Design Statement

Mission Church (Built in 1912)

New Rectory Kitchen

This kitchen (remodeled 2010) is located in the resident priest’s private quarters at

Our Lady of the Wayside Church in Portola Valley, California.

The goal: To design a large kitchen that would accommodate several cooks, allow for a friendly space for parishioners to gather while retaining the occupant’s privacy.

The Result: Walls were completely removed and rooms reallocated to produce one large open space. A wide hallway from the in-house chapel was created for direct entry to the kitchen, leaving the staircase leading to private quarters upstairs less accessible to non-residents.

The Kitchen’s new layout includes two sinks, two dishwashers, and a large cooking-range in the island; all of which easily accommodate multiple cooks and recurrently large events. Each new finish reflects the church’s authentic Mission-style and includes American cherry cabinets and floors, oil-rubbed bronze details, a travertine backsplash, and rich granite countertops.
