2018 Diocesan Services Appeal - St. Lucie Parish Goal: $207,000

Our 2018 parish goal of $207,000 is only attainable with the support of the entire parish working together! Many of you received a letter and DSA offertory envelope from

Bishop Barbarito asking for your support in this year’s campaign. Additional envelopes are available in the back of the church.

TO DATE, we have $192,906 contributed in payment or pledge toward the parish total of $207,000. This represents 837 families from St. Lucie Parish.

NEW SECURITY MEASURES

At the suggestion of the diocese all the parishes of the diocese have been asked to review security measures around their churches. We have been recognized as being pro-active by having a sheriff’s deputy on the property for six hours on Sunday mornings. The reason we do not have one on Saturday afternoons and Sunday afternoons is that there is a four-hour minimum. One measure the parishes have been asked to consider is to lock the side doors of the churches at the beginning of every weekend liturgy and ask late-comers to enter through the main doors. This way late-comers can be monitored more closely. Most side doors are behind the congregation as our doors are. Beginning the weekend of August 4TH & 5TH we will start locking the doors. Signs will be put on those doors inviting late-comers to join us using the rotunda doors. If someone knocks on the side doors they are not to be opened. Since all our doors have crash bars, you can always exit through those doors in an emergency or at the end of mass, but please make sure the doors close completely so they lock behind you. Other security measures are being considered, but we prefer not to announce them since that may make them less effective.

EUCHARISTIC INTENTION The bread and wine for Sunday, July 15th through July 21st, 2018 was donated in Thanksgiving to God for our Priests and Deacons by Carmen Silva and Carmen Escobar.

PARISH REMINDER

Those who wish to fill our “boxes of joy” for third-world girls in need should remember to purchase plastic ponchos and flip-flops to place in the collection box next weekend. Remember, we are asking for a few items every month until October.

NEXT WEEKEND COLLECTION FOR “BOX OF JOY”

The Council of Catholic Women and Youth Group, under direction of Cross Catholic outreach (crosscatholic.org/BOXOFJOY) combine their efforts to bring needed necessities to children in third-world countries during Christmas. In order to accomplish this, we need your help and will begin in July with items to fill a shoebox. The age group we are purchasing for are girls aged 10-14. In July we are asking for flip-flops and plastic foldable ponchos (like the kind sold in amusement parks). Next weekend, July 21st and 22nd, we will have a box in the narthex to collect your donations. August 18TH and 19TH, we will be collecting hair accessories, sunglasses and hair brushes. In September 15TH and 16TH, we ask for lip balm, tooth brush and toothpaste and “bar” soap (no liquids) and small packs of tissues. In October 20TH and 21ST, consider purchasing a jump rope, mini puzzles and small craft kits for girls. Keep in mind, they must fit in a shoe box!

FATHER MANNY VASCONCELOS IS RETURNING TO ST. LUCIE FOR A

WEEKEND!

Newly-ordained Father Manny Vasconcelos will spend the weekend of July 21 & 22 with us here at St. Lucie. He wants to celebrate mass for us and have an opportunity to thank everyone for their support and prayers. He is scheduled to preside at the 4:00

PM mass on Saturday, July 21st, the 11:30 AM mass and the 5:00 PM mass on July 22nd. After the 11:30 AM mass, at approximately 12:30 PM, on the 22nd, we will have an informal reception/gathering in the Fr. Hickey Center with some cake and cookies, and you will have a chance to see Fr. Manny and congratulate him. Parishioners who attend other masses are certainly invited to this gathering. He will not have time for individual blessings, but I have asked him to give a general first blessing at each mass he celebrates and one at the gathering. Individual blessings would take hours.

Welcome, Father Manny!

Ordained: June 22, 2018

The Indulgence The Portiuncula indulgence is the first plenary indulgence that was ever granted in the Church. There were indeed indulgences at all times, but they were only partial, and only a partial remission of the temporal punishments could be obtained by them. But, as already remarked, he who gains the Portiuncula indulgence is freed from all temporal punishments and becomes as pure as after holy baptism. This was also the reason why Pope Honorius was astonished when St. Francis petitioned for the confirmation of this indulgence, for such an indulgence, up to that time, had been entirely unknown. It was only after he had come to the conviction that Jesus Christ himself wished it, that he granted the petition of the saint and confirmed the indulgence.

August 2nd is the Feast of Portiuncula- A plenary indulgence is available to

anyone who will: 1. Receive sacramental confession (20 days before or after) 2. Receive the Holy Eucharist at Holy Mass on August 2nd 3. Enter a parish church and, with a contrite heart, pray the Our Father, Apostles Creed, and a prayer of his/her own choosing for the intentions of the Pope.

DID YOU KNOW… Did you know that we welcome (once-a-month) donations! Multiply your weekly donation to the Sundays in the month. This allows you to also have freedom from the collection most of the weekends of the month. And we have fewer checks to process through the bank which means fewer check fees for us! Donations may also be made on-line! ANNIVERSARY CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to James and Angelina DeMaio who celebrated their 58th Wedding Anniversary on July 9th, 2018. May Jesus, who was a guest at the wedding in Cana, bless them, their families and friends with good health, peace, and joy.

BAPTISM PLANNING A BAPTISM?

The information below is intended to give a summary explanation of the process to follow to have your child baptized at St. Lucie. The following is a general outline of the process for baptizing children younger than seven years old:

Age—The child must be younger than seven years old. If the child is seven years old or older he or she will have to attend classes in our Religious Education Program.

Parents—The parents of the child must be registered and practicing members of St. Lucie Church. Parents, not godparents, must ask to have their child baptized.

Sunday Mass Attendance—Parents must be

registered for at least four months and attend Sunday masses each week. We ask that parents use their offertory envelopes so as to provide a record of their mass attendance.

Baptismal Class—The process begins with the

parents of the child attending a baptismal preparation class. You may take the class before the baby is born. Our church offers these classes in English and Spanish. The English class is given on the second Wednesday of every month starting at 7:00 p.m. and the Spanish class is given on the first Wednesday of every month starting at 7:00 p.m. The class is given in the Parish Office. You must call a few days before the class to confirm the date and time and to pre-register. Only the parents of the child are required to attend. We do not require godparents to attend the class, but it is recommended.

Baptismal Preparation Booklet—Parents will be

given a Baptismal Preparation Booklet at the class. This booklet will be used as the primary means of preparation for the parents. The parents will have to fill out all the necessary information required in the booklet as well as provide all necessary documents. This is described in more detail in the booklet.

Setting a Date—When the booklet has been

completely filled out and all necessary documents have been obtained, parents may then bring the completed booklet along with the documents to the office. After the booklet and documents have been reviewed you will be contacted. A date for the Baptism will be set for at least one month after you have been contacted.

Stipend—The stipend for baptisms is $25.00 and

should be handed in with the booklet.

Baptismal Certificate— The Baptismal Certificate for your child will be given to you after the baptism or it will be mailed to you shortly after the baptism.

NEED A GODPARENT OR SPONSOR CERTIFICATE?

So many people approach us with requests for letters attesting that they fulfill the requirements to be a sponsor (godparents). Here is what is required by canon law:

Can.872 Insofar as possible, a person to be baptized is to be given a sponsor who assists an adult in Christian initiation or together with the parents presents an infant for baptism. A sponsor also helps the baptized person to lead a Christian life in keeping with baptism and to fulfill faithfully the obligations inherent in it. Can. 873 There is to be only one male sponsor or one female sponsor or one of each. Can. 874 §1. To be permitted to take on the function of sponsor a person must: 1) be designated by the one to be baptized, by the parents or the person who takes their place, or in their absence by the pastor or minister and have the aptitude and intention of fulfilling this function; 2) have completed the sixteenth year of age, unless the diocesan bishop has established another age, or the pastor or minister has granted an exception for a just cause; 3) be a Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist and who leads a life of faith in keeping with the function to be taken on; 4) not be bound by any canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared; 5) not be the father or mother of the one to be baptized. §2. A baptized person who belongs to a non-Catholic ecclesial community is not to participate except together with a Catholic sponsor and then only as a witness of the baptism.

It is implied in Canon 874 that a Catholic who is married is in a valid Catholic Marriage. Lastly, please do not argue, berate or insult any staff person here at St. Lucie concerning these requirements. We are obligated to follow Canon Law, and our office staff is just trying to help you understand these obligations.

Fr. Mark

MIRACLES HAPPEN EVERY DAY!

We have watched and waited, prayed and hoped, as the Thai soccer team of twelve boys and their 25-year-old coach were successfully rescued from a flooded cave in Thailand. The life or death ordeal began on June 23rd when the boys became trapped in a labyrinthine-flooded cave, several miles long. British divers miraculously found 12 boys aged 11 to 16 and their coach huddled on a muddy bank in a partly flooded chamber on July 2nd. Starvation, depleting oxygen, rising carbon dioxide levels and flooding waters were the immediate concerns. The world waited with hitched breath as more than two weeks passed in a rescue effort. Heartache came to closure on July 10th when the last of the victims was escorted to safety. This came at a heavy price with the death of one professional Thai rescuer losing his life when his personal oxygen supply was unexpectedly depleted. We can’t begin to fathom what these teens and their waiting families endured or how their futures might be branded by so much pain. We can’t imagine the courage, faith and talents of the rescuers. In all, our hearts are lightened by acknowledging the physical and mental stamina that these boys clung to. And we believe that God has heard a world in prayer and pleas to bring each boy home safely. The world came together when a situation appeared bleakest. Hundreds of hands of diving teams, strategic industrial experts, medical personal and families came together in support, hope and prayer – all bound by love. “Thank you, heavenly Father, for hearing us. Thank you for your mercy.” Annette DeLuca, bulletin editor.

An obstacle is something you see when you take your eyes off from God. (A. DeLuca)
