In my last bulletin column, among other things, I wrote about openness to being changed by our life of faith. Back in the midst of Lent, I wrote about being transformed or changed through the process of conversion: metanoia (μετάνοια), as our Greek ancestors in faith would

have named it. In the last column I reflected on the power of any given moment to change us, and in the March column I wrote about conversion as we are transformed through the Eucharist (i.e., becoming what we consume). Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, spoke about being transformed by the Eucharist in his Sunday Angelus address two weeks ago. Even though I originally wanted to write about today's Gospel message of realizing that what makes us sinful (impure) are the things that come from within -- as Jesus says, "...but the things that come out from within are what defile. From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile.” (Mark 7: 21 - 23) After thinking about it, I decided the message of transformation which the Holy Father preached might do just as well, since transformation must take place within us and would certainly cleanse us of sin in the process. Pope Francis said, "It is the Eucharist where Jesus leaves us a precise purpose: that we can become one with Him. In fact, he says: "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him," (John 6:56). To remain: Jesus in us and us in Him. Communion is assimilation: eating Him, we become Him. But this requires our "yes," our adherence to the faith." He continued, saying, "At times, during the Holy Mass, we may happen to feel this objection: 'What is the purpose of the Mass? I go to Church when I feel like it, and I pray better alone.' But the Eucharist is not a private prayer or a beautiful spiritual experience, it is not a simple commemoration of what Jesus has done in the Last Supper: we say, to understand well, that the Eucharist is a "memorial", that is, an act that actualizes and makes present the event of the death and resurrection of Jesus: the bread is truly His Body given to us; the wine is truly His Blood that has been shed "The Eucharist is Jesus who gives Himself entirely to us. By nourishing ourselves from Him and remaining in Him through the Eucharistic Communion, if we do it with faith, it transforms our life; it transforms it into a gift to God and a gift to our brothers and sisters. To nourish ourselves from that "bread of life" means being in tune with the heart of Christ, to assimilate His choices, His thoughts, His behavior. It means entering into a dynamic of sacrificial love and become a person of peace, of forgiveness, of reconciliation, of sharing in solidarity. It is the same as Jesus has done." "Jesus concludes his discourse with these words; "Whoever eats this bread will live forever" (Jn. 6,58). Yes, living in a concrete, real communion with Jesus on this earth makes us pass from death to life. The heavens begin precisely in this communion with Jesus." (Pope Francis, Angelus Address, August 16, 2015) Is there a greater transformation than that of passing from death to life?

SCHOOL NEWS

St. Peter's School 2015-2016

Our Dear Franciscan Sisters During these past few months as Sister Bernard Marie

and Sister Paula have prepared to leave St. Peter's, so many of us feel sadness and, at the same time, deep gratitude for

their presence and the presence of all the Franciscan Sisters through the years. They have been alongside us in worship, the sacraments, academics, sports, the arts and in service to

the community and it is impossible to estimate the number of lives they have touched.

Sister Bernie and Sister Paula, we love you and we pray that you will be happy and healthy—and very busy as is your

nature—at Our Lady of Angels in Joliet.

Can you help our children’s VBS pro-gram for next year? St. Peter ’s is looking for clean, used formula containers for Vaca-tion Bible School in 2016. They are the plastic containers with the attached lids, such as seen in the picture here. The size or brand does not matter. If you have any of

these containers and would like to donate them, please drop them off at the parish office for Elizabeth Wurm.

It is only six months until the annual

March for Life in Washington!

Are you interested in joining us this year? This year's March will leave on Thursday, January 21st at approximately 10 p.m. and will arrive in Washington for the march on Fri-day. Saturday, there will be some sightseeing in Washington with a plan for returning home either late Saturday night or after Mass on Sunday morning. More details on price will be available soon, and right now we are trying to see who is interested! If you have any interest in taking part in March, please contact Elizabeth Wurm at the parish office or at [email protected].

The youth ministry program is currently in need of empty and clean baby food con-tainers. We are looking for the 2nd food size jars with their lids. If you have any that you are able to donate, please contact Elizabeth

Wurm at [email protected] or simply drop off the clean jars & lids at the Parish Center office. Thank you!

September 11, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. is the first meeting of the St. Peter’s Respect Life Committee in the St. Peter Room. (4th floor of the Parish Center.) This will kick off our new year of programs and special bulletin announcements. New members are always welcome to attend. This is the 14th year for the SPRLC to promote the ideal of Respecting all life from conception to natural death. If you have any questions, please contact Barb at 419-747-3178.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Are you, or is there someone you know who is interested in becoming Catholic? Is the Spirit prompting you to ask these and other questions: Who is God? How is God active in my life? What do Catholics believe?” We will soon begin RCIA

sessions. Please pray for all seekers, encourage anyone you know who has expressed interest in the Catholic faith and call Lynne at the Parish Center (419-524-2572) to schedule an ini-tial conversation.

Prison Ministry Update

Please keep in prayer our brothers at Richland Correctional (RiCI). They are eagerly awaiting celebrating Mass with Bish-op Thomas on his first visit this Saturday. FATHER JEREMY OUT FOR A JOYRIDE IN TED FOX’S CAR!

FROM TWO GRATEFUL SISTERS

From the moment we walked into the Church at 11:20am until we picked up the last envelope from the gym in the Franciscan Activity Center, we were overwhelmed!

Thank you seems so inadequate to convey the deep gratitude that we feel for the great people of St. Peter’s. Sunday’s festivities were made possible because of so many people beginning with Fr. Hite and Fr. Jeremy. Thank you, Mr. Johnson, the choir and musicians! We would need the entire bulletin to list the many people who contributed to the wonderful celebration. Those who prepared the gym, provided the delicious food, the speakers, the clean-up crew, and many more - including our new De-velopment Director, Jason Crundwell, who coordinated things. We thank you in the name of the 400 plus Sisters of St. Francis who had the privilege of ministering to the great people of St. Peter’s. THANK YOU! ~ Sister Bernard Marie & Sister Paula

Thank you to all who turned in baby bottles to benefit Richland Pregnancy Services. St. Peter ’s total was $607.65. If you should have one still at home, it can still be turned in. We are blessed to have a crisis pregnancy center in our area. ~ St. Peter’s Respect Life Chapter

Capital Campaign Moving Forward

In late July, Bishop Thomas approved the implementation of a Capital Campaign at St. Peter’s Parish. The Development Office has been working closely with our Properties Committee to obtain updated quotes for the projects we hope to complete. Our goal is to raise $3 million. However, we will only complete projects as we receive the funding needed. Based on the feed-back of parishioners in the feasibility study phase, our work will focus on the needs of the church and campus security first. Over the next couple of months, you will hear much about the campaign and the projects we hope to complete. Since this is a complete as funded project, you will most likely not see work begin until the year 2017 or later. Also, keep in mind that each of these projects will require Diocesan approval from multiple committees before work can commence. We are committed to having work completed by professionals who are proficient in historic worship spaces like St. Peter’s Church. Please keep the success of this campaign in your prayers as we move forward.

The first meeting will be Friday, September 18, 2015 at 7:30 a.m. and every third Friday of the month in the Atrium of the Franciscan Activi-ty Center. Additional information will be released in the coming weeks regarding guest speakers. Feel free to call Jason Crundwell with any questions. 419-524-2572.

TRADITION Tradition is long human memory set, not in stone, but in human interaction. Without this active memory, the bonds of relationship and affection fray and fall apart. Communities dissolve as surely as neglected buildings do. After participating in events, celebrations, and even small rituals, we remark about how good it is to gather and remember. Today’s readings remind us of foundations laid deeper than the human will to relate. Today we hear about God’s will to relate to us—to be our God as we are called to be God’s own beloved people. Today in three readings and three ways we remember the covenant bonds that create us as a people and the obligation and responsibility that express the innermost attitude of soul. You are mine. I am yours. These are God’s words that created a people as surely as “Let there be light” created the sun and moon and all the stars. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week’s discussion of the permanent diaconate and its restoration will lead inevitably to questions about “deaconesses,” something certainly under study as historians and liturgists research our tradition’s treasures. Today, there are some settings in which women are entrusted with pastoral administration and have been called to preach and to officiate at weddings. Lay people can lead the funeral rites and daily prayer. Yet the question of ordination to the diaconate for women is complex. Yes, we have had dea-conesses in our tradition. We know that they assisted with the baptism of women, and that ministries were entrusted to them. We also know that some early church councils took care to call them lay persons, and specifically forbade ordination. What confuses the picture is that they may have been the wives of deacons, who, like the wives of priests and bishops, were expected to serve the com-munity as exemplars of the Christian life. Long after deaconesses disappeared, their ministry was treasured and carried on by reli-gious women in consecrated life. It is clear that one of our greatest treasures is the vibrant engagement of women in ministry over the centuries. What is not as clear is where our questions will lead. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Moses directs the people to observe the commandments of the Lord (Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8). Psalm — The one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord (Psalm 15). Second Reading — Welcome the word that you have received and become doers of the word, not hearers only (James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27). Gospel — You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition (Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lec-tionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commis-sion on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: In today’s Gospel, Jesus warns “what comes from within can defile” a person. Fami-lies need to worry about “outside influences” but also about “inside influences.” The values our children carry for a lifetime are learned at home. “Habits of the hearth” are the most powerful influences on a child. That’s the good news! That can also be the bad news.

100 Years Ago in Septem-ber! As many already know, construction on the present St. Peter's Church began in the Spring of 1911. Four years later, on September 12, 1915, the first Mass was celebrated in the new

building, in the church basement, as construction continued on the rest of the Church. The formal dedication of the Church took place just two years later on September 16, 1917. We owe a debt of gratitude to our ancestors in faith in Mansfield as they sacrificed and labored to build a fitting place of worship here. We also owe a debt of gratitude to Sister Paula Bingert, who has maintained the archives here and who has worked tirelessly to help us remain mindful of our wonderful heritage!

(...Continued from page 2.)

The time to choose to say 'yes' is now. In every moment we can consent to the work of God in our hearts. Every time we come together for Eucharist we can be transformed if we will but allow it to happen. As the Pope concluded, "In Heaven, Mary our Mother awaits us...May she obtain for us the grace of nourishing ourselves always with faith in Jesus, the Bread of Life." (Ibid.) And let the Church say, "Amen!"
