MISSOURI DELTA

AgBioWorks

VOLUME 1 & ISSUE 3 December, 2012

In late October the University of Tennessee held a fall field day and workshop at Color Wheel Farms near Vonore, TN. Attendees were able to get a first hand look at switch grass production and harvest as well as visit vendor booths and workshop presentations throughout the day. Workshops included educational information on different types of feedstock such as switch grass and biomass varieties of sorghum. Demonstration of equipment used to harvest switch grass were also on display from a variety of different companies. Those in attendance were able to learn more about crops which are primarily grown in the region for biomass production and also learn about sustainability and their benefits beyond bioenergy production.

The following day, tours were given at Genera Energy’s Biomass processing and storage facility as well as an open house at Dupont’s Biorefinery facility both located at the Biomass Innovation Park in Vonore. Genera Energy contracts with area farmers to grow and produce biomass from switch grass on over 5000 acres within a 50 mile radius of the facility. Genera collects data and researches different methods of handling and processing of the switch grass as it is delivered to the facility. The adjacent biorefinery, owned and operated by Dupont Cellulosic Ethanol, produces pre-commercial ethanol that is supplied back to the University of Tennessee to power their University fleet vehicles.

This scale of research, demonstration, and production are great examples of how biorenewables can be grown, processed, and used all across the United States. Projects such as these enable other regions throughout the country, such as the Missouri Bootheel, to learn and build off of the experience that is gained through the cooperation and investments of companies, universities, and USDA to build and promote bioenergy through agriculture.

MISSOURI DELTA

AgBioWorks VOLUME 1 & ISSUE 3

University of Missouri recently held their annual field day August 31st at the Jake Fisher Delta Research

Center in Portageville, Missouri. The event was filled with a variety of vendors as well as informational workshops that included topics on irrigation, weed, fertilizer, and soybean management.

This year the University included biomass/biofuels production to their list of workshops. Missouri Delta AgBioWorks along with Pete Nelson of Delta BioRenewables of Memphis, TN presented educational information regarding sweet sorghum production in the Missouri Bootheel. Sweet sorghum can be used to produce ethanol as well as a petroleum replacement in everyday products such as plastics, carpets, and paint.

The goal of Missouri Delta AgBioWorks in partnership with companies such as Delta BioRenewables is to introduce and establish crops such as sweet sorghum into existing crop rotations in Southeast Missouri. As energy crop acreage increases, the potential for processing and manufacturing becomes a reality which ultimately grows the agriculture economy as well as the economy as a whole throughout the region.
