May the peace of Christ be with you,
Thank you to all the staff and parishioners who
helped with the Unbound: Freedom in Christ
conference this past weekend. Many people who
attended have received significant spiritual healing
from the Lord, and a deeper awareness of how much
God the Father loves them. We have established
prayer teams in our diocese who are available to
pray with anyone who would like to experience
greater freedom in their lives from resentment,
unforgiveness, anger, fear, self-judgment,
hopelessness, etc. The gospel message of Jesus is: “I
have come that you may know the truth, and the
truth will set you free.” The truth means knowing
who we are in the eyes of God the Father and his
plan for our salvation and healing.
October is a month of celebrations of well-known
saints. It begins with the memorial of St. Therese of
the Child Jesus on October 1, followed by the
Guardian Angels on October 2. October 4 is the
memorial of St. Francis of Assisi. October 9 is the
memorial of St. Denis, the first bishop of Paris,
France, whose relics were saved in the great fire that
burned at Notre Dame Church recently. St. Pope
John XXIII is commemorated on October 11 and St.
Teresa of Avila on October 15. October 16 is the
memorial of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque who had
the visions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and brought
to us the first Friday devotions. October 17 is the
memorial of St. Ignatius of Antioch, followed by the
feast of St. Luke on the 18th
, and the North American
Martyrs on the 19th
. St. Pope John Paul II has a
memorial on October 22, followed by St. John of
Capistrano on the 23rd
. The month ends with the
Feast of the Apostles Simon and Jude on October 28.
In the discussion on the Seventh Commandment, we
come to the sins against the commandment that
involve a lack of respect for the goods of others.
Theft is taking the property of another against the
reasonable will of the owner. “There is no theft if
consent can be presumed or if refusal is contrary to
reason and the universal destination of goods,” for
example if someone is starving to death and the only
way to obtain food is by taking it. Any form of
unjust taking and keeping the property of others is
against the seventh commandment, including
“deliberate retention of goods lent or of objects lost,
business fraud, paying unjust wages, forcing up
prices by taking advantage of the ignorance or
hardship of another.” Also morally wrong are
corruption or bribery, taking for personal use the
common goods of a business, such as paper or office
supplies, work poorly done, tax evasion, forgery of
checks and invoices, excessive expense and waste.
Willfully damaging private or public property is
contrary to the moral law and requires reparation
(Catechism of the Catholic Church #2408-2409).
In next Sunday’s gospel, Luke 17:11-19, Jesus heals
ten people afflicted with leprosy. While they are on
the way to the priests to show them their condition,
they realize that they have been healed. Only one of
the ten, a Samaritan, comes back to thank Jesus for
the healing. Jesus says to him, “Stand up and go;
your faith has saved you.” There are many times
where we ask something from God in prayer, but do
we say a prayer of thanksgiving just as often when
our prayers are answered? The word salvation comes
from the Latin word meaning healing or being made
whole. The desire of Jesus is for our salvation or the
complete healing of our souls and bodies, including
restoration of the relationships that have been lost.
Resurrection is the ultimate healing which includes
bodily healing, emotional healing, intellectual or
psychological healing, healing of relationships with
others, and spiritual healing. We pray for this grace
for ourselves and our family members and
parishioners.
God Bless you,
Fr. Andrew Beerman
