Sacramento Kings Bus TripStonelake Master Association is partnering with the Glenbrooke Community to bring you a night out with the Sacramento Kings. Join friends and family for an exciting night of NBA basketball, and Lunar New Year Celebration, on Thursday, February 22, at 5:00 p.m. as the Kings take on the OKC Thunder. Tickets are $70 per person. This price includes your game ticket, group photos on the court after the game and bus transportation to and from the Golden 1 Center (pick-up and drop-off at the Stonelake Clubhouse).

Seating for the game will be located in Section 104, Rows R, S and T. Tickets are very limited, so don’t wait to claim yours! Please make all checks payable to Glenbrooke Community Association or call Brittany at (916) 714-1010 to pay by phone.

Open Board PositionCandidate Forms were previously mailed to the Membership for the 2018 Annual Election. There were two open positions up for election, however only one Member (Hassan Khalaf) submitted a Candidate Form. As a result, the Board appointed Hassan to one of the open positions at the January 9, 2018, Board Meeting. Welcome Hassan.

As there is still one open position, the Board will be appointing a Member to fill the vacancy at the February 2018 Open Session Board Meeting. If you are interested in joining the Board of Directors for this open three year term, please contact Management for a Candidate Form. All Candidate Forms must be returned to Management no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, February 5, 2018.

Black History Month is a holiday which is celebrated every February in the U.S. and Canada and October in the U.K. It is an important month for remembering important people, events and achievements of African diaspora. In the U.S., it is also known also as African-American History Month, but in Canada and the United Kingdom, it is known simply as Black History Month.

History of Black History MonthBlack History Month can be traced back to September of 1915. In that year, historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History—also known as the ASNLH. This organization was dedicated to researching and promoting the achievements of not only black Americans, but all prominent people of African descent. This group would go on to sponsor a National Negro History Week in 1926. The month of February was chosen because the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass are in that month.

After learning of this week dedicated to the achievements of black Americans, many communities around the country began to organize local celebrations.

Although it did not immediately catch on, over the years many different cities all across the country began to recognize Negro History Week. This continued all the way into the late 1960s when Negro History Week was transformed by the Civil Rights Movement into Black History Month. However, it wasn’t until 1976 that Black History Month would be officially recognized by the federal government. Ever since then, every American president has designated the month of February as Black History Month.

In the United Kingdom, Black History Month was first celebrated in 1987 thanks to the leadership and efforts of Akyaaba Addai-Sebo. In Canada, thanks to a motion by Jean Augustine, Canada’s House of Commons took the steps to officially recognize the achievements and struggles of black Canadians by recognizing the month of February as Black History Month. This occurred in 1995 and in 2008, the Canadian Senate officially recognized the month as Black History Month as well.

Black History Month Customs and CelebrationsAccording to Scholastic, there are a number of ways for teachers to introduce students to Black History Month and the heritage and culture of African Americans. Some of their suggestions include: sharing the poem “I, Too, Sing America” written by Langston Hughes; view the Migration Series by artist Jacob Lawrence which shows the migration of slaves from the south to the north; read the poem “A Pledge to Rescue Our Youth” by Maya Angelou; visit the Kennedy Center to learn about blues music; talk about hip-hop music and the effect it has had on not only the United States but also the world; talk about the landmark decision of Brown v. Board of Education; and teach students about the history and significance of the Civil Rights Movement.

Black History Month is also the perfect time to learn about some of the prominent and important African-Americans such as: Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, Peter Spencer, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, Frances Harper, Harriet Tubman, Harriet Wilson, Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, Scott Joplin, W.C. Handy, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Thurgood Marshall, Jesse Owens, Muddy Waters, Goose Tatum, Sammy Davis, Jr., Malcolm X, Miles Davis, Bo Diddley, Ray Charles, Martin Luther King, Jr., Colin Powell, Jesse Jackson, Angela Davis, Condoleezza Rice, James E. Clyburn, Elijah Cummings and President Barack Obama.

Pancake Breakfast and Egg HuntMark your calendars for Saturday, March 31, and plan to attend our annual Pancake Breakfast and Egg Hunt. A delicious catered breakfast will be followed by a fun-filled egg hunt for the kids and a photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny! Please remember to bring your cameras and baskets for your goodies.

Breakfast will include: pancakes (with all the toppings—butter, syrup, chocolate chips and whipped cream), scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, diced hash browns, fruit salad, juice, milk and coffee.

A small fee of just $5 per Stonelake resident, and $7 for all guests (non-residents), will be due at the time of sign-up. Sign-ups for this event will begin on March 5 and will close once full. Space is limited and will fill up quickly, so don’t put off making your family’s reservation. Please note that we are unable to accept debit/credit cards for payment.
