Homework Policies
• Homework to be turned in the following day• Please sign/initial your child’s agenda book each
night• Expect:
– Reading and Language Arts-Superkids “Backpack Page” Monday – Thursday
-Reading nightly
–Math-Math fact practice
-Homework page 2-4 times a week after a lesson has been completed
Parent Responsibilities• Sign and check assignment book nightly• Check to make sure your child’s homework is
done neatly and correctly• Return any forms or paperwork sent home• Encourage your child to read independently for at
least 10-20 minutes each night and practice Math facts daily
• Send in an absence note the day after your child is absent from school
• Keep me informed of any problems or concerns that would effect your child’s school day.

Math • Math in Focus
– Math series based on principles of Singapore Math.• Basic (Pictorial)• Concrete• Abstract
– Extensive use of manipulatives to enhance student understanding of concepts and processes.
• Dreambox– Online program to supplement instruction– Password to allow access at home will be provided
Language Arts/Reading• Superkids
– Program developed by Pleasant Rowland (American Girls author).
– Designed exclusively for young, developing readers (Kindergarten thru 2nd grade)
– Emphasis on:• Fluency• Phonics• Comprehension• Encoding
-Non-Fiction SUPER magazine
RAZ Kids
~ Program designed to allow students to read
at their levels.
~ Hundreds of eBooks on a variety of
subjects with quizzes to check for comprehension

Writer’s Workshop• Afternoon block of Language Arts time
• Focus on development of writing skills– Sentence structure– Vivid language– Types of writing (Personal Narrative,
Persuasive, Poetry, and Informational)
• Students will be making books and developing their own personal writer’s notebook
• Includes cursive writing (to begin mid-year)

– FOSS Science kits utilizing hands-on observation and experimentation to foster skills and interest in Science

Standardized Assessments This Year• MAP • Taken by students on computers
– 3 tests given in October, January, and May
• Dibels • Taken by students in primary grades K-2
– Tests fluency rate, segmenting of words, recognition of letter sounds, and nonsense word fluency
– Given in September, January, and May
• DRA• Leveled reading test given in grades 1 through 5
– Tests fluency rate and comprehension– Given in October, February and May
