Saint Joseph’s University

Coming off of a 5-11 season that saw a majority of the seniorclass break into multiple career categories, including gamesplayed, goals, assists, and points, the Saint Joseph’s women’slacrosse team will look to combine veteran experience with rook-ie talent in the 2013 season. Although the Hawks lost seven of lastseason’s starters due to graduation, head coach Denise Roesslerbelieves in both the dedication and versatility of her 18 returnersand 10 newcomers.

“With a rigorous fall season behind us, I anticipate a strong, fit squad to compete this season,” said Roessler. “We are lookingfor contributions from all of our classes.”

ATTACK AND MIDFIELDThe trio of fifth-year senior Meghan McDevitt, junior Val

Paolucci, and 2012 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie selection Julia Falconewill look to bolster the offensive line.

Roessler expects the experienced McDevitt to lead the attackas the standout has started 48 of 51 games in her career on HawkHill. Last season, the IWLCA Division I Academic Team selectionranked third on the team in scoring with 23 points (13g, 10a) enroute to ranking fifth all-time in career assists (35).

Paolucci finished last season tied for second on the team ingoals with 24 and tied for the team lead in assists with 10. The jun-ior demonstrated her offensive power with two five-point gamesand will be expected to contribute again this season on the offen-sive end of the field.

After an all-star caliber rookie season in which she led allfreshmen in scoring with seven goals, Falcone returns for hersophomore campaign after being named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team.

The Hawks will look to 2012 All-Philly Third Team selectionAbby Ananian on both the attack and midfield this year. Last year, the junior led the team in draw controls en route to being ranked12th nationally in the category.

Senior Maggie Mauer and junior Michele Granger will alsoreturn to the midfield this season, accompanied by sophomoresMolly Curcio, Hannah Hutchins, Gianna Minutillo, and HalliePickard.

“They’ll look to bring a spark to the offensive end,” saidRoessler.

Newcomers Bianca Angstadt, Emily Bowers, and BonnieMcShane will add to the attack, while freshmen CourtneyEmanuele and Taylor Farrell will be expected to help in the mid-field.

DEFENSE AND GOALKEEPERCo-captains Alisha Aquilino and Brittany Hanrahan and sen-

ior Alexa Matthews will lead the defensive unit this season. In 16 starts last season, Aquilino made 109 saves and posted

a 11.13 goals against average on the season. The senior captainranks third all-time in career goals against average with an impres-sive 9.31.

Hanrahan caused seven turnovers and picked up an equalamount of ground balls in 2012. The junior captain has started

more than half of all games in her two-year career and will play avital role on the defensive end this season.

Matthews played in all 16 games last season, with 15 starts, while picking up 16 ground balls and causing nine turnovers.

Roessler has high expectations for juniors Allison Heath,Kaitlyn McSwiggan, and Meghan Watkin to play integral roles ondefense while seeking contributions from freshmen CarolineHagan, Kelly Phelan, Alicia Singley, and Mary Margaret Tonner.

In addition to Aquilino’s experience between the pipes, theHawks will also look to sophomore Nora McGeever and freshmanGenevieve Giblin. McGeever made three saves in three gameslast season, while Giblin is coming off of an impressively strong fallcampaign.

OVERALLOn the season as a whole, Roessler expects the team holds

great potential for success.“Based off of the fall season, I believe that this team has great

chemistry and a strong work ethic. With the addition of a strongand talented freshman class in every position, I anticipate signifi-cant contributions from all.”

Finnesey Field, currently in its 83rd year, has been home to 10different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s. Opened in 1929 as home tothe SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changesover the years and has been home to over a thousand SJU varsitygames, matches and track meets.

The most recent upgrade occurred in 2008 when the AstroTurf, laid down in 2001, was replaced with new, state-of-the-art TigerTurf.

Home to the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, men’s andwomen’s soccer teams, the field has seen other modifications sinceits inception in 1929. The prospect of a 70,000-seat bowled stadiumfor football was dashed when the sport was discontinued followingthe 1939 season.

Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Finnesey homeuntil 1959. Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer began in 1958 and playedevery season but one (1960) at Finnesey. In 1960, the original grand-stand, as well as the hillside seating near Overbrook Avenue, wereeliminated as Villiger (now Post) Hall and the Bluett Theatre werebuilt. In the process of the 1960 construction, the field’s elevationwas raised five feet to its current location.

In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey a truemulti-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered theuse of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next toMandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadi-um.

The women’s lacrosse squad is 60-83 in 19 seasons on Hawk Hill. The best season came in 2004 when the Hawks went 5-2 en route toan 8-6 campaign. The first game was played on March 23, 1993 when

SJU defeated Gwynedd Mercy, 18-4.The men’s lacrosse team has compiled an overall 55-73 mark in

19 seasons on Finnesey Field. The location has also been home to men’s soccer since 1958 and

women’s soccer since 1996, while the field hockey team wrapped upits last season on Finnesey in 2007.

Overall, the site has seen 1,168 games entering the 2012-13 aca-demic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 530-588-50.

THE HAWKOne of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its

wings for 56 years. 9The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in con-

stant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the SaintJoseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die."

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. Atthat time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol.More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slimmargin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray ath-letes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 56-year history. It has been selected asthe nation’s top mascot by The SportingNews, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street& Smith’sBasketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Famein 2008.

Despite a 5-11 overall record in 2012, the Saint Joseph’swomen’s lacrosse team saw each of its graduating seniors puttheir names in the SJU record book. Although the Hawks ulti-mately fell short of their postseason aspirations, head coachDenise Roessler was pleased with the effort her tight knit groupshowed on and off the field.

Led by the 44-goal season of senior Grace Dinn, the Hawksput double-digit goals on the board in half of their games. Withher explosive season, Dinn found herself fifth all time in scoringwith 121 career goals. Helping her find the back of the net wassenior Alana Glanell, who moved her way up the ranks into sixthwith 32 career assists.

Patrolling the midfield, seniors Julie Mineweaser and JenPeters also stamped their names in the SJU records their ownways. Mineweaser cracked into the top 10, climbing over thecentury mark with 106 ground balls to go with her 53 causedturnovers, which is good for seventh all time. Peters’s 88 careergoals cemented her in the eighth spot as she scored double-digitgoals each of her four years on Hawk Hill.

On a defense that led the Atlantic 10 in caused turnovers, apair of seniors did their part to rewrite the defensive stats. AlliMacDonald continued her dominance on the backline in 2012causing 24 turnovers as she accumulated a total of 67 in hercareer to grab first all time. Her defensive partner and three-timeA-10 second-team honoree Elizabeth Fox caused 62 in theCrimson and Gray to tie for fourth all-time.

Senior Carly Kindbom chipped in on the defensive end tolead all defenders with 10 goals while junior Heather Olson andsophomore Brittany Hanrahan stepped up to play key minutes asthey are expected to fill the shoes of the departing seniors.

Other bright spots came by way of sophomores AbbyAnanian and Val Paolucci. As the draw specialist, Ananian con-trolled 65 draws to go with her 15 goals and seven assists.Paolucci helped to add 24 goals as she shot over 46 percent.

Between the pipes, junior Alisha Aquilino started all 16games, stopping 109 shots and picking up 19 ground balls.

The squad started the year off with a loss to Drexel butrebounded just three days later when it topped Wagner, 14-7, inthe home opener as Dinn led Saint Joseph’s with five goals. Aftertough losses to Monmouth and Jacksonville, the Hawks bouncedback with their most impressive win of the year with a17-3 rout over Presbyterian that featured hat tricks fromAnanian, Dinn and Mineweaser.

Following the Presbyterian game, the group carried momen-tum into the next week when it beat Saint Francis (Pa.), 12-3, andManhattan, 14-12, as Dinn combined to scored eight goals. Fromthere, the Hawks dropped five straight including consecutiveone-goal losses to Rutgers and George Washington. To close outthe season, the Hawks dropped three straight, including a 13-10,overtime loss to Duquesne on Senior Day.

After the five game skid, SJU grabbed it first conference winover St. Bonaventure, 17-11, on Finnesey Field. Dinn, Peters, andsenior Meghan McDevitt highlighted the victory as they eachposted five-point days.

Although the Hawks lose a strong senior class next year, the2013 Hawks are expected to return strong leadership and a solid

Suzy Herlihy (‘09) was named theAtlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year.

Helene Tursi (‘09) was named to theAtlantic 10 All-Conference First Team.

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now theAtlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What start-ed as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affilia-tion has grown into a 16-university, 21-sport leaguethat is universally hailed as one of the best confer-ences in the country.

That growth and prominence is a direct resultof the ideals and commitments of the memberinstitutions of the Atlantic 10 – Butler University, the University of Dayton, Duquesne University,Fordham University, The George WashingtonUniversity, La Salle University, University ofMassachusetts, University of North Carolina atCharlotte, University of Rhode Island, University ofRichmond, St. Bonaventure University, SaintJoseph's University, Saint Louis University, TempleUniversity, Virginia Commonwealth University, andXavier University.

In 2011-12, the Atlantic 10 was proactive innavigating the sweeping conference realignmentissues, adding Butler University and VirginiaCommonwealth University, both of which beganfull membership on July 1, 2012. The league wasdeclared the “winner” of conference realignmentby several media outlets, arguably strengtheningthe league to its best-ever lineup with a record 16members institutions. The additions were part of afive-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was adoptedduring the 2010-11 academic year.

The 16 member institutions of the A-10 areunited and strengthened by their diversity. Each isextraordinary in its educational mission, whether ofa Catholic faith, a private university or a land grantinstitution. The varied pursuits of each memberprove that there are many threads that weave thefabric for a great conference.

The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total popu-lation of over 82 million people within its geograph-ic footprint of nine states and the District ofColumbia, will crown champions in 21 sports thisyear: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women'sindoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's andwomen's swimming & diving, men's and women'stennis, and women's volleyball.

The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have madea strong commitment to making the academic andathletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recog-nize the academic accomplishments of its student-

athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, whichcites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5grade point average or better, recognized a record2,728 student-athletes in 2011-12.

The league sponsors Academic All-Conferenceteams in each of its sports and honors two student-athletes as the A-10 Student-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgradu-ate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes.In 2011-12, nearly 200 student-athletes earnedAcademic All-Conference recognition, whileDayton’s Yvonne Marten, Jennifer Nalepa fromSaint Louis, Marissa Norman of Rhode Island andCharlotte’s Macey Ruble received postgraduatescholarship grants.

The Atlantic 10 has 56 of the more than 950Division I sports teams being honored with publicrecognition awards for their latest multi-yearAcademic Progress Rate scores. The Atlantic 10Conference ranks fourth in number of teams publi-cally recognized by the NCAA and fifth in overallAPR average among all 32 Division I Conferenceswith a 981 average. The league boasted 40 squadswith perfect scores and 104 teams with a score of990 or better. In total, 188 A-10 teams were at orabove the national average, representing 70 per-cent of all A-10 teams. Of the 21 championshipsponsored sports in the Atlantic 10, 19 had a sportaverage higher than the national average. Thereare six sports (field hockey, women's cross country, lacrosse, women's swimming & diving, women'sindoor track & field and women's outdoor track &field) in which every A-10 team in that sport isabove the national average.

The Atlantic 10 boasted a third-place rankingin the single-year Graduation Success Rate (GSR)among all Division I leagues. Measured in a six-yearwindow, 89 percent of freshman enrolling in an A-10 institution in 2004 graduated. Twelve of theleague's institutions were above the national four-year GSR average of 8o percent and five of thoseprograms, Dayton, George Washington, Richmond,Saint Joseph's and Xavier are all over 90 percent. The Atlantic 10 also rates in the Top 10 in men'sbasketball, women's basketball and baseball in thesingle-year GSR. The league is ninth nationally inmen's basketball, graduating at a 74 percent rate, nearly seven percent above the national average. Inwomen's basketball the league ranks sixth with anincredible 96 percent graduation rate for its 2004freshman class, 10 percent higher than the nation-al average. In baseball, the A-10 is tied for thirdnationally with an 87 percent GSR, also 10 percenthigher than the national average.
