5Samut Sakhon

Then, in 1913, King Rama VI announced a royal command for the government to transform the word “Mueang” to “Changwat” -province- throughout the country. Mueang Samut Sakhon was changed to “Changwat Samut Sakhon” as it is still known at the present time. The word “Maha Chai” that people usually used is the name of a canal dug across the crooked Khlong Khok Kham which is the symbol of the loyalty of Phanthai Norasing.

Samut Sakhon covers an area of 872 square kilometres and is divided into 3 districts (Amphoes); namely, Amphoe Mueang, Amphoe Krathum Baen and Amphoe Ban Phaeo.

Samut Sakhon, called by the locals as “Maha Chai” is a small province located on the mouth of the Tha Chin River, only 2 kilometres from the sea and 36 kilometres from Bangkok. It is a historic city recorded in the Ayutthaya chronicle. This was during the period that Phrachao Suea travelled by the royal barge procession creating the story of the loyal Phanthai Norasing.

This province was originally called as “Tha Chin” because it was a large district on the Gulf of Thailand, where there were a lot of foreigners, especially the Chinese -Chin- who travelled by ship and stopped at the port –Tha- for trading. Therefore, it was verbally well known as Tambon “Tha Chin”. In the reign of King Rama IV, the city’s name was changed into Mueang Samut Sakhon.

During the reign of King Rama V, he conducted governance reform by organizing the regional bureaucratic system in the form of a circle called “Monthon Thesaphiban” and announced the establishment of Thailand’s first sanitary district in Tambon Tha Chalom in 1906.

the temple was constructed. Wat Krok Krak houses “Luangpho Pu”- the much revered laterite principal Buddha image in the attitude of subduing Mara (late Sukhothai style) wearing sunglasses. According to local legend, the Buddha image was being floated down the river and finally placed in the Ubosot or ordination hall. Khlong Khok Kham (คลองโคกขาม) is a very winding canal. Some parts of it are 90-degree curves. The tide is so strong that it is very difficult to control a boat. This caused an accident when Phrachao Suea or Somdet Phra Sanphet VIII (1703-1709) went along Khlong Khok Kham on his private trip by the Ekkachai Royal Barge. The barge hit a branch of a tree and Phanthai Norasing as the

steersman took responsibility by being executed. A straight shortcut through the curving canal was dug by the order of Phrachao Suea at the execution spot. Chaophraya Ratchasongkhram was a leader of 3,000 soldiers in the operation of digging the shortcut in 1705, connecting with the Tha Chin River. The shortcut was 5 Wa-width and 6 Sok-depth and was finished in 1709 in the reign of King Thai Sa. The king gave its name as “Khlong Sanam Chai” and this was later changed into “Khlong Maha Chai”. However, it is called by the locals as “Khlong Than”. At the mouth of Khlong Maha Chai, next to Khlong Khok Kham is situated another shrine of Phanthai Norasing.

Phanthai Norasing Historical Park (อุทยานประวัติศาสตรพันทายนรสิงห) is located in Tambon Phanthai Norasing, around where the monument was established to commemorate Phanthai Norasing and the “broken prow” incident. Phanthai Norasing came from Norasing village (now Amphoe Pa Mok of Ang Thong province) and served Somdet Phra Sanphet VIII (King Phrachao Suea) as a “Phanthai” or helmsman of the ‘Ekkachai’ Royal Barge in the Ayutthaya period. At the time when the royal procession arrived at the meandering path of Khlong Khok Kham, Phanthai Norasing could not avoid crashing the prow into the tree branch in spite of his careful steering. The sentence of such negligence according to the ancient monarch law was decapitation.

Instead of hesitation, he insisted on taking the penalty although the king was reluctant to execute his confidant. However, to protect the law, the king had no choice but ordering him to be beheaded; therefore, further

commanded for the construction of a shrine as a tribute to Phanthai Norasing’s sacrifice for the sake of the sacred law that featured a scaffold of the incident and the ruins of a barge, which is assumed to be the remains of the royal procession or the army dispatch in the past. The Park houses the shrine, which was reconstructed by the Fine Arts Department, of the much revered life-size sculptur of Phanthai Norasing poising in a barge steering position. Within the vicinity, there is also ‘Ho Phra’ or Buddha image shrine and Mae Si Nuan Shrine, which is a memorial for Phanthai Norasing’s wife, as well as, ‘Takhian’ or White Thingan wood believed to have been used as a decapitation post. In addition, enjoy a nature trail route featuring a well conserved mangrove forest and a ship’s wreck site unearthed in Mu 6.

It is believed that the Portuguese who resided in Thailand during that period might support the villagers to plant sugar cane to supply sugar factories because in the past, this area was a good location for planting cane as evident from many sugarcane press factories, which are called by the locals as “Rong Hip”. Later, due to the geographical change, some of the canals linked to one another. The tide could run through 3 areas of Lat Tha Pla, Lat Hang Pla and Lat Ko, making sea water flood the sugarcane field. When there was no sugarcane to supply the factories, the Portuguese sugarcane press factories and sugar factories had to stop their businesses and have been left deserted until the present.

To get there: Take Phetchakasem Road, passing Phutthamonthon Sai 4 Intersection to the Flora Inn Intersection (1 kilometre before the elephant show space) and turn left for

Wat Tha Krabue (วดัทากระบอื) is located at Ban Bang Yang, Tambon Bang Yang. Established in 1887, it was originally a monk’s residence and was later promoted to be a temple. The name of Wat Tha Krabue- literally translates “the temple of buffalo’s pier”– has its origin as the pier where a herd of buffalo and cattle came to drink and embark. Within the temple, visitors will find the following historical landmarks;

Ubosot or Ordination Hall, This rectangular Thai-style ordination hall built with bricks and mortar was constructed in 1942. Its wooden roof structure features tiled double roofing, each with 3 receding tiers. The front sees

columns supporting the roof, while the side wall features eaves brackets, and is built with bricks and mortar on a lotus-like base. The front entrance has two doors accented by a Mondop-shaped facade. The upper part of the wall between the windows features murals. The principal Buddha image in the attitude of meditation is enshrined here. Surrounding the building is a corridor with flights of stairs at the front and the sides. It has been renovated and also features new murals.

It is Thai architecture, built with bricks and mortar, and features tiled double roofing, each with 2 receding tiers, Cho Fa (hornlike gable finial), Bai Raka (tooth-like ridges on the sloping edges of a gable), and Hang Hong (small

finial protruding out of the two side corners of the gable). The front porch sees 4 columns supporting the roof, while the sides features a double–tiered roof, pilasters, eaves brackets, and walls built with bricks and mortar on a lotus-like base.

Subsidiary Chedi or Stupa, four subsidiary stupas are located in front of the ubosot while 8 more are by the image hall. These are bell-shaped stupas resting on a lotus base. Next is the Than Sing or so-called lion base, which is a decorative base with concave legs. We also see lotus moulding supporting the main bell-shaped body with 12 indented corners, topped with a set of lotus-shaped mouldings, tapering torus mouldings and pinnacle, some of them are ruined.
