THE ETERNAL GOD King David wished that the ark of God might have a more

permanent home. David may have envisioned something like the

cedar palace where he resided. God had in mind something more:

a throne where David’s descendants would rule for ever, a

kingdom where Jews and Gentiles alike would be welcome.

Mary’s prayerful nature led to an even more disturbing

message. She would conceive and bear a Son though she was not

yet married. “How can this come about?” Mary wondered. “The

Holy Spirit will come upon you,” she was told (Luke 1:35).

Mary’s acceptance of this difficult challenge ushered in this, the

final age of God’s reign. What was once a secret known only by

chosen people like King David and his descendants must now be

made clear to all so that, as Saint Paul wrote to the Romans, we

can be brought to the “obedience of faith” “according to the

command of the eternal God” (Romans 16:26).

EL DIOS ETERNO El rey David deseaba que el Arca de Dios tuviera un hogar más permanente. David podría haberse imaginado algo así como el palacio de cedro donde residía. Dios tenía en mente algo más: un trono donde los descendientes de David gobernarían para siempre, un reino donde judíos y gentiles serían bien recibidos por igual. La actitud devota de María llevó a un mensaje aún más inquietante. Concebiría y daría a luz un hijo a pesar de que aún no estaba casada. “¿Cómo podrá ser esto?”, preguntó María. “El Espíritu Santo descenderá sobre ti”, le contestó el Ángel (Lucas 1:35). La aceptación de María de este difícil desafío marcó el comienzo de esta, la era final del Reino de Dios. Lo que antes era un secreto conocido solo por el pueblo elegido como el Rey David y sus descendientes ahora debe quedar claro a todos para que, como escribió San Pablo a los romanos, podamos llegar a la “obediencia de la fe”, “en cumplimiento del designio eterno de Dios” (Romanos 16:26).

POPE FRANCIS - PAPA FRANCISCO Today, the Fourth and last Sunday of Advent, the Liturgy wants to prepare us for Christmas, now at the door, by inviting us to meditate on the An-gel’s Annunciation to Mary. The Archangel Gabriel reveals to the Virgin the Lord’s will that she become the mother of his Only-Begotten Son: “you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High” (Lk 1:31-32). Let us fix our gaze on this simple girl from Nazareth, at the moment she offers herself to the divine message with her “yes”; let us grasp two essential aspects of her attitude, which is for us the model of how to prepare for Christmas. First of all her faith, her attitude of faith, which consists in listening to the Word of God in order to abandon herself to this Word with full willingness of mind and heart. Responding to the Angel, Mary said: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (v. 38). In her “behold” filled with faith, Mary does not know by what road she must venture, what pains she must suffer, what risks she must face. But she is aware that it is the Lord asking and she entrusts herself totally to Him; she abandons herself to his love. This is the faith of Mary! Another aspect is the capacity of the Mother of Christ to recognize God’s time. Mary is the one who made possible the Incarnation of the Son of God, “the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret for long ages” (Rom 16:25). She made possible the Incarnation of the Word thanks to her humble and brave “yes”. Mary teaches us to seize the right moment when Jesus comes into our life and asks for a ready and generous answer. And Jesus is coming. Indeed, the mystery of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem took place historically more than 2,000 years ago but occurs as a spiritual event in the “today” of the Liturgy. The Word, who found a home in the virgin womb of Mary, comes in the celebration of Christmas to knock once again at the heart of every Christian. He comes and knocks. Each of us is called to respond, like Mary, with a personal and sincere “yes”, placing oneself fully at the disposal of God and of his mercy, of his love. How many times Jesus comes into our lives, and how many times he sends us an angel, and how many times we don’t notice because we are so taken, immersed in our own thoughts, in our own affairs and even, in these days, in our Christmas preparations, so as not to notice Him who comes and knocks at the door of our hearts, asking for acceptance, asking for a “yes” like Mary’s. A saint used to say: “I am afraid that the Lord will come”. Do you know what the fear was? It was the fear of not noticing and letting Him pass by. When we feel in our hearts: “I would like to be a better man, a better woman…. I regret what I have done…”. That is the Lord knocking. He makes you feel this: the will to be better, the will to be closer to others, to God. If you feel this, stop. That is the Lord! And go to prayer, and maybe to confession, cleanse yourselves… this will be good. But keep well in mind: if you feel this longing to be better, He is knocking: don’t let Him pass by!

Hoy, cuarto y último domingo de Adviento, la liturgia quiere prepararnos para la Navidad que ya está a la puerta invitándonos a meditar el relato del anuncio del Ángel a María. El arcángel Gabriel revela a la Virgen la voluntad del Señor de que ella se convierta en la madre de su Hijo unigénito: «Concebirás en tu vientre y darás a luz un hijo, y le pondrás por nombre Jesús. Será grande, se llama-rá Hijo del Altísimo» (Lc1, 31-32). Fijemos la mira-da en esta sencilla joven de Nazaret, en el momen-to en que acoge con docilidad el mensaje divino con su «sí»; captemos dos aspectos esenciales de su actitud, que es para nosotros modelo de cómo prepararnos para la Navidad. Ante todo su fe, su actitud de fe, que consiste en escuchar la Palabra de Dios para abandonarse a esta Palabra con plena disponibilidad de mente y de corazón. Al responder al Ángel, María dijo: «He aquí la esclava del Señor; hágase en mí según tu palabra» (v. 38). En su «heme aquí» lleno de fe, María no sabe por cuales caminos tendrá que arriesgarse, qué dolores tendrá que sufrir, qué riesgos afrontar. Pero es consciente de que es el Señor quien se lo pide y ella se fía totalmente de Él, se abandona a su amor. Esta es la fe de María. Otro aspecto es la capacidad de la Madre de Cristo de reconocer el tiempo de Dios. María es aquella que hizo posible la encarnación del Hijo de Dios, «la revelación del misterio mantenido en secreto durante siglos eternos» (Rm16, 25). Hizo posible la encarnación del Verbo gracias precisa-mente a su «sí» humilde y valiente. María nos enseña a captar el momento favorable en el que Jesús pasa por nuestra vida y pide una respuesta disponible y generosa. Y Jesús pasa. En efecto, el misterio del nacimiento de Jesús en Belén, que tuvo lugar históricamente hace más de dos mil años, se realiza, como acontecimiento espiritual, en el «hoy» de la Liturgia. El Verbo, que encontró una morada en el seno virginal de María, en la celebración de la Navidad viene a llamar nueva-mente al corazón de cada cristiano: pasa y llama. Cada uno de nosotros está llamado a responder, como María, con un «sí» personal y sincero, poniéndose plenamente a disposición de Dios y de su misericordia, de su amor. Cuántas veces pasa Jesús por nuestra vida y cuántas veces nos envía un ángel, y cuántas veces no nos damos cuenta, porque estamos muy ocupados, inmersos en nuestros pensamientos, en nuestros asuntos y, concretamente, en estos días, en nuestros prepa-rativos de la Navidad, que no nos damos cuenta que Él pasa y llama a la puerta de nuestro cora-zón, pidiendo acogida, pidiendo un «sí», como el de María. Un santo decía: «Temo que el Señor pase». ¿Sabéis por qué temía? Temor de no darse cuenta y dejarlo pasar. Cuando nosotros sentimos en nuestro corazón: «Quisiera ser más bueno, más buena... Estoy arrepentido de esto que hice...». Es precisamente el Señor quien llama. Te hace sentir esto: las ganas de ser mejor, las ganas de estar más cerca de los demás, de Dios. Si tú sientes esto, detente. ¡El Señor está allí! Y vas a rezar, y tal vez a la confesión, a hacer un poco de limpieza...: esto hace bien. Pero recuérdalo bien: si sientes esas ganas de mejorar, es Él quien llama: ¡no lo dejes marchar!

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Activities Report for 2020 Informe de Actividades de la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul para 2020

Despite a tumultuous year with our economy devastated by Covid-19, our SVDP Conference of St. Michael the Archangel praises God for our charitable accomplishments this year. Heartfelt appreciation to our membership, parishioners and our benefactors for generously supporting the following activities:

• Through Home Visitation and Food Pantry, we have positively impacted 4,157 lives in our community. • 2,790 food bags, valued at $83,700 • 90 Christmas Gift Bags to the elderly. • 75 filled backpacks to Scott Johnson Middle School. • Numerous Food Pantry Deliveries to the homebound and ill during this unprecedented Covid year. • Through a private donation, six families in need received a complete Thanksgiving dinner. • 72 Christmas Gift Cards given to children in need. This effort is ongoing as our parishioners continue their generous

donations of gift cards (placed in collection baskets or in mailbox in church office). With great humility and appreciation it is a privilege to have been able to serve the Lord this year. God is love.

We would like to take a moment to thank all of you who have responded to our recent on-line collection drive. Regardless of whether you chose to help us via Faith Direct or by using our traditional envelopes we truly appreciate your generous response. We also want to assure everyone who had previously enrolled in Faith Direct that nothing has changed and your existing contribution schedule remains intact.
