St. Nick’s is a welcoming community in the Catholic Tradition, enriched by

many cultures, rooted in God’s Word and the Eucharist,

offering loving service. Advent Reconciliation Monday

On Monday, December 19, 2016, our Diocese will join the Archdiocese of New York in celebrating Advent Reconciliation Monday. On this special day, all the parishes of our dioceses will offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, in preparation for the great Feast of the Lord’s Nativity.

Reconciliation Monday has been a great success in our Diocese over the past few years. The feedback received from the parishes, priests and faithful confirm what a truly positive and renewing experience it has been for all involved. This Advent over 500 churches in New York City and the upper counties will be simultaneously offering the sacrament – a powerful invitation to those Catholics who may be away from the sacrament for a period of time, to be drawn back to this encounter with God’s reconciling love.

Here at St. Nick’s we have confessions from Monday through Saturday: 11:45AM-12:00 Noon in the chapel, and on Saturday: 4:00PM – 4:45PM in the Church. And anytime by appointment.

ST. NICK’S 100th ANNIVERSARY

In 1916, plans were made to start a parish in the area of the Queensboro Hospital for Communicable Diseases, which is the location of Queens General Medical Center. Property was purchased in January of 1917 and a church was built on the corner of Parsons Blvd. and Union Turnpike by October of that same year. The area and the parish have developed into a diversified community with people of many different languages and cultures. This is St. Nick’s today! In order to celebrate our 100th Anniversary as a parish community, a different event has been planned each month to bring us together to celebrate, to pray and to work.

December 18, 2016: Lessons and Carols in Church (starting at 3:00pm). Also in December, Vespers on the Four Sundays of Advent. May 20, 2017: Spring Concert with all choirs, time 7:00 pm in Church (the Music Director will coordinate re-hearsal schedule at a later date). June 25, 2017: Parish Picnic, Cunningham Park (time TBD). September 10, 2017: Feast of St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Church and Tolentine Hall, 12:15pm. We ask all parishioners to come forward and get involved in some of these programs wherever you feel most comfortable. Contact the rectory office to let us know of your interest and availability in various activities.

From the Pastor’s Desk….

There is something that the three readings have in common this Sunday. They all speak of a birth of a

child. In the first reading prophet Isaiah says, “Behold the Virgin will conceive and will give birth to a

son and he shall be called Emmanuel, God-with-us”. St. Paul reminds us in the second reading “Jesus

Christ … was born from the line of David according to the flesh”; and in the Gospel of Matthew he an-

nounces “This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about …”

In the first reading, God gave us the greatest and most definitive signs about the Messiah: “A maiden is

with child, and will soon give birth to a son whom she will call Emmanuel, which means God is with

us!” It is important to note that this sign was given to king Ahaz only after he humbled himself by

refusing to put God to test.

In the second reading, St. Paul reminds us of the promises that came through the words of the prophets.

Here, he highlighted two very important facts. First, he reminds us of Christ’s divine origin: “This is the

good news about Christ, the son of God.” Second, he reminds us of Christ’s human origin and

nature: “…Who according to the human nature he took was from the descendant of David…” All these

were to assure us that Christ is really the promised Messiah.

In today’s Gospel St. Matthew (1:23) says, “Emmanuel” - “God is with us.” is coming to deliver us from

sin, darkness and death. Emmanuel is both a prayer and plea (on our behalf) and a promise and

declaration on God’s part. When we pronounce the word, we are really praying and pleading: “God, be

with us!” And when God speaks it, the almighty, Creator of the world is telling us: “I am with you”.

The Gospel of Mathew also highlights the very important role played by Mary and Joseph. They are

God’s instruments for fulfilling His mission of salvation for us. This teaches us that God is active in our

history and lives, and that He comes to us through human instruments. Like Mary and Joseph we too are

called to allow ourselves to be instruments through which God could save humanity.

A blessed Christmas to you and all your loved ones! May God grant us peace!

Fr. John Francis
