Almost Happy New Year, Brothers and Sisters: We all have heard the following lyrics on the radio – “On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love sent to me: 12 Drummers Drumming, 11 Pipers Piping, 10 Lords a Leaping, 9 Ladies Dancing, 8 Maids a Milking, 7 Swans a Swimming, 6 Geese a Laying, 5 Golden Rings, 4 Calling Birds, 3 French Hens, 2 Turtle Doves & a Partridge in a Pear Tree…” Maybe you did not know, this traditional Christmas song comes from the persecution of Catholics in England during the terrible rule of Queen Elizabeth the First; from 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young students. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of the Catholic faith. Each element in the Carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember. To fit the number scheme, when you reach number 9, representing the Fruits of the Holy Ghost, the originator combined 6 to make 3, taking the 6 fruits that were similar. The "True Love" one hears in the song is not a smitten boy or girlfriend but Jesus Christ, because genuine Love was born on Christmas Day. The partridge in the pear tree also represents Him because that bird is willing to sacrifice its life, if necessary, to protect its young by feigning injury to draw away predators. From December 25th (the birthday of Jesus) until January 6th makes a “baker’s dozen” – a thirteen day “Christmastide” – Christmas does not cease until January 6th! On December 26th we celebrate St. Stephen’s Day, a good day to sing carols and remember Good King Wenceslaus, a Christian martyr who died in 937 A.D. in Bohemia. On the 28th, Holy Innocents Day, we can remember in special prayer all those who choose to end lives in the womb – and those parents who have lost children due to miscarriage and post-birth health challenges. Let us pray on this day for many more families to choose life!
Lastly on January 5th, we can remember in a special way our City’s great & saintly bishop, John Nepomucene Neumann CSsR, fifth bishop of Philadelphia. May we sincerely ask him to intercede for the church here in Philadelphia, and especially for whatever the future holds for Catholic education here in the city and abroad in the Archdiocese. Please know that Father Large, the deacons and me will remember all of you in prayer as we lead or assist at New Year’s Masses here in our parish church. May the Lord fill you all with His peace and Love as we enter 2021! + Father Rossi, Pastor
