‘filling in the ranks.” Parents, please invite your child to consider being an
altar server. They will not be left alone. There are peo-
ple ready to train them. Thank you to parents and their children for considering
this.
To my brothers and sisters in Christ, As this is my last weekend at Sacred Heart Parish, I want to thank you for the privilege of being your par-ish priest. When I arrived here in August of 2016, you and I did not know what to expect from one another. However, after almost two years (admittedly a short period of time), we can look back and recognize the good things that God has done in and among us. I hope that you can see in your life, as I do in mine, how God has brought about a renewal in the identity to become like Christ. Our journey together over these 22 months has been a blessed one for me. I am most grateful to God for all the joys and sufferings with which He blessed me during my time here.
I want to thank all of you who welcomed me and in-vested your time, talent, and treasure in the life of the parish. By God’s grace and providence there are
many successes that we have had: Light of the World Retreat Community, the renewal in our music, im-proved facility updates (no more flooding!), the CPL monthly offertory program (which is still waiting for more to join), ownership of new candles and a way to memorialize loved ones, all the marriages - baptisms - confessions - Communions - Confirmations that have taken place, the new parishioners that have joined us, and all the ways in which we have loved our beloved dead by commending them to God—just a few of the many things for which we owe thanksgiving to God.
My hope is that in some way I have helped you in your journey to responding to God’s call for your holi-
ness. If I have, thanks be to God. If I have not, let us pray for one another that we might learn to respond to God’s calling all the more.
There are good things happening here at this parish and I am sorry that I cannot be a part of the next step forward that this parish will take. This parish has something to offer that people are looking for.
There are many needs that this parish has and it is waiting for each of you to offer what you can of your time, treasure, and talent. Please consider how you can make an increased offering of from your bless-ings. Like a family, a parish only flourishes if everyone is involved.
Fr. Guy Sciacca is excited to be your parish priest. I have told him about all the good things that are hap-pening here. May God bless him and you. I look for-ward to hearing about the holiness that will rise up from this parish. In Christ our Hope,
Fr. Eric Bennett

Pivotal Players Series at Sacred Heart On Wednesday, May 30, at 6:30pm we will begin a new series by Bishop Robert Barron. During Lent we
watched the Catholicism Series and had great discussions on the faith. Seeking to learn more and reflect on
our faith, we are holding another series by Bishop Barron: Pivotal Players. In this, Bishop Barron is on a new
journey to unlock the truth behind the Catholic Church's most influential people.
Week 3: St. Catherine of Siena The Mystic
Is the physical world all there is? Is science the only path to ascertaining truth? St. Catherine of Siena witness-
es to a higher world beyond the material. Though the 14th century mystic never studied theology, and never
learned how to read or write, her life constitutes a powerful challenge to the secularism of our time.
Week 7 Sacrament of Holy Matrimony 1601 "The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole
of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this cove-
nant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament."
1605 Holy Scripture affirms that man and woman were created for one another: "It is not good that the man should be
alone." The woman, "flesh of his flesh," his equal, his nearest in all things, is given to him by God as a "helpmate"; she
thus represents God from whom comes our help. "Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his
wife, and they become one flesh." The Lord himself shows that this signifies an unbreakable union of their two lives by
recalling what the plan of the Creator had been "in the beginning": "So they are no longer two, but one flesh.
1608 To heal the wounds of sin, man and woman need the help of the grace that God in his infinite mercy never refuses
them. Without his help man and woman cannot achieve the union of their lives for which God created them "in the be-
ginning."
1613 On the threshold of his public life Jesus performs his first sign during a wedding feast. The Church attaches great
importance to Jesus' presence at the wedding at Cana. She sees in it the confirmation of the goodness of marriage and the
proclamation that thenceforth marriage will be an efficacious sign of Christ's presence.
1614 In his preaching Jesus unequivocally taught the original meaning of the union of man and woman as the Creator
willed it from the beginning...permission given by Moses to divorce one's wife was a concession to the hardness of
hearts. The matrimonial union of man and woman is indissoluble: God himself has determined it.
1615 This unequivocal insistence on the indissolubility of the marriage bond may have left some perplexed and could
seem to be a demand impossible to realize. However, Jesus has not placed on spouses a burden impossible to bear, or too
heavy. It is by following Christ, renouncing themselves, and taking up their crosses that spouses will be able to "receive"
the original meaning of marriage and live it with the help of Christ.
1638 "From a valid marriage arises a bond between the spouses which by its very nature is perpetual and exclusive; fur-
thermore, in a Christian marriage the spouses are strengthened and, as it were, consecrated for the duties and the dignity
of their state by a special sacrament."...This grace proper to the sacrament of Matrimony is intended to perfect the cou-
ple's love and to strengthen their indissoluble unity. By this grace they "help one another to attain holiness in their mar-
ried life and in welcoming and educating their children.
1640 The marriage bond has been established by God in such a way that a marriage concluded and consummated be-
tween baptized persons can never be dissolved. This bond, which results from the free human act of the spouses and their
consummation of the marriage, is a reality, irrevocable, and gives rise to a covenant guaranteed by God's fidelity.
1664 Unity, indissolubility, and openness to fertility are essential to marriage. Divorce separates what God has joined
together; the refusal of fertility turns married life away from its "supreme gift.”
1665 The remarriage of persons divorced from a living, lawful spouse contravenes the plan and law of God as taught by
Christ. They are not separated from the Church, but they cannot receive Eucharistic communion. They will lead Chris-
tian lives especially by educating their children in the faith.

Perpetual Candles at Sacred Heart
As May is the month of Our Lady, we are reminded that our greatest intercessor is Our Lady.
We are blessed to have three sacred spaces with candles at which we can light a candle for our
prayers and special intentions.
These candles can be used for weekly visits, as many of you already do. There is also the pos-
sibility to reserve a candle for a month(s) or a year. Some of the intentions for which a num-
ber of parishioners have reserved candles:
Deceased or living family
Condolence for friends or family
Anniversary of Marriage
Birthday
Automatically with the condolences, we send a letter to notify the grieving family of the candle
lit in our church for their loved one. We can also send a letter when requested for the others.
Visit one of our candle devotional spaces to light a candle. Fill out the form below to re-
serve a candle for a month or year.
Prayer before Holy Communion
O Lord, Jesus Christ, King of everlasting glory, be-
hold I desire to come to you this day, and to receive
your Body and Blood in this heavenly Sacrament, for
your honor and glory, and the good of my soul. I de-
sire to receive you, because it is your desire, and you
have so willed it: blessed be your Name forever. I
desire to come to you like Mary Magdalen, that I
may be delivered from all my evils, and embrace
you, my only Good. I desire to come to you, that I
may be happily united to you, that I may henceforth
abide in you, and you in me; and that nothing in life
or death may ever separate me from you. Amen.
Prayer after Holy Communion
Anima Christi
Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O good Jesus, hear me.
Within Thy wounds hide me.
Suffer me not to be separated from Thee.
From the malignant enemy, defend me.
In the hour of my death, call me.
And bid me come to Thee.
That with Thy saints I may praise Thee.

Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
(to be recited for 9 days from Thursday, May 31 to Friday, June 8) I. O my Jesus, you have said: "Truly I say to you, ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and it
will be opened to you." Behold I knock, I seek and ask for the grace of...... (here name your request)
Our Father....Hail Mary....Glory Be to the Father....Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.
II. O my Jesus, you have said: "Truly I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to
you." Behold, in your name, I ask the Father for the grace of.......(here name your request) Our Father...Hail
Mary....Glory Be To the Father....Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.
III. O my Jesus, you have said: "Truly I say to you, heaven and earth will pass away but my words will not pass
away." Encouraged by your infallible words I now ask for the grace of.....(here name your request) Our Fa-
ther....Hail Mary....Glory Be to the Father...Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.
O Sacred Heart of Jesus, for whom it is impossible not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us mis-
erable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of you, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary,
your tender Mother and ours.
Say the Hail, Holy Queen and add: St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us.
-- St. Margaret Mary Alacoque
Excerpt of address by Archbishop Chaput to a men’s conference….it is applicable to men and women “In the end, protecting and building up the Gospel witness in our age is the work of God. But he works through us. The
privilege and challenge of that work belong to us. So we need to ask ourselves: What do I want my life to mean? If I claim
to be a believing Catholic man, can I prove it with the patterns of my life? When do I pray? How often do I seek out the
Sacrament of Penance? What am I doing for the poor? How am I serving the needy? Do I really know Jesus Christ? Who
am I leading to the Church? How many young people have I asked to consider a vocation? How much time do I spend
sharing about God with my wife, my children and my friends? How well and how often do I listen for God’s presence in
my own life?
The Church has lots of good reasons why people should believe in God, and in Jesus Christ, and in the beauty and urgen-
cy of her own mission. But she has only one irrefutable argument for the truth of what she teaches: the personal example
of her saints. So what does that mean? It means the world needs faithful Catholic men, men with a hunger to be saints.
There’s only one way any of us will ever become a genuinely new man is by giving ourselves totally to God. Like it or not,
as Catholic men, we really are engaged in a struggle for the soul of a beautiful but broken world.”
Rule 1: Deepen and increase your faith. Rule 2: Act on your faith; make it a living witness to others.
Rule 3: Analyze, understand your fears; don’t be ruled by them.
Rule 4: Make Jesus Christ the only guide and goal of your life.
Rule 5: Turn away from material things; don’t be owned by them.
Rule 6: Train your mind to distinguish the true nature of good and evil.
Rule 7: Never let any failure or setback turn you away from God.
Rule 8: Face temptation guided by God, not by worry or excuses.
Rule 9: Always be ready for attacks from those who fear the Gospel and resent the good.
Rule 10: Always be prepared for temptation. And do what you can to avoid it.
Rule 11: Be alert to two special dangers: moral cowardice and personal pride.
Rule 12: Face your weaknesses and turn them into strengths. Rule 13: Treat each battle as if it were your last.
Rule 14: A life of virtue has no room for vice; the little vices we tolerate become the most deadly.
Rule 15: Every important decision has alternatives; think them through honestly in the light of what’s right.
Rule 16: Never, ever give up or give in on any matter of moral substance.
Rule 17: Always have a plan of action. Battles are often won or lost before they begin.
Rule 18: Always think through, in advance, the consequences of your choices and actions.
Rule 19: Do nothing — in public or private — that the people you love would not hold in esteem.
Rule 20: Virtue is its own reward; it needs no applause.
Rule 21: Life is demanding and brief; make it count.
Rule 22: Admit and repent your wrongs, never lose hope, encourage your brothers, and then begin again.
