Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Fr. Anthony’s Faith Formation Corner The Value of Labor

Happy Labor Day weekend to all of you! Labor Day is strictly a civil holiday in the USA, celebrated on the first Monday of September. Is it not ironic that, in order to celebrate “labor,” people get a day off? However, the concepts of work and rest are not foreign to our Christian spirituality at all. In the creation accounts in the book of Genesis, even God rested on the Sabbath after having created everything on the first six days. In our Catholic liturgical calendar, we have the feast St. Joseph the worker on May 1—different from Joseph the husband of Mary on March 19. Labor and rest are much related. Both are important in our lives.

I still remember the very first encyclical that I ever came across: Rerum No-varum, promulgated by Pope Leo XIII in 1891. An encyclical is a letter from the bishop of Rome, written in his capacity as the successor of Peter, traditionally addressed to his brother bishops of both the Western and Eastern rites—although later encyclicals were also addressed to all the Catholic faithful and all “people of good will” (as with Pacem in Terris by John XXIII in 1963); or even addressed to “every person” living on this planet (Laudato Si, by Pope Francis in 2015). The title of an encyclical, or of any official church doc-ument, is taken from the first two or three Latin words of the document itself. Most encyclicals throughout history, although promulgated under the names and authority of the popes, were probably NOT written by the popes them-selves, but by ghost writers who were theological experts in the papal household.

Anyway, Rerum Novarum would fall under the category of “social” encyclicals. In the history of Catholic social teaching, every student of history would know this document. It was written in the context of the Industrial Revolution in 19th-century Europe, when a lot of workers were overworked and underpaid. I do not remember all the details. But a notable thing asserted by Leo XIII was the fact that labor was always there in the beginning: even if there were no original sin, Adam and Eve would not have been idle, but would have been working. Leo also de-nounced any type of injustice shown toward the working class. And against the Marxists, the pope defended the right to “private properties” as a natural right.

From this important social encyclical, we are reminded of the dignity of our labor. In this fast-paced society where many people view work as a necessary evil and find it loathsome at times, we have to remind Catholics that our work is actually dignified. The Church respects the rights of workers and accepts all types of work—except those that are illegal and/or immoral, such as selling drugs or prostitution, and the like. So whether you work in the office, at a school, at a hospital, in a restaurant, in a business setting, or pick strawberries on the field: try to see the value and dignity of all these different types of labor. They are necessary for our society at large. No type of legiti-mate work goes unappreciated in the eyes of the Church… “Oh Lord, give success to the work of our hands,” (Ps 90)! Happy Labor Day!

God’s Plan for Marriage is Beautiful

Come and listen to the promises that God has for you. Prepare for a Christian Marriage within the Catholic Church. This course is for those who are engaged to be married, seriously dating, wanting to have their marriage blessed in the Church, or those who are looking for an answer to the vocation of marriage. The Word of God is used throughout a series of 10 meetings to introduce the plan of God for mar- riage. Reconciliation and forgiveness, the holiness of the sexual act in marriage, the education of chil dren, and the family as a light to the world are some of the aspects presented.

Please call John or Gwen Lippold @ 714-842-4094 for more details or Call St. Barbara Church @ 714-775-7733. Classes begin Thursday, September 7, 2017 @ 7:30 pm in Classroom 2-6 (St. Barbara)

SIGUIENDO A CRISTO
