Mayors message

The publication contains events and activities specially designed for seniors, both in Salisbury and beyond, plus a number of feature articles. We welcome your feedback on the new format and also ideas for articles you would like to see in future editions.

Presented by the Community Health & Wellbeing division of the City of Salisbury, Salisbury Seniors is about ensuring some of our most important and high

valued residents, our seniors, are given access to a range of services and programs that can assist in adding to their lives.

We hope that the program of events will entice you to learn something new, further develop your skills, provide the opportunity to meet like-minded people, get fit or maybe fitter, and share an outing with old or new friends.

I would encourage all of our senior residents to participate in some of the activities. Hopefully there is something for everyone to enjoy, it’s a great way to get out of the house to meet people or socialise with friends.

Gillian Aldridge JP Mayor of Salisbury

Did you know that volunteering was identified as the second greatest source of joy – the first was dancing!

A study done by Argyle in 1996 found being happy plays an important role in health and many people find happiness in volunteering.

So now its official – helping the community helps you. This is not surprising research, ask any volunteer and they will tell you they get to meet new people, strengthen ties in their community, broaden their support network and meet people with common interests. This social connection and feeling of being valued generates a great sense of happiness.

But what about the health benefits of volunteering? Over the past two decades there has been a growing body of research that indicates volunteering provides individual health benefits in addition to social ones.

In a report titled The Health Benefits of Volunteering: A Review of Recent Research it states ‘those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability and lower rates of depression later in life than those who do not volunteer’. Additionally the health benefits of volunteering has shown that older volunteers are the most likely to receive greater benefits from volunteering.

So what are you waiting for? Take the first step to get happy and healthy by volunteering with your local Council.

… and in the next edition we’ll give you the top tips on volunteering with your grandchildren.

Michelle Hodshon Volunteer Development Officer [email protected]

Alma recalled playing for hours on the footpath making complex patterns with flowers, dirt and stones. ‘We had all these flowers, picked flowers, dirt and little stones. We’d make pictures on the kerb. The best one would be King Fin for the day! You’d be doing this for hours’.

Michael’s eyes lit up when he recalled his love of playing marbles. ‘You were rich if you had a glass marble. These were round ball like things made of coloured glass. If you weren’t rich you had to rely on clay marbles which didn’t roll properly. They broke if you dropped them. Marbles would be currency. You’d offer a larger one for 3-4 smaller ones. You might swap for something like a pie’.

Play through the Generations is the theme of this year’s Senior’s exhibition in the John Harvey Gallery. This exhibition brings together a collection of photographs and stories (picture-board and video) that will take you on a journey of people’s favourite games and popular places to play.

The exhibition commences on Tuesday 7th October and will run throughout the month of October.

For further information about the exhibition and exhibition opening times please call Robyn Mercierre on 8406 8312 or pick up an exhibition flyer from the John Harvey Gallery, Salisbury Community Centres, local libraries and/or The Jack Young and Para Hills Centres.

Remember when…Do you remember the games you played with siblings and the ‘kids next door’? Members of the Para Hills Seniors group certainly have some fond and vivid memories.
