Third Sunday of Advent Dear Sacred Heart Family, While I was at the seminary, my least favorite class was Homiletics. I loved the study and reflection involved in the preparation of the homily, but it was the actual “performance” of the homily in front of my classmates, homiletics instructor and the video camera that I did not like. Not only was it excruciating to give a homily to fellow (possibly snickering) classmates, but to watch myself on video with my instructor with ongoing feedback (and my own ruthless self-criticism) afterward was downright torture. Needless to say, I STRONGLY DIS-LIKED Homiletics class. One day during class my instructor must have heard me murmuring my distaste for his class when all of a sud-den he turned to me and said, “Gilbert! It’s not about YOU! It’s about Jesus!” I was admonished. As embar-rassed as I felt at the moment, I knew he was right. I can laugh about this now, but this proved to be a turn-ing point for me. John the Baptist had the right attitude all along to say, “the one who is coming after me, [his] sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.” As charis-matic and effective as John was, he knew that he was only the precursor of the One, the Messiah, who would bring salvation and the Holy Spirit. A classmate of mine, helping me with my nervousness at delivering homilies said to me, “When you look at the parishioners, remember that you love them. You are preaching to someone you love.” These words helped me to take that nervous energy and move it away from my self-consciousness and toward the people God had placed before me. “Come Holy Spirit, Come Lord Je-sus…” has become my prayer whenever nervousness emerges. This Third Sunday of Advent we take a respite from the penitential tone of the last two Sundays and remember the Joy that Jesus brings when we give Him Lordship over our lives. John never forgot to point everyone he encountered to the One who would bring peace, healing and salvation to all. It is a joy to remember that Jesus loves us, walks with us through all things good or bad that happen in our lives. We are constantly loved and cared for by our Heavenly Father who spared nothing, not even His own Son to commune with us as His own children. This week we open our hearts to the joy of salvation in Jesus our Lord. God bless you! Fr. Gilbert

Tercer Domingo de Adviento Estimada Familia del Sagrado Corazón, Cuando yo estaba en el seminario, la clase que menos me gustaba era Homilética. Me encantó el estudio y la reflexión que implicaba la preparación de la homilía, pero fue la “actuación” real de la homilía frente a mis compañeros, el instructor de homilía y la cámara de video lo que no me gustó. No solo fue insoportable dar una homilía a compañeros de clase (posiblemente riéndose), sino que verme en video con mi instructor con comentarios continuos (y mi propia autocrítica despiadada) después fue una au-téntica tortura. No hace falta decir que no me gustó mu-cho la clase de homilética. Un día durante la clase, mi instructor debió haberme oído murmurar mi disgusto por su clase cuando, de re-pente, se volvió hacia mí y me dijo: “¡Gilbert! ¡No es sobre ti! ¡Se trata de Jesús! "Fui amonestada. Por más avergonzado que me sintí en ese momento, sabía que él tenía razón. Puedo reírme de esto ahora, pero resultó ser un punto de inflexión para mí. Juan el Bautista siempre tuvo la actitud correcta para decir, “el que viene después de mí, [su] correa de sandalia no soy digno de desatar. "Tan carismático y eficaz como era Juan, sabía que él era sólo el precursor del Uno, el Mesías, que traería la sal-vación y el Espíritu Santo. Un compañero mío, ayudándome con mi nerviosismo al pronunciar homilías, me dijo: “Cuando mires a los feli-greses, recuerda que los amas. Le está predicando a alguien a quien ama. "Estas palabras me ayudaron a tomar esa energía nerviosa y alejarla de mi timidez y acercarme a las personas que Dios había puesto delante de mí." Ven Espíritu Santo, ven Señor Jesús ... "se ha convertido en mi oración cada vez que surge el nervio-sismo. Este tercer domingo de Adviento nos tomamos un respi-ro del tono penitencial de los dos últimos domingos y recordamos la alegría que trae Jesús cuando le damos el señorío sobre nuestras vidas. Juan nunca olvidó señalar a todos los que encontraba a Aquel que traería paz, sa-nidad y salvación a todos. Es un gozo recordar que Jesús nos ama, camina con nosotros a través de todas las cosas buenas o malas que suceden en nuestras vidas. Nuestro Padre Celestial nos ama y cuida constantemente, quien no escatimó en na-da, ni siquiera a Su propio Hijo para tener comunión con nosotros como Sus propios hijos. THE WREATH Most people are surprised to find out that the tradition of the Advent Wreath is not a liturgical tradition but rather familial, home tradition. In me-dieval times, with the onset of winter

and the shortening of the hours of daylight as all of creation moves towards the Winter Solstice, families would bring wagon wheel into their homes to serve as a base for candles that would crowd out the dark-ness from their homes. In time, greens were added to bring in the scent of the evergreen pine and thus was born the tradition of the Advent Wreath for the home. As true of many traditions, both liturgical and famili-al, the desire to celebrate the Advent Wreath within the ritual space of the church, the wealth was brought into the church, and ow adorn in with evergreen boughs and four candles, denoting the Four Weeks of Advent in preparation for the Celebration of Christ-mas. We are blessed to have celebrated this tradition with a family wreath-making party, and additionally, our Gift Shop has some Advent candles for sale should you wish to continue this tradition, now established in the Church’s liturgy, to grace your home.

LA GUIRNALDA

La mayoría de la gente se sorprende al descubrir que la tradición de la Corona de Adviento no es una tradición litúrgica, sino una tradición familiar y hogareña. En me-dieval A veces, con el inicio del invierno y el acortamien-to de las horas de luz del día a medida que toda la crea-ción avanza hacia el solsticio de invierno, las familias llevaban ruedas de carromatos a sus hogares para que sirvieran de base para velas que desplazarían la oscuridad de sus hogares. Con el tiempo, se agregaron verduras para traer el aroma del pino de hoja perenne y así nació la tra-dición de la Corona de Adviento para el hogar.

Como ocurre con muchas tradiciones, tanto litúrgicas como familiares, el deseo de celebrar la Corona de Ad-viento dentro del espacio ritual de la iglesia, la riqueza se llevó a la iglesia y ahora se adornó con ramas de hoja perenne y cuatro velas, que denota las Cuatro Semanas de Adviento en preparación para la celebración de la Navi-dad.

Tenemos la suerte de haber celebrado esta tradición con una fiesta familiar para hacer coronas y, además, nuestra tienda de regalos tiene algunas velas de Adviento a la venta si desea continuar esta tradición, ahora establecida en la liturgia de la Iglesia, para adornar su hogar.
