Safari A - ZACCOMMODATIONOn Safari is in lodges, tented lodges or tented camps.LODGES are small by normal hotel standards (50-120 beds), withmost of the facilities you would find in a good quality hotel such aslounge, bar, dining room, swimming pool and shop. Bedrooms areusually twin-bedded (doubles are limited and must be specificallyrequested) with en-suite bathroom facilities (except Shimba).TENTED LODGES are similar to lodges but with tented bed-rooms. These are set on permanent bases, are fully furnished, insectproofed and have a fully equipped bathroom attached at the back -hot and cold running water, shower, basin and WC. TENTED CAMPS are smaller (10-50 beds), tend to be privatelyowned and offer a more intimate atmosphere with personalised ser-vice. Public rooms are also under canvas, while meals are often takenoutside around the camp-fire. They may not have a swimming poolor shop and are often situated in more remote locations.

AIRPORT DEPARTURE TAX AND SERVICE CHARGEAirport departure taxes are generally included in price of the inter-national flight ticket for all four countries. It is also the policy ofExpress Travel group to quote domestic fares inclusive of airporttaxes and this will be paid by our airport reps locally.

BAGGAGEClients on our scheduled safaris are asked to restrict baggage to onemedium size suitcase (or better still, two smaller, flexible holdalls),plus hand baggage, per person. On private safaris, this restrictiononly applies if the vehicle is full. An overnight bag only may be takento Treetops and the Ark.There is a baggage weight restriction on all scheduled domesticflights in Kenya and Tanzania as follows:KQ/QP/Fly540 NBO/MBA and NBO/MYD 20kg ppPW ARK/ZNZ, JRO/ZNZ 20kg ppAll other flights 15kg per personExcess baggage charges are usually nominal, but if the aircraft is fullthe excess baggage may be refused. When on safari your Nairobi or Arusha hotel will be happy to storeexcess baggage free of charge until your return.

CLOTHING and KITClothing should be practical, comfortable and informal. Lightweightcotton clothing such as shirts, shorts, trousers or skirts are ideal onsafari, while a warm sweater or jacket (and socks!) may be needed forearly morning game drives and cool highland evenings. It is unlikelythat jacket and tie will be needed unless you are on business. Bringyour swimwear, sunhat, suncream, sunglasses, a small flash- light(torch), alarm clock and comfortable, dustproof shoes. Lip balm, insect repellant, moneybelt and reading material, are also useful.Leave valuable jewellery at home.

ELECTRICITYThe electrical supply in Kenya and Tanzania is 240v/50 Hz.Sockets are usually 3 pin square (British type). In tented camps andlodges it is usually possible to re-charge video camera batteries atreception on request.

FLYING DOCTOR SOCIETYFlying Doctor Service insurance cover is included in our safariprices for most clients booked through Express Travel Group. Thisinsurance provides emergency air medical evacuation from any-where in Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Uganda and Rwanda for a peri-od up to 30 days.

Bookings for city or beach hotels only where there are good hospital facilitiesnearby are not covered. For example:

Beach only stays on the Mombasa coast (except Lamu and Kiwayu).

City stays in Nairobi, Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, Kampala and Kigali.

Clients must have standard travel/medical insurance as normallyprovided by tour operators or reputable international insurancecompanies. Our terms and conditions plus full details of cover byFDS are available from any of our offices.

HEALTHYellow fever and Cholera vaccination certificates are required for vis-itors arriving from infected areas. There are a number of other inoc-ulations recommended to visitors. Clients are advised to contacttheir own doctor or local medical advisory centre for up to date infor-mation. Malaria is endemic in East Africa and visitors should followa course of Malaria prophylactics according to doctors advice.

HOTEL CHECK-IN AND CHECK-OUTNormal check-out time is 1000 hrs. Rooms may not therefore beavailable for early check-in unless booked from the night before. Dayrooms can usually be reserved up to 1800 hrs (6 p.m.).

LAUNDRYMost hotels and lodges offer laundry services.

MEALSDining is an integral part of the safari experience. High standards ofcuisine and a welcoming choice of mouthwatering dishes will usual-ly greet the hungry guest just in from safari. Fullboard is normallyprovided and includes early morning tea, full breakfast, buffet lunch, afternoon tea and a three or four course dinner with choice of dish-es. Tea and coffee is served with all meals. Town hotels are usuallybooked on bed and breakfast basis.

MONEYShillings are the local currency. To avoid carrying too much cash, wesuggest clients take travellers cheques in any major currency or usecredit cards (Visa, Mastercard and Amex) which are widely accept-ed in East Africa. Most of the hotels and lodges will take credit cardsbut may charge a percentage. There are ATM machines in Nairobi,Mombasa, Diani, Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar Stone town,Kampala and Kigali.Since credit card fraud is now an issue all over the world, we wouldadvise clients not to use them other than in recognised establish-ments and to take standard precautions when using ATM machines.

PHOTOGRAPHYBring plenty of film or digital storage with you. Most of the commontypes of film or memory cards can be bought in the cities or in hotelsand lodges on safari. Useful items include telephoto (zoom) lenses, filters, mini-tripods, dust-proof bags and, of course, spare batteries.Home video cameras may be brought in but professional filming issubject to Government permits and levies. Binoculars are an invalu-able aid to spotting distant animals or birds.

TELEPHONESAll Nairobi and most Coast hotels have international dial facilityfrom your bedroom. On safari this is unusual but in some lodges andcamps calls may be booked through reception. Check prices beforemaking calls from hotels. There is a wide mobile phone network but,on safari, they should not be used in public areas or on game drives.

TRANSPORTROAD SAFARISTransport on road safari is by 7-seat minibus or 4x4 Landcruiser, eachwith a seat by a window. All passengers except the one next to thedriver have access to an opening roof hatch for easy game viewing. Our safari vehicles carry a cool-box, binoculars and wildlife referencebooks. Some safaris will include game viewing in 4 wheel drive vehicleswhich are operated by the camp or lodge on seat-in-car basis (sharewith other guests). The vehicles carry a maximum of 7 persons andwill either have opening roof hatches or may be open-sided with can-vas roof for shade against the sun.

FLYING SAFARISTransport on flying safaris utilising scheduled flights is by light pro-peller aircraft of 4 - 50 seats.

VISAS, INOCULATIONS AND INSURANCEOur safari prices do not include the cost or provision of visas, inocu-lations or personal insurance. Tour Operators and Travel agents areresponsible for their clients requirements.

OVERVIEWThe Climate in East Africa is strongly influenced by altitude andproximity to the sea. The coast has a hot and humid tropical climate(July and August are cooler and less humid). Inland, a more temper-ate climate prevails, usually with warm, sunny days and cool nights. In July and August the highland areas can be overcast during the dayand cold at night. As a general rule the cool season runs June toAugust and the hot season January to March. The long rains occurduring mid-March to May, and the short rains end October to mid-December. However rainfall is not continuous and days are oftenbright and warm. The charts on page 9 give a guideline to the cli-mate on the coast and inland (Nairobi is given as an example). However, it should be noted that there are considerable inland cli-mate variations according to region, especially in Tanzania.

THE SERENGETI AND MARA ECOSYSTEMThe warm, wet season runs from December to March followed bythe long rains in April and May. The cool, dry season runs from Juneto October followed by the short rains in November. The dry seasonis much more extreme in Ndutu and Southern Serengeti than theNorth, while heavy storms can occur in Masai Mara during August.

THE LOWLAND GAME PARKS IN KENYASamburu, Tsavo, Amboseli and the Rift Valley are generally dry andwith very low air humidity except during the long rains (April-May)and the short rains (November). June, July and August are thecoolest months.

TARANGIRESeasons in Tarangire are similar to Southern Serengeti. The differ-ence is that game viewing is best during the dry season July -October when the wildlife is concentrated around the Tarangireriver. Roads can become impassable during the long rains.

THE SOUTHERN PARKS IN TANZANIASelous Reserve has a wet season from November to May and dry sea-son June to October. Game viewing is best during the dry season.Ruaha National park has a slightly longer dry season being June toNovember with a wet season January to March. Again, game view-ing is best during the dry season. In both areas, roads can become impassable during the wet monthsand long grass may hinder game viewing up until June.

The Serengeti - Mara - Ngorongoro Ecosystem

THE WILDEBEEST MIGRATION

The migration involves well over a million animals and approximate-ly 500 miles of travel. The true migrants are the wildebeests or whitebearded gnu.Zebra and gazelle participate but are only partial migrants. It is ques-tionable whether the zebra make the full journey and it is certainthat the gazelle do not leave the Serengeti. The movement of the wildebeest occurs according to the rains. Ingeneral the wet season in Serengeti runs from November through toMay and the dry season May to October, although this may vary fromyear to year.

January, February, March, April :At this time of the year the wildebeest are in Serengeti Nationalpark and Ndutu, scattered across the median and short grass plainssouth of Seronera. Depending on the water and grazing they roamthe plains with large concentrations around Lake Ndutu andOlduvai.

During this period there is enough rain to keep the surface water-holes full and the grazing good. Wildebeest calving occurs inFebruary and there are literally hundreds of calves. Predatory activi-ty is high with an abundance of lion, cheetah, Cape hunting dog, spotted hyena, with frequent sightings of leopard.

May, June, July:By the beginning of May, the rains start to subside and the surface

waterholes begin to dry up. The grazing is now becoming short. Thewildebeest gather into larger and larger herds and start moving northand west towards Lake Victoria leaving the plains for the highercountry where there is permanent water and more grazing. Theherds continue west following the Grumeti river and reach within 20miles of the lake. It is for this reason the western arm of theSerengeti was included in the National Park and is called “TheWestern Corridor”.Sometime during June the herds move north again through Ikomaand head for the Mara. Depending on the rain and grazing they reachthe Mara River towards the end of July.

August, September, October :

The great herds are more concentrated now and remain in the Mara

and Northern Serengeti for approx. 2-3 months. During this period

the courtship and breeding takes place. By October they have con-

sumed most of the grass from the Mara River to the Keekorok and

Lobo valleys.

November, December :

As the grazing in the Mara becomes sparse and the Wildebeest senserain approaching, they begin the long migration South again on amore direct route towards the Seronera and Ndutu plains.By December the herds are back where they began at the beginningof the year and the calving season approaches.

Gorilla tracking Uganda and Rwanda

Uganda and Rwanda have been blessed with stunningly beautifuland varied landscapes, from the tropical splendour of the centralUgandan plateau to the volcanic Virunga mountains. Add to this adramatic array of lakes and rivers together with one of the highestconcentrations of rare Primates in the world (Gorillas, Colobus mon-keys and Chimpanzees). Thus are Uganda and Rwanda the perfectfoil to Kenya and Tanzania’s big game attractions.

The Gorillas inhabit the thick forests of the Virunga mountainswhich straddle the border between Uganda and Rwanda. Access tothese mountains from Kampala is approx 10 hrs drive while accessfrom Kigali is less than 2 hours drive. For this reason we suggestRwanda is preferable for Gorilla tracking combined with Kenya orTanzania, while Uganda is a superb safari destination in its own rightand Gorilla tracking can be combined with visits to Murchison Falls,Queen Elizabeth park, Kabale, the source of the river Nile and LakeVictoria (see Primate Safari).

Gorilla tracking permits are in short supply and therefore bookingwell ahead is essential.
