Brissago&Roncos/AsconaThe Riviera del Gambarogno is a world of itsown.OntheleftsideoftheLakeMaggiore–fromContone to the Swiss-Italian border – natureunveils a wealth of treasures: just look at theglisteningLakeMaggiore,thecharminghillsandenjoythesightofthemostfascinatingmountains.The entire Riviera and the incomparable Bolledi Magadino are known for their rich culturalheritageandculinarytreats.ThosewhoappreciateprestigiousculturaleventsshouldnothesitatetomakeareservationfortheInternational Organ Music Festival in Magadino(everyJuly).
Brissago is a small village on the Italian borderperched between the shores of LakeMaggioreandthesteepmountainsbehind.Brissago is famousnotonly for its tobaccoandcigarfactory,butalsoforitsislands,whichseenfromabovelooklikebrightgreenspotsintheblueofthelake.TheIsolediBrissagoareeasytoreachbyboat,(have the mildest climate in Switzerland) andcan be best admired from Ronco s/Ascona, alittlevillagecaressedbythesun,situatedontheslopesofthemountainandcharacterizedbythechurch of San Martino, which dominates thesurroundingcountryside.

TheValleOnsernoneisoneofthemostimpressiveandmysteriousvalleysinTicino.Characteristicarethe thick forests, spectacular gorges and whitewater; this rather isolated place can be reachedbyawindingroad.Alongthisroad,whichleadsuptothevillageSpruga,therearesomefantasticvil-lages,builtonsunnyterracesinatraditionalarchi-tecturalstyle.Numerous internationallyrenownedwritersandartistsupuntiltodayfindthisvalleytheidealplaceforinspiration,thankstotheextraordi-naryanduptothisdayintactnaturalandhumansurroundings.
The Centovalli is named the “hundred valleys”becauseof thecountlesssidevalleys leavingthemainvalleytotheleftandright.It isanimportanttransitroutetoandfromItaly. The Camellia Park of Locarno is a small jew-el surrounded by populars, oaks and preciousforesttrees.TheParkisahomagetothecamel-lia, symbol of the premature and spectacularspring of Locarno. You can observe 900 differ-entvarietiesofcamellias,ofwhichover770areclassified. The best time for a visit is betweenMarch and April, when many camellias bloom.Several plants also bloom from late autumn andinwinter:thesearethelessknown,suchastheSasanqua variety,whichdeserve tobedis-coveredandappreciated.
The Isole di Brissago, the official botanical gar-denofTicino,give thevisitor theopportunity toescapefromthenoiseandfranticrhythmofmod-ern life. It’s a real oasis of peace in themiddleof LakeMaggiore. The exotic plants, the colorsand perfumes contribute to the visitor’s well-being.Thankstoitsparticularlymildclimate,thebotanicalgardenoffersmorethan1500speciesofsubtropicalflowers,plantsandtreesfromthe Mediterranean region, subtropical Asia, South Africa,AmericaandAustralia.

GreenteaplantationofMonteVerità
GambarognoBotanicalParkSituated in a wooded park created at the end of the 19th century, the green tea plantation ofMonteVerità inAscona ismadeupof about a thousand Camellia sinensis. Its leaf is used asrawmaterialfirstforgreenteaandthenforblacktea.TheparkiscompletedbyaZengarden,ateapathandbythe“Loreley”teahouse,inauguratedin 2006, with its annexed exhibition laboratory. Attheteahouseonecanfollowtheteaceremo-ny,whichalsoincludesaspecificintroductionto thecultureoftea,atouroftheZengarden,oftheplantation,andavisittothelaboratory.
This magnificent botanic garden is situatedat the Gambarogno-side of Lake Maggiore,on a plain in the hills between Piazzogna andVairano. In this place, Otto Eisenhut, a patientand talented plant breeder of plants and treeshas cultivated thousands of beautyful coloredflowering plants, like 950 types of camellias,350 different magnolias, azaleas, peonies andRhododendrononasurfaceofmorethan17000sq. m. Additionally Ivy, pine trees, juniper andother rareEuropeanandexoticconiferoustreesgrowinthepark.Visitorsneedonehour for the visit of thispark,connoisseursprobablysomewhatlonger.

Isole BorromeeThisspecialroundtripstartsinLocarnothentakesyoubyboatdownthelaketothemagicalatmos-phere of the Isole Borromeo and the beautifullakeshoretownofStresa.FromDomodossolaonereturns to Locarno on the romantic Centovallinatrain,whichpassesthroughthedelightfulsceneryoftheCentovallivalley.Thetourcanalsobedoneintheoppositedirection.
The IsolaBella lies in frontof the lakeshoretownStresa and is the best known of the three Bor-romeo islands. Count Carlo III Borromeo had apalacethereandamagnificentgardenbuiltforhiswifeIsabella.AfterthevisitofthePalazzo,apleas-antwalkleadstothegardens,whichareaclassicexampleofan“ItalianGarden”ofthe1600’s.IsolaMadre is the largest islandof the threeandisknownforitsbotanicalgardenfullofrareplantsandexoticflowers.Peacocks,parrotsandallkindsofpheasantlivefreelyinthegardenandthuscre-atetheimpressionofatropicalparadise.OntheIsoladeiPescatori(the“FishermenIsland”)youwillhavethechancetoadmirethepicturesquevillageinhabitedbyasmallcommunitystilldevotedtofishing.

ExcursiontoRasaandMonteCominoBoscoGurintheonly“Germanspeaking”villageofTicino isoneofSwitzerland’smostcharmingvillages.Situatedon1503metersabovesealevel,it is the highestmountain village in Ticino. Fromthevalleybottom, inthegracefulvillageofVerdasio in theCentovalli, two small cablewaysdepart fromboth valley sides:one toRasaandthesecondonetoMonteComino.Rasa is a wonderful village situated on amag-nificent natural terrace and surrounded by vastpastures and thick woods: a real jewel! The “Villa Emden”, set in a magnificent botanical gar-den, host a small meeting centre, managed by the Isola Grande SA. As soon as the last visitors leave the park around 6 p.m., the Island turns into a quiet and exclusive private property. On the 3rd floor of the “Villa” there are 10 rooms at your disposal. The rooms as single or double accommodation. Wireless internet access is also available. Further it is possible to use 3 meeting rooms: one with a seating capac-ity for 12 persons, one for 25 persons (both with a private terrace) and the 3rd one, offers a capacity for 45 persons.

In 1971 no permanent theatre existed in the Ticino. For Dimitri and his wife Gunda this was a challenge and they decided to establish their own theatre in the centre of Verscio. The Teatro Dimitri became the meeting-place where Clown Dimitri and his fellow artists, actors, musicians, dancers and jug-glers were able to present their shows. A buvette was attached to the theatre, and whether you just called in for a drink or maybe for a chat with an art-ist after his show, it became a stock exchange of ideas for patrons and artists alike.
