“I saw my bike was on fire in mybackyard and I tried to put it out,”said Elliott, who’s been riding e-bikes for years. “I picked up a fire

Midway planners hear about Gulls’ plans for Pechanga ArenaBy Dave Schwab | The Beacon

Matt Savant of the San Diego Gulls dropped in on Midway-Pacific Highway Community Planning Group Sept. 18 to fill community planners in on the latest develop-ments with future operations at Pechanga Arena San Diego.

Formerly the Sports Arena, Pechanga is a central and key piece in future redevelopment of the en-tire Midway area, much of which is commercial, industrial and ware-house space.

A month ago, the group that owns the San Diego Gulls minor hockey league team, Anaheim Arena Management (AAM), was selected by the City of San Diego to replace Pechanga Arena’s current operator, Arena Group 2000, as arena manager following a request for proposals (RFP) process.

Noting the Gulls are now enter-ing their fifth season, Savant said the minor league farm club for the NHL Anaheim Ducks has been welcomed with open arms by San Diegans since its return.

“San Diego has supported us since day one,” noted Savant. “We’ve been the number one team in attendance all of the last four years in the AHL averaging 10,000 per night, as well as being the lead-er in merchandise selling.

“We now have the opportunity to manage operations at the sports arena, with a new lease starting June 1, 2020,” said Savant, point-ing out AHL players are “young kids ready to go play in the NHL. We’d like to control our fate as we move forward.”

Savant said the Gulls view the sports arena as a “community as-set” available to local groups to use arena schedule permitting.

“The Gulls, and our parent or-ganization, are the major tenant of the sports arena hosting the most events and generating the most rev-enue,” Savant said. “We’re looking at a short-term lease until the City decides ultimately what it wants to do with the site.”

A year ago, the City Council unanimously adopted on a new Midway community plan update

that revitalizes the area by more than doubling the capacity for fu-ture housing, providing 30 acres of new parkland and creating a new pathway for pedestrians and cyclists that connects Mission Bay and San Diego Bay.

The Midway-Pacific Highway Community Planning Group ar-ea currently has a population of about 5,600 and covers roughly 1,324 acres adjacent to the San Diego River, Interstate 5, two trol-ley stations and the San Diego International Airport.

Urban Corps of San Diego County workers cleaning up the Famosa Slough.

Correia Middle students, Urban Corps clean Famosa SloughBy Dave Schwab | The Beacon

Urban Corps members got paid while earning their high school GED equivalency and the environ-ment got cleansed.

That was the trade-off recently when Urban Corps of San Diego County workers recently spent sev-eral days restoring Famosa Slough at 4275-4283 W. Point Loma Blvd.

“We received a $15,000 grant through SDG&E’s Environmental Champions Initiative to restore the slough along with some Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) students from Correia Middle School,” said Lauren Welch, Urban Corps de-velopment manager, and grant author. “They put in some new trails, barbed wire, removed inva-sive plants, cleared brush and pro-vided water-quality improvements: restoration activities.”

A slough is a wetland, usually a swamp or shallow lake, often a backwater to a larger body of wa-ter. Famosa Slough is a 37-acre wetland between Ocean Beach and the Sports Arena arena bisected by West Point Loma Boulevard and bordered by Famosa Boulevard on the west.

Famosa Slough is flushed with salt water from the river channel and also collects rainwater from the surrounding neighborhood. Its 12-acre channel portion and

the 25-acre southern portion are owned and maintained by the City. Both portions are accessible by the public, and benches are located at view areas.

Urban Corps serves as a bridge to a better life for young adults ages 18-26. The program provides paid job training, support services, and a second chance to earn a high school diploma for participants, while simultaneously offering a variety of professional services to

the community, which also helps train and employ corps members.

Corps’ youth gain job skills on environmental, construction, and community projects, whether planting a tree, removing graffiti, working in the San Diego River, improving a park or rehabilitating low-income homes.

“Urban Corps is giving me a chance to help the community and the environment through this proj-ect at the Famosa Slough, restoring

the wetland and the surrounding area,” said corps member Hernan Partida. “Like today, we installed new posts for the trail around the slough. I am grateful to have this opportunity to learn hard work and give back through the Urban Corps.”

“It has always been a part of our mission to care for the environment and the community around us,” said Kyle Kennedy, Urban Corps’ CEO. “The Famosa Slough is an

important wetland in our com-munity and right down the street from our operations (3127 Jefferson St.). We are thrilled to partner with SDG&E, Correia Middle School and Friends of the Famosa Slough to re-store the slough through this com-munity project.”

Welch said about 30, eight-mem-ber crews from Urban Corps work eight-hour days on community projects from Oceanside to the U.S.-Mexico border. There are presently about 220 San Diego Urban Corps members, who can be easily iden-tified by their uniforms.

“They have button-down olive dark green safety vests and wear hard hats,” Welch noted.

Urban Corps roots go back to Gov. Jerry Brown’s creation of the California Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1976 as a legacy to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps founded in 1933.

Over time, Urban Corps has given thousands of underserved, low-in-come young adults the opportunity to finish high school while earning a paycheck, while improving them-selves and advancing their own communities.

After completing the program, youth are more employable, have the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the workforce, and know the importance of resource preservation and giving back to the community.

Point Loma business founder admits mail fraudby Neal Putnam | The Beacon

The founder of a closed Point Loma electronic business pleaded guilty Sept. 12 to mail fraud and has agreed to repay $20 million to hundreds of victims.

Jonny Ngo, 33, faces up to 20 years in federal prison when he is sentenced on Jan. 10, 2020 by U.S. District Court Judge Jeff Miller, his plea agreement shows.

Ngo raised more than $61 million from 350 investors for the company. The business, NL Technology LLC, closed its Rosecrans Street shop in 2018, and Ngo was indicted by a federal grand jury in April.

Court documents show the number of victims in the hundreds which al-so include some businesses. The total loss to everyone is $20,292.490.60, according to court documents.

Ngo remains in the Metropolitan Correctional Center without bail after U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry Kurren deemed him a flight risk and described Ngo as posing "an eco-nomic danger to the community."

He was the owner and president of NL Technology and has consented to a money judgement against him along with forfeiture of any money or assets.

The business imported whole-sale electronic and technology-re-lated products for resale in the U.S. A lawsuit filed against Ngo by the Securities & Exchange Commission says he purchased bulk electronics abroad for resale in the U.S.

The wire fraud charges involve email communications for an order to pur-chase smartphone parts and screens and transfer of funds from victims.

Twenty other counts of mail fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering will be dismissed at his sentencing.

The SEC suit says Ngo and another man converted investor funds to pay for "extravagant lifestyles" such as lux-ury cars, watches, homes, and spend-ing other funds at casinos. To conceal

the fraud, Ngo allegedly fabricated bank statements and financial records.

"Mr. Ngo's alleged technology busi-ness scheme was, in fact, a plan to deceive investors, luring them into a false sense of security about their investments, falsifying documents to

cover the lies and stealing the funds for personal use," said FBI special agent in charge, Suzanne Turner, after his indictment.

The SEC suit won a $4.5 mil-lion judgement against Ngo in September 2018.

Drunk driver who killed OB man sentenced to 11 years

By Neal Putnam | The Beacon

A drunk driver who killed an Ocean Beach man was sentenced Sept. 27 to 11 years and eight months in prison after the victim’s family told the judge how much his life meant to them.

The parents, brothers, and friends of Justin Callahan, 35, told San Diego Superior Court Judge Runston Maino about his life, with one telling the driver he would have forgiven her.

Lauren Ashley Freeman, 24, cried, telling the audience “I would do anything to bring Justin back.”

Deputy District Attorney Laura Evans said Freeman’s blood alco-hol level was approximately .28 — over three times the legal limit. “She was driving the wrong way for almost two miles,” said Evans.

Freeman struck Callahan’s Toyota Camry at 1:55 a.m. on Feb. 26, 2018 on a transition ramp be-tween Interstate 8 and I-5 in Ocean

Beach. His family said he clocked out at 1:30 a.m. at a Chula Vista business and was almost home.

Initial ly, the Cali fornia Highway Patrol found Callahan at fault by saying he drove the wrong way, but investigators later determined it was Freeman who was responsible.

Evans said Freeman was drinking heavily in an Ocean Beach bar. Her phone contained a selfie of herself there. Evans said she disregarded four signs on the onramp that showed she was driving the wrong way.

She pleaded guilty July 26 to gross vehicular manslaughter and drunk driving with injury to her passenger who had a broken foot and clavicle. A second-degree murder charge was dismissed.

Lowell Callahan, the vic-tim’s father, told the judge that Scriptures and the Book of Mormon “help us get through when things are tough.

Frustrated would-be carjacker ordered to stand trial By Neal Putnam | The Beacon

A would-be carjacker who didn’t know how to start a high-tech car was ordered to stand trial for rob-bery and attempted carjacking at a Midway Drive store.

Video of the incident was shown

at the preliminary hearing in which the robber angrily threw the victim’s car keys in frustration after he was unable to start a 2013 Chevrolet Volt hybrid car on Jan. 7.

The car’s owner, Juan Sandoval, testified a driver must step on the brake before pushing a button to

start it and also have a key fob pres-ent in order to operate the vehicle.

Sandoval said his car never left the 7-Eleven store he parked at 6 a.m. on Midway Drive while getting coffee. The charge is attempted car-jacking because the vehicle was nev-er moved. Robbery is charged as the

bandit took his car keys and phone.A trial date of Jan. 7, 2020, was

set for Robert John Bustillos, 40, and he pleaded not guilty at the end of the hearing conducted by San Diego Superior Court Judge Carolyn Caietti.

Deputy District Attorney James Koerber played videotape of the 7-Eleven

surveillance cameras that showed Bustillos approaching the car owner as he was carrying coffee to his car.

There is no audio on the tape. Sandoval identified Bustillos as the robber and said he initially asked for spare change. He then pointed a red satchel at him that suggested a gun was in the satchel.

‘Troll patrol’ forms in Ocean Beach; but who are they targeting?By Dave Schwab | The Beacon

Ocean Beach ad hoc group call-ing themselves the “troll patrol” is seizing the initiative in attempting to reign-in bad characters behaving irresponsibly.

Some critics, however, warn the troll patrol is singling out and ha-rassing the homeless.

But those critics are missing the point, said Chris Reefer, the troll pa-trol's originator, and spokesperson.

“We formed out of frustration over people public urinating, open-ly doing drugs around schools, hop-ping fences and trespassing, suck-er-punching people, committing assaults and break-ins, drawing weapons, etc.” said Reefer.

“It’s been so nerve-wracking, people don’t even want to go to the mom-and-pop shops or to Saratoga Park or to surf,” he said. So Reefer started a Facebook page of the same name as the group in order to “keep the momentum going” and to serve

as a “wake-up call.”The troll patrol, now numbering

upwards of a thousand advocates since it started in May, is targeting “trolls,” not the homeless, according to Reefer.

“A troll refers to a form of behavior (aggressive panhandling, bad man-ners, public intoxication, loitering, bike theft, sexual assault, breaking into homes),” said Reefer, not any sort of person.

“You can be homeless, mentally ill or troubled by substance abuse and not be a troll,” Reefer added. “You could be a trust fund millionaire and be the worst troll on Newport Avenue. Being homeless is often not a choice while being a troll is ‘always’ a choice.

A recent “random sample” taken by the Peninsula Beacon of people along Ocean Beach’s seawall near the pier, found some sympathetic to the troll patrol — and others decid-edly not.

Artist “Stony” was appreciative of

the group’s efforts.“This is Ocean Beach’s way of

locals being able to keep track of what’s going on, because there’s some gnarly [expletive] that hap-pens, and some people with troubled minds down here,” Stony said. “It’s a self-governing body that came up on its own. If somebody gets crazy, everyone gets together and says, ‘Get the hell out of here.’ That’s the ener-gy we’re talking about.”

A homeless person on the seawall, identifying herself as “Mama T,” dis-agreed with Stony’s take on the troll patrol.

“It's not necessary,” she said. “They’re terrorizing. It’s not cool.”

Added Mama T: “We have our own enforcers to take care of a bad situation. We’re warriors. We keep people in check. We don’t need police.”

Transgressions against OB’s homeless are very real, according to Mama T.

Trying to explain the angst,

Mama T noted, “You can’t have all this beauty and paradise without having a dark side. The dark side is drugs, and people sleeping on the street, and the troll hunters. They hunt us down and set on us for sleep-ing. They’re taking it way way too far.”

Disability rights attorney Ann E. Menasche, who is representing homeless people living in their ve-hicles, said she hadn’t heard of the troll patrol. But she noted: “They are clearly vigilantes targeting the most vulnerable residents of the City. They are no better than racist vigilante groups that attack immigrants.”

Added Menasche, “If [troll pa-trols] were truly concerned with the homelessness crisis, they would stop blaming the victims and demand that the City take decisive action by passing effective rent control and go-ing after real estate speculators that are turning this city into a place only for the wealthy.”

Den ny K nox, execut ive

director of Ocean Beach MainStreet Association, pointed out “the transient bad actor problem is improving.”

“We are working with SDPD and our security every day to address the ever-changing situation,” said Knox. “Residents and visitors are fed up with crime and gross behavior. Some of them are peacefully mov-ing the bad behaviorists along and suggesting they leave the area if these folks can’t be respectful of our community.”

Added Knox: “I think we should stop referring to them as homeless. Many of these bad behaviorists are on drugs, alcohol, or just bad actors. They aren’t necessarily homeless who need shelter. The locals who are engaging with some of these folks and walking them out of town are careful to focus on the bad behav-iorists. Everyone, including SDPD, our security team, and locals offer services and work on being compas-sionate, yet firm.”

Unique antiques and collectables at Consignment ClassicsBy Dave Schwab | The Beacon

Consignment Classics in the Midway area is a feast of antiques and collectibles.

There are about 100 private dealers renting space in the 40,000-square-foot outlet at 3602 Kurtz St., which has everything from furniture and jewelry to art, glass and photo framing.

A companion store at 1895 Hancock St. carries mostly home furnishings.

“We’ve got three or four things going on here,” said business co-owner Frank Simpson. “We’ve got dealers who rent space as an antique and collectible mall. We have a little bit of stuff on consign-ment that we take in. We’ve got a rug guy, lamps, art and mirrors.”

Of his dealers, Simpson said, “They do this as a business. A lot of the people have been collecting,

and now they want to get rid of it.”Consignment is an arrangement

in which goods are left in the pos-session of an authorized third par-ty to sell. Typically, the consignor receives a percentage of the reve-nue from the sale in the form of a commission.

“Weekends are very busy,” noted Simpson of his Kurtz Street loca-tion. “Most of this building is deal-ers with products to sell. We’ve only been doing this a little over a year. It used to be consignment only.”

Simpson said Consignment Classics has also partnered up with a busy estate sales group.

A lot of displaced antique deal-ers, previously on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach, now make their home at Consignment Classics.

Who comes to Consignment Classics and what are they look-ing for?

“People who collect things, like

dolls,” answered Simpson. “Or peo-ple looking for gifts, like something for a kid going to college.”

A fun business to be in?“I enjoy it, I’ve been doing this for

about 17 years,” replied Simpson, noting he purchased the already-es-tablished consignment store when he had a mirror and glass business. He knew the consignment business owner and purchased the business when it became available.

“We’re the biggest in San Diego County for sure,” said Simpson add-ing there are a couple dozen con-signment stores locally. “We may even be the biggest in the state.”

The consignment business is somewhat seasonal. Summers are

slow, said Simpson, pointing out business picks up in the fall until Thanksgiving. Demand for furni-ture drops off at year’s end around Christmas but shoppers looking for gifts picks up. “It picks up again mid- to late January,” Simpson said.

Looking around, there are

literally thousands of pieces of in-dividual items of all types.

“And it changes just constantly,” noted Simpson who talked about the most recent trend in antiques.

“Right now the hot thing of value is older Chinese vases, plates and art,” he said.

OB GARDEN CAFE CLOSED

OB Garden Cafe, a vegetarian café opened 1 1/2 years ago by Ocean Beach People’s Organic Food Market, has shuttered.

The last day of operation for the cafe at 4741 Voltaire St., in the space that formerly was Tiny’s Tavern, was Saturday, Sept. 14, said Jim Kase, gen-eral manager for OB People’s co-op.

The full-service organic vegetari-an eatery opened in March 2018 and served lunch and dinner.

“A lot of people came in, loved the cafe and patronized it,” said Kase. “But it did not have a sustainable level of business to keep it open.”

Noting 80% of restaurants fail to last five years, Kase said it was a near-unanimous decision by the co-op’s governing board to close the cafe after it failed to meet expectations.

“We took out a loan, built a building, and it was received fairly well at first,” said Kase. “But sales weren’t growing. The cafe could not sustain itself, and we were putting our co-op at risk, which

was the last thing we wanted to do. We felt we gave it more than a fair chance to do well and to grow.”

Kase said the co-op is “exploring options” on what to do with the cafe building.

“We’re going to do what is best for our organization, whether that be leasing the building to another restaurant, either established or new, or selling the building,” he said. “We just haven’t figured out what that is yet. It’s very sad we had to close it, but we felt we had no other choice.”

DIRTY BIRDS NOW OPEN IN OCEAN BEACH PLAZA

San Diego's popular wing-fo-cused,1,200-square-foot sports bar Dirty Birds opened recently at 1929 Cable St. in the newly built Ocean Beach Plaza.

The eatery’s opening was delayed by the denial of a full Type-47 li-quor license. Founded in 2008 by Jon Ollis and Adam Jacoby in Pacific Beach, Dirty Birds now has locations near SDSU, inside Liberty

Station in Point Loma, and a fifth location planned at UC San Diego campus in La Jolla replacing Round Table Pizza.

OB Plaza also houses Mr. Moto Pizza House, which also recently opened. Dirty Birds offers nearly 40 different wing flavors as well as sandwiches, salads, burgers, sliders and appetizers. The bar serves nu-merous craft beers on tap and wine by the glass.

Busy and delicious Pho Point Loma & GrillJudi Curry | The Beacon

In my quest to visit restaurants that have remained in business for a relatively long time, my re-cent stop with Hugh was at Pho Point Loma & Grill on Midway Drive, across from the TJ Max, Home Goods, etc. shopping cen-ter, and sharing the same park-ing lot as Smart and Final.

We arrived at 11:45 a.m. and the place was absolutely packed. All of the three dining rooms were f illed; there were people waiting in line for a table. The servers needed roller skates to get to all of the tables, yet no one seemed rushed or upset. After the servers took the orders, ma-ny different people delivered the food to the tables. It is truly a well “run” organization.

The menu is extensive, with offerings of appetizers, pho beef noodles, rice and entrees, French sandwiches, summer salads, veg-gie delights, vermicelli, stir fry noodles, desserts, beer and wine, and a variety of beverages, includ-ing boba.

Hugh and I decided to try two appetizers and share one entrée offering. We started out with two fresh spring rolls for healthy eat-ing, no oil with steamed shrimp and lean pork thinly sliced, rice noodle, bean spout, paired with special peanut plum hoisin dip-ping sauce.

And because this was so healthy, we decided to go to the other extreme with Muc Chien Don, translated to be “deep-fried calamari” that was lightly bat-tered and deep-fried, tossed with

garlic, pepper and scallions. The back page of the menu

offered special entrees, and we elected to have their CC Do 8 Khom Dua, which was shrimp, scallops, crab, rice, scallions, and peas in a wonderful sauce made from pineapple and co-conut. There was more than enough for Hugh and I to share.

The three items that we ordered were cooked to perfection. The calamari was served hot, with a spicy-sweet sauce; the spring rolls were served cold with a delightful peanut sauce.

Somehow, in our ordering, the server thought that we had ordered a chicken and cashew meal. We did not, and he took it back without question. I did take a photo of it because it looked like something we might order

in the future.Although we took home one

spring roll and a fair amount of the calamari, we managed to finish the entrée because it was that good.

By the time we left the restau-rant at 1 p.m., there were some empty tables, but until that time there was a steady stream of din-ers with take-out orders as well as dine-in orders. I asked if they were always this busy and was told that lunch and dinner are always packed. I was also told that they have been in that lo-cation for the past seven years. With what we saw today, I pre-sume that they will be there for many more years. We will be back!

New app launches in San Diego, lets you rent out your driveway By Emily Blackwood | The Beacon

Driving up and down city streets,

meticulously looking for a parking spot is a community-wide headache that most residents have come to know — and hate. But a new app, recently launched in San Diego, could potentially save you the Advil.

Drivewayz is a free app that al-lows drivers to rent private park-ing spots for roughly $10 an hour.

Customers also have the option to book a parking spot days in advance.

The app was founded in Boulder, Colorado last year, and CEO Reese Barracks said he chose San Diego for the company's headquarters because it was “more open to new ideas.” The app is available nationwide.

“The idea came to me when I was in school, and my friends and I were

searching for a spot up and down a local street,” Barracks said. “There was a concert going on and it got pretty crowded. We would pass open driveway after open driveway but all the street parking was taken.

"I just thought, ‘I would totally pay a few bucks an hour to park in one of these open parking spots. And I’m sure people would love to make extra cash since they’re not being used.’”

Users who sign up their drive-ways can set their availability to certain times, be it 24 hours a day or one hour a month. Drivewayz currently doesn’t cover insurance for the driver or the homeowner, but Barracks said that’s something they’d like to offer eventually, once they get more customers.

Currently, the app has more than 600 downloads and is only available on iOS with Android availability

coming in the near future. “We’re really trying to create

parking for the community from community members,” Barracks said. “Putting money back into the local economy as opposed to the widespread parking industry.”

At the essence of it, Barracks said Drivewayz is like saving “an extra spot for your neighbor.”

TRAGEDY STRIKES HIGH TECH HIGH TEACHER

This summer, Dustin and Sofia Tannenhaus, an instructor at High Tech High in Liberty Station, were traveling abroad in Europe. The couple were celebrating precious milestones in their life: Dustin had earned a month-long sabbatical, and Sofia had just finished a suc-cessful year as a teacher at HTH.

Four weeks into their vacation, on Saturday, July 20, everything changed. Dustin dropped Sofia off at a local gym and went for a run near the water, just like any other day. When he finished his intense

workout, he became ill. As it turned out, he was suffering from heat ex-haustion from a heatwave that cul-minated in heat stroke.

With the help of locals Sofia met at the gym that morning, they rushed Dustin to the hospital. But by the time he reached the hospital, he had fallen into a coma, which ended in cardiac arrest, five days before his 34th birthday. After returning from their tragic trip, Sofia discovered she was with child. While Sofia is excited, she never anticipated being a single mom, and raising a child on her teacher income will be extremely challeng-ing. A GoFundMe drive has been set up for Sofia Tannenaus, gofundme.com/f/DustinTannenhaus, orga-nized by Tin Lib.

Sinatra and fun contests. The beachside festival contin-

ues Oct. 12 with food, merchan-dise booths and a beachside stage featuring musicians. Festivities continue at 11 a.m. when the beer garden in the pier parking lot opens with traditional bratwurst-eating, stein-holding, and Ms. Oktoberfest contests, as well as the outrageous balloon blow.

Each brewery will feature one style of beer.

BEYOND BRIDGE MUSICAL CELEBRATION ON OCT. 19

The Third Annual Beyond Bridge Musical Celebration will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Loma Club in Liberty Station. Attendees will gather to listen to all-acoustic performanc-es from nine bands, participate in

The Pioneer Foundation supports the Pioneer Day School, a non-pub-lic school with three “campuses” in Ocean Beach, where dedicat-ed teachers create high-quality programs, including music ther-apy programs, that maximize the potential of kids from all over San Diego who area who are un-derserved in mainstream public schools.

WINE-TASTING TO BENEFIT PLHS MUSICIANS

The Point Loma High School music boosters are teaming with a local gourmet grocer to raise funds for the school's talented student musicians. The group has planned a wine-tasting event in coopera-tion with Jensen's Foods that will feature over 70 wines from dozens

of wineries. All wines tasted will be offered at special one-day-only prices for those wishing to place orders. The event will be held on Oct. 17 from 5-7 p.m. in the Jensen's offices located across the parking lot from Jensen's Foods in the Loma Plaza building. Tickets are current-ly on sale at Jensen's of they may be purchased at jensensfoods.com/winetasting.

All funds raised will go directly to the highly successful Pointer mu-sic program which includes concert band, winds ensemble, jazz band, orchestra, guitar group, choir and color guard. School district funding pays only for the teacher's salary and provides no money for instru-ment purchase or repair, buses for travel to competitions or other costs.

HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL

The Sunset View Elementary Halloween Carnival will take place 3:30-7:30 p.m. on Oct. 19. Family entertainment for everyone and all are welcome. There will be laser tag, dunk tank, haunted house, DJ, games, food trucks, and more.

The dynamic and selective group of artists represent a variety of medi-ums such as painting, sculpture, jewelry design, fine glass, ceram-ics, woodwork, mixed media and photography.

WHEELCHAIR REGATTA

Silver Gate Yacht Club’s 59th annual Wheelchair Regatta – with members and community volun-teers joining forces to give disabled guests a “day on the bay” – will take place Sunday, Oct. 20, at the club on Shelter Island Drive. The event requires careful coordination of all volunteers to ensure a safe and enjoyable day for hundreds among San Diego’s disabled community. Volunteers are still needed for a number of positions. Also needed are power boats, which can accom-modate a minimum of four guests, preferably 10-12 guests.

For more information, email Lisa Clements at [email protected] or call the club office at 619-222-1214.

WOW Festival at Liberty Station set for Oct. 17-20Without Walls Festival (WOW),

a four-day celebration by La Jolla Playhouse of site-based and inter-active performances in conjunction with the NTC Foundation, will take place Oct. 17-20 at Arts District Liberty Station.

Joining the WOW Festival line-up will be three more projects by Arts District Liberty Station-based companies: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by San Diego Ballet; Pandora and the Jar of Hope, by Theatre Arts School of San Diego; and Without a Net, by Malashock Dance.

“The Arts District is looking for-ward to hosting all these creative artists from around the world at our beautiful campus in Point Loma,” said Alan Ziter, NTC Foundation executive director. “Programs like La Jolla Playhouse’s WOW Festival

are what the community envi-sioned for the former Navy base’s new mission as a vibrant new San Diego center for arts, culture and creativity. We’re excited about our partnership with La Jolla Playhouse and for what the community will see at the festival.”

Since its inception in 2011, WOW has become one of San Diego’s most popular and acclaimed perfor-mance programs. This signature La Jolla Playhouse initiative is de-signed to break the barriers of tra-ditional theatre, offering immersive and site-inspired works that ven-ture beyond the physical confines of the playhouse facilities.

Additional local projects at WOW 2019 will include Calafia at Liberty, by Wetsuit Collective; How High the Moon, by Mike Sears; Inclusion, by San Diego Circus Center; PDA, by

People of Interest; and Theatre on the Move, by Oracle Performing Arts.

Other projects joining the festi-val include Allegory, by New York- based artists Sammi Cannold, Emily Maltby and Ari Afsar; As

Far As My Fingertips Take Me, by Beirut/London-based artist Tania El Khoury; Portals: Interactive Connected Trees, by Israel-based artist Matan Berkowitz; She Buried the Pistol, by the New York-based

Hearth Theater; and a return of Australia’s Strange Fruit with their new production of Tall Tales of the High Seas.

Visit lajollaplayhouse.org for more information.

Inclusion, by San Diego Circus Center, will perform on the North Promenade.

Fumbles give Dons three quick scores in rout of PointersBY SCOTT HOPKINS | The Beacon

There was good news and bad news for the Pointer football team during last week's Western League opener at Cathedral Catholic, a 50-14 Dogs loss.

On the bright side, the Pointers scored twice, and their 14 points were the most scored against Cathedral by all other schools ex-cept Helix (a 44-41 Dons win).

On the downside, the Pointers' starting QB fumbled and lost the ball three times in a span of just 1:24 the second quar-ter, each leading to Cathedral touchdowns. These 21 gi ft points increased their lead from 15-7 to 36-7 at halftime before the Cathedral homecoming

celebration began.Subtracting those quick points

still leaves Cathedral ahead 29-14 but gives a more accurate im-pression of a much closer game.

The Pointer touchdowns came early and late in the game.

The first came right after the Dons took an early 7-0 lead when the Pointer offense began mov-ing the ball before Jason Peres found Kaden Gill uncovered on a 23-yard scoring play to brief ly knot the score at 7-7.

By the time the Dogs found the end zone again they were down 50-7 and the game was being played with a running clock as part of the CIF's mercy rule. Backup QB Trey Cobb found Gill with another scoring pass, this

time for a 10-yard score on the first play of the final quarter.

W h i l e p r i m a r i l y b e i n g stalled in their ground game, the Pointers had some success through the air, with the two QB's totaling 169 yards in addi-tion to the two scores.

"I'm really proud of our kids," head coach Mike Hastings said on the sidelines after the game end-ed. "I thought we grew tonight as a team because we played so hard. We made some mistakes,

but the score's not indicative of how hard we competed on the field. I saw our kids supporting each other, loving each other and playing the game the way it's supposed to be played as one EMAP family."

Extra points• Next up for the Pointers is an

unusual late-season non-league game Oct. 11 at University City. The Centurions, a Div. III team, are 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the

Eastern League. They are giving up 45 points per game. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m.

• On Oct. 18 the Pointers re-turn home for a Western League showdown with Madison. The Warhawks are 4-2 this year with a 30-14 win over league foe Lincoln.

• The Pointer freshman team is now 3-2-1 after a 41-18 loss to Cathedral and the junior varsity moved to 3-3 when Cathedral de-feated them 41-6.

Point Loma defenders including Tristan Shafer (7), Cameron Green (rear) and Landon Green (10) bring down a Cathedral runner during last week's game.

Cross country runs to winsBY SCOTT HOPKINS | The Beacon

Point Loma's cross country runners have been earning rec-ognition in recent meets.

Junior Jake Richardson fin-ished f irst in a f ield of 110 runners at the recent inaugu-ral Ian Cumming/Tim Latham Invitational meet involving 40 teams. Held at Chula Vista's Rohr Park, Richardson won the 5K in a time of 15:58.17, winning by a wide margin of 21 seconds over his nearest competitor.

Richardson's win helped the Pointers to a third place finish in the Red Devils division of the

meet behind champion Scripps Ranch and second place Otay Ranch.

Earlier, Richardson won the junior boys race in the Wolf Pack Invitational at West Hills High with a time of 9:48 on a 2.1 mile course, leading Point Loma to the team title.

The Pointer girls won the team title at the Rohr Park event de-spite not having an individual winner. Senior Katherine Taylor was fourth in a field of 107 as her team defeated Eastlake 54-68 for the championship.

The girls team is currently listed sixth in San Diego CIF rankings.

Point Loma junior Jake Richardson runs to victory in a 5K race at Chula Vista's Rohr Park.

San Diego Music Hall of Fame ceremony at Newbreak ChurchBart Mendoza | The Beacon

It’s no secret that San Diego’s current music scene is thriving. That success, however, comes through the hard work of many earlier musicians and industry folk who laid the groundwork to today’s burgeoning music com-munity. It’s for this reason that a San Diego Music Hall of Fame has been created, with its sec-ond annual presentation cere-mony taking place on Oct. 18 at Newbreak Church.

This year’s inductees include the late blues legend Candye Kane, jazz saxophonist Charles McPherson, bluegrass guitar-ist Walt Richards, trumpeter Bill Caballero, blues guitarist Robin Henkel, and singer Eve Selis. Meanwhile, performers will include Henkel and Selis as well as guitarist Mark Goffeney, The David Sullivan Jazz Group, acoustic hip-hop troubadour Rob Deez and the Candye Kane Alumni Band, featuring pianist Sue Palmer and singer Casey Hensley.

Musician, promoter, and presi-dent of the Hall of Fame, Jefferson Jay, considers the creation of this honor to be long overdue. “I love San Diego and the music com-munity here has made a mas-sive positive impact on my life,” he said. “I am hoping this San Diego Music Hall of Fame will

help build a deeper appreciation and a greater awareness of those who have lived their lives making sure we all have inspiring music.”

For now, the Hall of Fame “cur-rently lives online at sdmhof.com and at our annual event, but I am very open to finding a loca-tion when the right opportunity emerges,” Jay said.

For Jay, it’s important to include all aspects of the local music scene. “It takes all kinds of people to make an entire music commu-nity,” he explained. “Musicians from every genre, everyone working at venues, music stores, music schools, musical theater, instrument makers, in military music, non-profit organizations,

and media all play crucial roles in ensuring that millions of peo-ple in our region can enjoy San Diego-based music every day,” Jay continued.

“Our goals are to honor those who have given so much for our musical community and to in-crease awareness of and pride in San Diego’s long, rich musical history.”

Drummer Evan Caleb Yearsley is proud that his mother, Candye Kane, will be honored this year. He will be performing with singer Casey Hensley. “I know my moth-er would feel honored and excited to be recognized for all her hard work and accomplishments,” he said. “She always loved coming home to San Diego after a long tour, walk on the beach and en-joy the beauty that is San Diego. Touring over 250 days a year, you’re not home much but when you are, San Diego is a beautiful place to call home.

“I’m grateful and honored to be accepting the San Diego Music Hall Of Fame Induction for my mother Candye Kane on her be-half. I also thought it was a great chance to celebrate her legacy by performing some of her music, her love, her life.”

For his part, Jay’s goals for the future of the event are straight-forward. “I would love to keep the event in Ocean Beach. We have expanded since last year,

moving to the larger Newbreak Church from the smaller OB Playhouse, which we sold out last year. We are very excited to work with Pastor Carter Moss at the church. He is a fine communi-ty leader and we are grateful that they chose to host us this year. Time will tell if we can keep it in OB.”

Meanwhile, he’s succinct on what he hopes audience members take away from this event. “Our goal is to make sure that more people feel enriched by the musi-cal part of being San Diegan,” Jay said. “I met my wife and almost

all of my best friends through making music here.

“A lot of people don’t realize how many terrific people, who are also great musicians, have chosen to live in San Diego, de-spite the fact it can be a very challenging place to be a musi-cian. I am extremely humbled and grateful to be part of our music community and this is my attempt to give back,” he said good-naturedly.

San Diego Music Hall of Fame: Friday, Oct. 18, at Newbreak Church, 4694 Cape May Ave. 7 p.m. All ages. sdmhof.com.The late blues legend Candye Kane will

be inducted to the San Diego Music Hall of Fame posthumously.
