dubbed “River of the Innocents” whenSpanish explorers came across it, some even creditthe crystal-clear stream that originates within thecity as being able to cleanse the soul of wrongdoing.

OK, maybe that’s a little much, but immersion inthe constant 72-degree water that gushes pure fromthe Edwards Aquifer can certainly take the heat outof the most scorching summer day.

incredible items mostly hand-made and many that are simplyone-of-a-kind.

With price ranges of as little as $4, the store carries walletsfor men, all kinds of jewelry, hand-carved back scratchers, quilts of all sizes and even carved soap stone.

“One of our biggest sellers are the hand-made greetingcards, many with beautiful and colorful stitching on them,”said Wiley, who spends several months per year in Rwanda.

And therein begins the story of how The VineyardMarketplace came into existence.

“Back in ’02 I heard about the need for medical supplies inMozambique and two years later went with my church on amission trip there,” Wiley said.

Soon she felt the calling to do more and thus began TrueVineyard Ministries, Inc. which today is interdenominationalworking with many churches.

“Rwanda was the site of massive genocide in the early 90sand it left over 600,000 widows. Many of them were infectedwith HIV,” Wiley said. “While the government there givesthem free medicine, it is critical that they have healthy foodin order to take it. What we did was to go the village leadersand get ten widows that they nominated as being the poorestand homeless with children.”

“After raising money to build each of them a house, weturned our attention to helping them become self-sustainingby teaching skills like making bread to sell to local villagers, spinning wool and making rugs which could be dyed usingnative plants. We wanted to teach them marketable skillsthat no one else was doing in Rwanda,” Wiley said.

that it will have a “teaching kitchen.” The concept is oneof learning how to live beyond the death with an emptychair,” Lopez said.“Too often after a death, the hardest

part comes when the survivor faceseating alone, facing that empty chair. We teach them how to re-socializewith others and the process beginswith them cooking for just theirimmediate family. Then it is expand-ed to included non-relatives. In thisway the survivor learns to re-social-ize,” Lopez said.Other features of the new

Ava Pope grew up in San Marcos, paddling theriver and hiking the trails and finding all the bestcamping spots in Hays County.

She also spent time at Texas State; her calculusclass at San Marcos High School met on the uni-versity's campus, and it's difficult to ignore a stu-dent population of more than 32,000 in a town of50,000.

But when she graduated from high school, Texas

State wasn't her first choice. She picked the universitybecause it offered her the most scholarships.

“Once I started going here, and especially now, I realizeI have no regrets,” Pope, who graduated in May with adegree in physics and now is working on a doctorate, said. “Texas State was just amazing.”

Heather Galloway, a professor in the department ofphysics, recruited Pope for University Honors, a uniqueprogram that allows high-achieving students to take spe-cially-designed courses as part of their degree plans.

That led Pope to work with another physics professor,Donald Olson, whose research and honors classes exam-ine the relationships between art, literature and astrono-my and whose work hasearned worldwide men-tion.

After having her inclass, Olson recruitedPope to work with him,and she wound up travel-ing to New York as well asseveral destinations inEurope to examine therelationship betweencelestial events and artand poetry.

The bond she developedwith Olson — a bondbetween an eminent schol-ar and an undergraduate— would be uncommon inmost academic circles.

But bonds such asthose do happen at TexasState, which was foundedas a teacher-training insti-tution and still maintainsand nurtures small-school-style relationships — even as it has grown to be the fifth-largest university in the state with more than 32,000 stu-dents.

That size allows Texas State to offer 97 bachelor'sdegrees in fields as diverse as athletic training andaccounting, international studies and interior design, public relations and physics, as well as 89 master'sdegrees and nine doctorates.

The university is recognized nationally for many of itsprograms. It has the largest geography department in theUnited States, and the creative writing program attractssome of the country's best writers as guest lecturers.Texas State is becoming a center of aquatic biologyresearch, thanks to the presence of the spring-fed SanMarcos River.

It also offers students a range of options beyond theclassroom — more than 300 student organizations as wellas community outreach efforts like Bobcat Build, inwhich members of the Texas State community work onclean-up and small construction projects for the people ofSan Marcos.

The university even has work opportunities that caterto students' interests.

“The whole time I was at Texas State, I worked forOutdoor Recreation,” Pope says. “I love being outside, camping and backpacking and paddling.”

teaching the necessary skills needed to be successful butby also empowering them to achieve personal goals andambitions. The commitment to a lifetime of learning has apositive influence on this society by transforming studentsinto graduates and strengthening the labor force. SanMarcos creates educational opportunities for students of allages making the possibilities endless for the children in thecommunity.

Public SchoolsThe focus of San Marcos CISD is to provide a quality edu-

cation to students, empowering them to pursue productiveand fulfilling lives. Covering 210 square miles, SMCISDincludes six elementary schools, two middle schools and onehigh school serving approximately 7,500 students.

SMCISD evaluates the effectiveness of its curriculum part-ly by assessing students on their academic performances instate assessment testing. Results from the 2010 preliminaryTAKS scores show SMCISD continues to rise in performance, particularly in math and science where it met the newRecognized standard of 80 percent. Areas of strength for thedistrict have been primarily in reading, writing and socialstudies hitting the mark for Exemplary (90 percent meetingstandard in all groups).

SMCISD officials believe the increase in TAKS scores canbe partly attributed to the creation of six elementary cam-puses from four elementary campuses and one intermediatecampus.

Within the past five years, SMCISD has been recognizedfor several accomplishments and performance making it adesirable public school system. The school district achieveda Recognized rating in the Texas Education Agency schoolaccountability system in July of 2010.

Little Guys takes all the stress out of movingWhether you're moving an apartment, house or office,

the task is never fun and many times turns out to beharder than you originally thought.

That is, unless you contact Little Guys Movers, whichhas been taking the stress, emotion and hassles out ofmoving for clients here since 1997.

“I think one of the first things people notice about usthat's different is that our guys really like working witheach other and helping ease the burden of moving forcustomers,” Mike Lang, local manager, said.

“Many of our employees start with us when they arefreshman in college and stay even through getting a mas-ter's degree,” Lang said.

While the company started out handling mostly SanMarcos-area work, it has now expanded to reach fromAustin to San Antonio and even across state lines.

“Beyond our interstate certification which came inFebruary, we've also achieved certification from theAMSA, American Moving and Storage Association. That'simportant because the AMSA is like the Better BusinessBureau but geared specifically towards the moving andstorage industry.

“It tells consumers that we can be trusted and have agreat service record,” said Lang.

Normally the AMSA certification process takes just overa year but Little Guys Movers was able to pass all thehurdles several months earlier, due in part to its reputa-tion among past customers.

“When you move people's valuable possessions, theywant someone they can trust, and we've proven to be

that resource,” said Lang who also mentioned that busi-ness this past year was up over 18 percent from the prioryear.

During the height of summer moving season, Lang saysthe company has scheduled anywhere from 28-40 movesper week. In winter the average is closer to 15 per week.

From one piece moves like a baby grand piano to relo-cating entire business offices, Little Guys Movers hasseen it all and counts itself fortunate that many cus-tomers come back for their next move too.

It’s hard to go on too long about live music in SanMarcos without at least mentioning the name GeorgeStrait.

“The King of Country” — the one with 30 consecutive yearsof top 10 Billboard hits — got his start at Cheatham StreetWarehouse in San Marcos in the mid 70s. Terri Hendrix, StevieRay Vaughan, Randy Rogers and John Arthur Martinez playedthe Cheatham Street stage early in their careers, too.

Just down the road, Gruene Hall offers Texas music main-stays at least five nights a week.

But there’s more than country available in and around SanMarcos. The revamped Bar 141 — formally Lucy’s San Marcos— offers a swankier approach complete with bottle service, aswell as local hip hop music. More in the realm of Rock ‘n’ Roll,Triple Crown Live has offered live music — local regulars likeRobbie Doyen and local icons like Scott Biram — for 5,000days straight. That includes Christmas. Here’s a closer look atthe local music scene.

mind of the residents of, and visitorsto, Hays County. While the hospitalhas not always been known asCTMC, it has always been focused oncompassionate care.

The origin of today’s CTMC was the1923 opening of the Hays CountySoldiers, Sailors and MarinesMemorial Hospital on Belvin Street indowntown San Marcos.

In March of 1960, the facility relo-cated to IH-35 as Hays MemorialHospital to better serve the growingarea.

After 23 years and a $1 millioncapital campaign, the hospital againmoved, this time to its present loca-tion on Wonder World Drive. In 1987the organization changed its name afinal time to Central Texas MedicalCenter and became a part of theAdventist Health System.

To best meet the needs of its grow-ing service area, CTMC has expandedboth its services and facilitiesthroughout the years. Millions ofdollars have been invested in severalrenovations, additions, new servicelines and information technologyadvances since the hospital’s openingin 1983.

Since 1983, the hospital hasundergone numerous major con-struction projects including adding athree-story professional office build-ing, a new magnetic resonance imag-ing (MRI) unit and cardiac catheteri-

zation lab and a new, two-story mainentrance addition featuring a newintensive care unit, patient registra-

tion area, separate radiology entrance, chapel and giftshop.

In 2007 and 2008, the hospital underwent severalmore large-scale renovations including enhanced ER andICU waiting rooms, a new 6,000 square foot PhysicalTherapy & Rehabilitation Institute, renovation to themain lobby and waiting areas — including the addition ofMochas & Javas Internetcafé — an OutpatientSleep Improvement Center,an expanded and renovat-ed MRI, and a completefacelift and conversion toall private rooms on thethird floor medical/surgi-cal unit.

In late 2009, CTMCcompleted the largestphase of its $35 millionexpansion project, includ-ing a new Women’s Center. The center features all-pri-vate rooms, a high-riskdelivery suite and aNeonatal Intensive CareUnit or NICU. The facili-ty’s growth further pro-duced a specializedChildbirthEducator/LactationConsultant and expansionof childbirth education andparenting offerings.

The project also broughta major renovation and expansion to the hospital’s oper-ating suites, which added two additional OR’s outfittedwith the latest in integrated OR technology along withthe renovation and expansion of the hospital’s originalfour OR’s.

In January of 2010, the hospital opened its compre-hensive Institute for Advanced Wound Healing andHyperbaric Medicine as well as the Institute for HealthyLiving, which is dedicated to empowering people to makeinformed and better choices about their personal well-ness. In March, the new Healing Garden officiallyopened.

As the first decade of the 21st Century drew to a close,CTMC had become a 178-bed acute-care hospital provid-ing a wide range of complex healthcare services in SanMarcos and neighboring communities. The CTMC staff ofmore than 700 employees works with more than 200active and consulting physicians to provide quality serv-ices to patients and their families. In addition, more than100 community members and interns from area educa-tional institutions volunteer their services to the hospital.

As part of Adventist Health System, CTMC brings along tradition of Christian healthcare to San Marcos.Adventists opened their first health center in 1866 inBattle Creek, Michigan. Now with 37 hospitals locatedacross the United States, the Adventist Health System isthe largest not-for-profit Protestant hospital system inthe country.

CTMC’s passion for extending the healing ministry ofChrist can be traced to the first day the doors opened onWonder World Drive in 1983 when the parents of the firstbaby born in the hospital had no means to pay their bill.

In recognition of the milestone birth, the hospital waivedall charges for the struggling new family. Today, morethan a quarter of a century later, the giving spirit contin-ues wherever and whenever there is an opportunity toextend Christ’s ministry of compassion and service to ourfellow man.

From annual free health care mission trips to third-world countries overseas, to scholarships for local stu-dents in need, CTMC puts its mission into practice bygiving back to both the community and those around theworld.

Each year the hospital underwrites millions of dollarsof care for the underprivileged and donates time, funds, supplies and services to numerous worthy causes thatalign with the hospital’s mission.

Beyond caring for the healthcare needs of our commu-nity, many CTMC employees, physicians and volunteerssupport a variety of community causes, social serviceorganizations, churches and other non-profit organiza-tions through significant donations of their personal timeand money.

The benefits they provide to the community cannot bemeasured, but are quite substantial.

The story of Central Texas Medical Center’s pastreveals its commitment to growing with the community, and the story of its future will be no different. CTMC hasalways been and will always be staffed by highly quali-fied, compassionate health care providers. CTMC is morethan a hospital; it’s a health ministry featuring a team ofprofessionals passionate about extending the healingministry of Christ.

COMMUN I T YIt’s more than where we live.

It’s what lives in us.

With a name that fits its size and location, Little Shoppe ofHealth remains small by choice, neatly tucked away in aquaint shopping center just across from Kinkos/FedEx onNorth Edward Gary street.

“We've chosen to stay small because we want to concen-trate on that unique customer experience, where people comeinto a relaxed atmosphere and receive expertise from ourstaff,” owner Kathy Dunham said.

The store opened in 1999, but Dunham's experience goesback more than 30 years in the health store business.

“Growing up in Victoria, I landed a part-time job while inhigh school with a neighborhood health food store. BecauseI'd been sick much of the time as a child I found the infor-mation insightful into causes of the sickness and how tobetter take care of myself and others nutritionally,”Dunham said.

Dunham received her undergraduate degree at TexasState while managing another health food store here in SanMarcos, a position she held for the next 20 years.

“After I retired, customers kept calling me for guidanceand suggestions on health food supplements,” Dunhamsaid. “And after a year I decided it was time to get backinto the business full-time but by opening my own store. That's how Little Shoppe of Health was born in 1999.”

Business has remained steady for the store ever since. “We carry a full range of supplements, vitamins and min-

erals as well as other natural care products,” Dunham said.“And now we also offer more organic skin care and miner-

al makeup which has become a growing segment of themarket,” Dunham said.

Remaining small has also afforded Dunham the ability tonot only give free literature and consultations to potentialcustomers but also free samples to make sure an ingredientworks for them before spending lots of money.

Chasteen said that the college scholarships areawarded to children who have been matched to aBig for over one year and who either graduate highschool or complete their GED.

In addition, 15 educational institutions offer afinancial match to the Littles who attend theirschool.

Statistically, the BB/BS program is a success.According to the organization, of the youth men-tored in Hays County, 100 percent avoided earlyparenting; 95 percent improved their academic per-formance; 89 percent had better classroom partici-pation; 80 percent avoided delinquent behavior;and 79 percent improved their relationships withadults, family and peers.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters is careful in match-ing youth with adults.

“We screen and match volunteers with our youth, and then provide ongoing supervision, support andtraining to ensure the match is safe and satisfyingfor both the volunteer and the child,” Chasteensaid.

The cost of supporting a match runs about$1,250 per year which includes recruiting, enrollingand matching the volunteers and children plusongoing support for them. Various fundraisers likeBowl for Kids' Sake aswell as in-kind servicedonations help meetthe annual goals andcosts.

“We also work close-ly with the SanMarcos Chamber andSan Marcos CISD aswell as creating rela-tionships with areacorporate, civic andfaith-based organiza-tions,” Chasteen said.

Another aspect ofthe local BB/BSorganization is“Bobcat Bigs,” as stu-dent group at TexasState University.

On Nov. 30, 2002, Bon Ton Meat Market lit up thenight sky in Kyle as a raging fire consumed the long-timedowntown establishment.

Determined to rebuild, owner Craig Fuller found a newlocation bordering San Marcos and Kyle in Uhland onHighway 21.

“At first, after the fire, I'd thought about just opening asmall place with the idea of just processing deer meat afew months out of the year,” Fuller said.

“But the city of Uhland wanted more for the communi-ty and that's why we have expanded to becoming theBon Ton Meat Market and Country Store,” Fuller said.

Fuller's family bought the store from the prior ownersback in the 60s, and he came into the family businessfull time in 1985, later buying the store from his father.

“It is still very much like family here. We have a smallnumber of employees but some, like one of our meat cut-ters, have been here since almost the beginning,” Fullersaid.

His original goal of meat processing for local hunters isstill very much intact as wild game processing makes upan estimated 30 percent to 40 percent of their business, including the processing of over 1,000 white tail deereach year.

“We specialize in custom meat and wild game process-ing,” Fuller said. “And we carry many specialty itemslike chorizo as well as doing party trays for footballgames and other events.”

During the holiday season Fuller says the store sellslots of prime ribs and custom roasts that bring cus-tomers from hundreds of miles away just to order fromthem year after year.

“Prime ribs are definitely a specialty of ours,” Fullersaid.

Another major item is the marketing of “freezer spe-cials” each month.

“It's a size that fits in small freezers but allows thecustomer to purchase with considerable savings enoughmeat to last about a month for a medium-size family,”Fuller said.

With the rising popularity of the country store, Fullerhas also taken on selling lines from other local business-es in the area.

“Texas Pie Company in Kyle is very well known and wenow carry their pies here, which has become extremelypopular. And we just started carrying products fromNew World Bakery, also in Kyle. Dick Burdick is in the middle of a story about the ugliestcar he ever owned. So ugly, he says, its mother wouldn’teven claim the thing.

The clunker was a late 40s model blue/green Kaiser. He’dbought it, strictly out of necessity, after a few months inschool at the University of Missouri — his love life was great, his grades were sliding, and he figured there was one slick-looking 1948 black Buick Roadmaster convertible to blame.

Burdick stops what he’s saying and raises his arm, carefulnot to bump the fender of the car in front of him, and pointsto the opposite end of the showroom — to a black 1948Roadmaster.

“It was just like that one over there,” Burdick says. “Soanyway, I sold the Buick and bought a Kaiser. Man, it wasugly. But I figured I was paying to get an education, so I’dbetter get one.”

Sixty or so of the antique car collector’s vehicles are ondisplay at Burdick’s Dick’s Classic Garage in San Marcos.Burdick’s showroom offers not only an industry history les-son but a time-portal to the special moments that certaincars can bring back to life.

Every car has a story. Burdick’s personal story of car own-ership starts with a classic Model-T.

In 1979, Burdick, the Thermon Manufacturing Companyfounder, was visiting a heater cable distributor in Houston. He told the man that he needed a bigger inventory, but thedistributor shook his head and said he couldn’t: He had aModel-T in his warehouse that was taking up too muchroom. Burdick wanted a closer look.

“So we went into the warehouse, got that Model-T out of

the garage, put a little gas in it, cranked it up and dad gumthe thing fired up,” Burdick said. “I drove it around the blocktwo or three times.”

He returned with a deal: Five rolls of heater cable for theModel-T.

“So that’s how I got into the car collecting business,”Burdick said.

It was around 30 years prior when Burdick and his high

risks are reduced when pets are neutered and vaccinated.Fixed pets roam less and are less aggressive. Vaccinatedpets have fewer diseases.

PALS provides spay/neuter vouchers and Spay Daysthroughout the year to those who would not otherwise beable to sterilize their pets without help. The spay/neuterprogram will continue until the shelters are empty andevery pet has a forever home.

The PALS' Pet Pantry helps those who are barely gettingby, with the hope that these families will keep their petsinstead of surrendering them to already overburdenedshelters.

PALS offers age-appropriate lessons and presentationsto promote responsible pet ownership. The classes teachhow to care for and respect the animals in local homesand communities, bite prevention, safety with pets, petoverpopulation and the importance of spay/neuter.

Trap-Neuter-Return-Maintain (TNRM) spares the lives offree-roaming or homeless cats, whether they are feral, stray or abandoned. TNRM is the only method that effec-tively and humanely reduces the community cat popula-tion.

Each fall PALS hosts Pet Fest, its largest benefit to helpfund PALS. This event features live music, a 5K and funrun/dog jog, Weenie and Chihuahua races, vendors, foodbooths, silent auction, dog washes and of course, thefamous costume contests!

school buddy began collecting Model-T parts from localgarages and scrap yards. Eventually, they put the bits togeth-er and built an entire Model-T. They drove it back and forth toschool for a year.

That was how Burdick became a first-time car owner.Burdick was born in Cheyenne, Wyo. in 1929. Though he

arrived just in time for the Depression, he was fortunate. Hisdad had constant work for Union Pacific as a dispatcher, sothere was always plenty of food to go around. But heremained aware of the bleak surroundings.

“I got a good overview of what was happening, with soupkitchens and people that didn’t have enough to eat. OnSaturday, my dad would go buy a trunkload of groceries andtake them to people who had worked for the railroad and wereout of work and broke,” Burdick said. “My father was benevo-lent; He taught me a lot — what goes around comes around, and the more you give the more you get. And I still believe it isthat way.”

A 1955 OldsmobleIn 1951, Burdick graduated and heard about a job opening

in Houston with Dupont. His first project as a Dupont employee involved handling

liquid sulfur — a chemical compound that melts at 290degrees. Burdick knew a little bit about the stuff from piddlingwith his chemistry lab back home — but had no idea at thetime what it would mean for him.

He and a friend, through several trial-and-error experi-ments, figured a way to heat the liquid sulfur, melt it andtransfer it safely and efficiently.

“We tried to get Dupont to patent it. They said it was amechanical thing, and they were into chemical things,”Burdick said.

So, in 1954, the two mustered $40 — Burdick borrowed hishalf from a local grocer — and started their own business. That first year, sales were somewhere around $1,300. Lastyear, the same figure for Thermon — now a multinational cor-poration — was $290 million.

Those early years, Burdick said he spent a lot of the time onthe road building sales: And that was just the way he liked it.

“I had a 1955 Oldmosbile, and I put 100,000 miles on thatcar, going back and forth across the country setting up sales,”Burdick said.

A 1950 Mark 5 JaguarThermon thrived and, starting in 1979 with his distributor’s

Model-T, Burdick began collecting cars. He guesses he ownsaround 250 if you count all the cars in his first museum andall the cars he has in storage — everything from aLamborghini to a 1929 Duesenberg made for the president ofCoca-Cola. But the featured cars here in San Marcos weremade between the years of 1929 and 1959, years that Burdickno doubt remembers well.

He can only hope that those who visit the museum get thatsame feeling, that a certain memory comes back.

“What most people end up with is ‘this car was just like theone my daddy had, or this car was just like my granddaddy’s,”Burdick said. And then he pauses and looks out over hisshowroom, remembering another car, and another story. Thisone’s about his daughter.

“It’s sort of like that 1950 Mark 5 Jaguar that I have,”Burdick said. “I had one of those when my youngest daughterNikki was born. She was born here in San Marcos, but welived at the ranch in Rosanke. Anyway, I went to go pick her,my wife and my mother-in-law up in that Jaguar to head backto Rosanke. Well then the brakes went out on us. I had tobaby it all the way home with the emergency brake on.”

Every car has a story behind it. For Burdick, it’s just amatter of tracking ‘em down.

Complex Care. Simple Choice.Hays County is growing and so is the Seton Family of Hospitals. Seton Medical

Center Hays in Kyle is the largest hospital in the county, offering a comprehensive

range of emergency, medical, surgical, diagnostic and maternity services on our

medical campus. In addition to these services, we’ve started an open-heart

program, state-of-the-art cardiac services and stroke center for the rapidly

growing community. The choice for the kind of medical care you need is simple

– because it’s all in one place.
