My Dear Parishioners: Welcome to the season of Advent. Most of us know the drill by now. We start out saying we are going to try to keep our minds on the true meaning of Christmas, that is the birth of Jesus Christ. But what happens is we all get caught up in the pressures imposed by

shopping, party planning, children's activities, etc., so that another year goes by and our original goal kind of gets lost in the shuffle. It happens to all of us. I suggest that this year we just try again. Mother Teresa of Calcutta's words offer us consolation when she said: "God doesn't expect us to be successful. He expects us to be faithful." There are a number of Advent activities that I believe help to point us in that right direction of faithfulness. Let me explain a few of them. Tomorrow, Monday, November 28th, all of us priests go to St Charles Seminary for our annual Day of Sanctification for Priests. This Day of Recollection is like our way of putting things in proper perspective before one of our holiest and busiest of seasons. Pray for us that we will set a good example. This Wednesday, our parish celebrates one of our fa-vorite Advent events - our Advent Gift Giving Mass. Last year the attendance was better but I believe this lit-urgy deserves a full Church. Don't just drop off your gift in the morning (unless absolutely necessary). Come to the Mass with your children and with them carry your gift to the needy so that you can look them in the eye and say "Welcome" and "Merry Christmas". Your welcoming words and gesture is just as important as your gift. Next Sunday, we proudly present our Annual Christ-mas Concert. Our Church is transformed into a magnifi-cent concert hall as all of our parish and school musical ensembles, along with a professional orchestra, perform some of Christianity's best loved and beautiful Christmas music. By the way, we still need some sponsors for the event. Thank you. Finally, my first reminder.... there will be more...... that the most important Advent celebration is when we return to our Heavenly Father through a fruitful reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Stay tuned. More on Advent confessions in next week's bulletin. In the mean-time may you have a Holy and Blessed Advent season. Come Lord Jesus! May God Bless you,

Scripture Readings Second Sunday of Advent December 4, 2016 Isaiah 11: 1-10 Psalm 72 Romans 15: 4-9 Matthew 3: 1-12 This seems to be a “day of the prophets.” the prophet Isaiah, John the Baptist, and Paul, the prophet to the Gen-tiles, are all telling us about God’s Chosen One, who comes with judgment and mercy. What does this word say to us today? Can we be prophets of the Lord, announcing God’s gracious love to all those around us?

2016 Day of Sanctification For Priests The priests of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia assemble each year for a day of prayer and reflection on the Sacred Priesthood. This year our priests will gather with Archbishop Chaput at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary on Monday, Nov. 28, for the 2016 Day of Sanctification for Priests. Please pray for all priests of the Archdiocese, especially this weekend and Monday, with the following prayer from the Roman Missal:

Lord our God, who in governing your people

make use of the ministry of Priests, grant to these men

a persevering obedience to your will, so that by their ministry and life

they may gain glory for you in Christ. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

As we end our first trimester of the school year this week, we begin the holy season of Advent. Advent is both a time to prepare for Christmas and to reflect on Jesus' coming again in glory. Our school is using the Jesse Tree as a way to remind us of the true meaning of this Holy Season. Each day, students participate in our school community prayer by reciting a bible verse over the PA system and then decorating our school Christmas tree with their own colorful ornament. This month we are also focusing on the virtue of patience. We teach our students that by practicing the virtue of patience, we are given a deeper insight to the truths of our faith. May God bless you during this special season as we ea-gerly wait for our Lord’s coming!

Dear Parishioners,

This Sunday - November 27 - is the beginning of the new liturgical year - ADVENT - four weeks before Christmas. It is the season in which we prepare for the great celebration of Jesus' birth at Christmas. It is a season of HOPE. Often, unfortu-nately, the Advent journey to hope can be overshadowed by repeated journeys to the mall. It might do us some good to sit down and answer the question of who or what really controls our celebration of this season. Pressure to "celebrate" Christmas according to the norms of secular culture can be enormous. Deciding how much to spend and when to decorate, going to school and church programs, cooking, cleaning and gift buying all seem to push more important things into the background. But, however we deal with this pressure, it's important to do whatever we can to live out Advent as fully as possible; Christmas is all but empty if we have not really let our hearts be formed by the profound realities of waiting, expectation, repentance and hope. Today we will be making Advent wreaths in the Drexel cen-ter and distributing symbols of the Jesse tree as a way of remembering the Jewish roots of the Messiah. The inspiration for the "Jesse tree" is found in the Book of Isaiah, who prophesied the coming of the Messiah, and in both the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, where we read the genealogy of Jesus (that is, a tracing of His family tree). It is easy to make a tree from paper or place a real branch in a pot of sand or clay. Decorate that branch day by day with symbols (just google "Jesse tree" on your computer for a ton of symbols) made of construction paper. Next week our Jesse tree and pictures of St. Bede's Advent wreath making will be displayed on and near the bulletin board between the school and church. Take some time to look at that display, maybe you will get some good ideas to celebrate Advent with your family. Let us keep each other in prayer.

Retirement Fund for ReligiousCollection Dec. 3-4

Dear Friends in Christ,

On September 4th in Saint Peter's Square, Pope Francis proclaimed Mother Teresa of Calcutta a Saint to be honored by the Universal Church. In many ways, the canonization was just a seal of confirmation for a life lived in total dedication to God's people, especially the most neglected. The ministry of Saint Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity exemplifies for

all of us the power of the Holy Spirit working through human beings, with all their talents and deficiencies, to give witness to Jesus and the Gospel. Our many Religious men and women who have served our Archdiocese have given a similar example in education, caring for the sick and abandoned, and in a variety of apostolic en-deavors geared to changing times. Likewise, our contemplative Religious, in lives of prayer and solitude, bring down upon us numerous graces. With gratitude for their ministry over the years and con-scious of the increasing demands of retirement care, each year our dioceses sponsor The Retirement Fund for Religious Col-lection. This appeal enables all of us to generously thank our Religious for their service and to let them know that we do not forget them in their needs, particularly in their later years. As Archbishop, I ask that you remember all our Religious in prayerful remembrance and in generous support of the collec-tion scheduled for December 3-4. I am quite sure that these men and women will appreciate your kindness and concern. May the Lord's peace abide with us all. Gratefully in Jesus Christ,

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput

A special thank you to all the dedicated adorers who spend an hour or more every week with Jesus in the adoration chapel. Many adorers have been part of this devotion since we began in 1996. Time spent with Jesus- one on one- in the quiet and peacefulness of the adoration chapel is precious. Please join us by promising to spend an hour a week with Jesus and start sharing in the blessings of Eucharistic Adoration. Our current open hours are: Monday 10AM & 1PM, Tues-day 2AM, Friday 3AM, 11AM & 12PM, Saturday 2AM, 6PM & 8PM. If the open hours are inconvenient for you due to your schedule, please contact us to arrange a better time. Learn More About KAIROS Hello Everyone,

Maritza was kind enough to allow me to use her column space this week to speak a few words about the KAIROS retreat we are planning for this February 2017. KAIROS is a 3 night retreat for juniors and seniors that is normally offered to students who attend Catholic high school. While I was school minister at Conwell-Egan Catholic, I had the opportunity to help plan and lead two KAIROS retreats and I was always impressed by how much the students thoroughly enjoyed their experience; not only was KAIROS a bonding experience on a human level but it led them into deeper relationship with God. Well, Maritza and I were talking shortly after I arrived here, and we thought it would be a great to give our teens who attend our area public schools the same opportunity to take advantage of a KAIROS retreat before they graduate from their respective school. One of the nice things about the retreat is that, while adults are present for help and supervision, it is really led by other students who have attended the retreat in the past. We've chosen a nice retreat center just outside of Hershey, PA complete with fire-pits, outdoor activities and a small lake for this years KAIROS location. Check out our website at st-bede.org/youthministry or call the Youth Ministry Office at 215-357-5113 for more details.
