Today’s pools have evolved into something greater than just a place for casual recreation. The advent of waterparks, filled with water features such as slides, dump buckets, and lazy rivers, entertain swimmers year round. But unlike facilities in warmer, tropical climates, pool owners in

less temperate regions need to enclose their waterparks to extend their shorter summer season.

Indoor pools have unique HVAC challenges not present in standard building construction. The facility is constantly subjected to evaporation and condensation cycles of corrosive pool water effecting occupant comfort and structural integrity of the facility. Ventilation standards require high amounts of outside delivered to the space for health concerns, and the space temperature and humidity must be maintained for an enjoyable experience.

Indoor Pool Water Chemistry Controlling Chloramines with Proper Chlorine Management

Page 11: Sabro€¦ · Sabro DH-D-DS is built to the high corrosion-resistant standards. Properly applied and maintained ensuring the equipment lasts longer for a better return on your investment

An indoor swimming pool can be the source of income, family fun and healthy exercise. When the chemistry is properly balanced, the pool water will maintain a sparklingly clear appearance, remain free of odor and protect bathers from bacteria and germs. Chlorine, the primary pool treatment process, kills the germs and destroys the harmful organic contaminants introduced into the water by bathers.

In addition to the health concerns of the occupants, improperly balanced pool water chemistry can attack the indoor pool’s HVAC system and the building’s structural components. Airborne combined chlorine compounds along with condensate form a liquid that is very corrosive

to ferrous metals and stainless steel due to chloride content and acidity. In addition, combined chlorine compounds cause eye irritation and the so called “chlorine odor” that swimmers complain about. Combined chlorine compounds have a foul, irritating odor. Free chlorine in water, in normal concentration, has no discernable odor.

A dehumidification system will remove the excess moisture from the pool enclosure but it will not eliminate the harmful chlorine compounds that cause the chlorine odor and metal corrosion. Only a comprehensive pool water chemistry program and continuous monitoring will keep your pool crystal clear and odor free.

The Importance of Pool Water Chemistry

Chlorine acts as a disinfectant that destroys harmful organisms such as bacteria, algae, fungi, viruses, etc. It also eliminates impurities that are not removed by filtration. These two processes are called sanitation and oxidation. This organic contamination must be destroyed by chlorination to avoid pungent, chlorine-like odors as well as eye and mucous membrane irritation in the pool area.

Chlorine is introduced into the pool water by injection through the main water line supplying the pool. The chlorine immediately converts to its bacterial and virus killing form called free chlorine.

How Chlorine Works

Free Chlorine

Organic Matter,

Combined Chlorines

Main Pool Water Supply Line

Automatic Chlorinator

Free chlorine has no significant vapor pressure, meaning it cannot evaporate from the water in which it dissolves and carries out its disinfecting. Free chlorine consumption takes place as it reacts with organic matter, converting it to a volatile compound called combined chlorines or chloramines.

As pool usage increases, more organic matter is introduced into the pool water and more of the free chlorine is converted to chloramines.

The swimming pool’s water treatment system automatically replenishes the free chlorine through the pool’s automated chlorinator to maintain a recommended free chlorine level, which is typically in the 1.0 to 4.0 ppm range.

Page 12: Sabro€¦ · Sabro DH-D-DS is built to the high corrosion-resistant standards. Properly applied and maintained ensuring the equipment lasts longer for a better return on your investment

Unbalanced Chlorine

If left unchecked, the chloramine concentration will grow to unacceptable levels with potentially harmful effects. The Pool-Spa Operator’s Handbook* recommends that the chloramine levels not exceed 0.3 ppm. If the level is above 0.3 ppm, the corrosion process caused by the chloramines in the air is accelerated.

You can detect a high chloramine level when you smell a chlorine odor within the pool enclosure. It is the chloramines evaporating from the pool in large quantities that gives off the chlorine smell, and not that of the free chlorine.

The only way to accurately measure the chloramine level in your pool is to use a calorimeter , which shows the quantity of free and total chlorine in the water.

Chloramine concentration is the difference between the total chlorine and free chlorine, as seen in the following formula:

= Total Chlorine — Free Chlorine1.0ppm (chloramine) = 2.5ppm (total chlorine) — 1.5ppm (free chlorine)

CombinedChlorines

The Dangers of High Combined Chlorines

The chloramines in the air can cause significant damage to anything metallic when they condense on metallic surfaces. These metal surfaces can be windows, doors and frames, ductwork and HVAC equipment.

The chloramines will condense along with moisture from the pool on cold surfaces forming a corrosive chloride-rich solution. The higher the concentration of chloramines in the air, the more corrosive the condensate will be.

Such chloride solutions form a harmful substance that will corrode metals, including stainless steel where it forms a particularly serious stress corrosion cracking problem.

Controlling Pool Water Chloramines

The ideal method of controlling chloramines below 0.2 ppm requires periodic checking. When the chloramine level exceeds 0.2 ppm, it may become necessary to use a pool water chemistry management process called shocking.

Shocking will reduce the chloramine level to zero ppm when it is done correctly. Shocking is accomplished by intentionally raising the free chlorine level in the pool to 12-15 times the level of the chloramines. For example, if the chloramine level is 1.0 ppm, you increase the free chlorine level to 12.0 ppm. This free chlorine concentration level is the “break point” level.

The Pool-Spa Operators Handbook includes tables that compare the pool size in gallons with the break point free chlorine concentration level. The table will tell you how many gallons of chlorinating agent you must add to the pool water to properly shock the pool.

Once your pool has reached the break point chlorine level, a chemical reaction occurs converting the chloramines back to free chlorine, nitrogen gas (which settles in a thin blanket over the water) and water. If the free chlorine level is not raised to 12 times the chloramine level throughout the entire pool, the break point chemical reaction will not take place.

After shocking, the free chlorine level must be lowered to a level acceptable to the local health code for bathing purposes. An additive can be applied to the water to achieve this result.

Sometimes complete shocking does not occur and the combined chlorine level rebounds quickly to unacceptable levels after the shocking. This incomplete shocking can be attributed to several causes. One of these is due to the free chlorine level not reaching 12 times the combined chlorine level in every gallon of pool water, including the water in the filter system.

It has been reported that using a fan to sweep off the blanket of nitrogen gas that forms over the pool’s surface during shocking has assisted in the shocking process.

Why is Controlling Humidity Important?

High levels of humidity will affect the comfort, as well as the health, of the occupants within an enclosure. The moisture suspended in the air will also condense on cooler surfaces such as walls and windows, adding to maintenance costs while accelerating the deterioration of building components. There is documented evidence showing where uncontrolled moisture levels have led to the deterioration of reinforced concrete structures, resulting in catastrophic consequences.

A dehumidification unit such as the Sabro Environmental Control System is the best method for removing unwanted moisture. Sabro DH-D-DS system will continually monitor the conditions of the enclosure space, outside temperature and pool water and automatically maintain the conditions to the predetermined set points.Sabro DH-D-DS will reduce operating costs by recycling the heat recovered during the dehumidification phase back to the pool water or air space.

It is also important to remember that efficient dehumidification will not take place if the air distribution system is designed improperly. Careful consideration must be given to the location of supply air ducts, the location of the air return grill, use of moisture barriers and door and window insulation values.

By combining the proven results of a DH-D-DS system along with good Installation, you can be assured of maintaining a safe and pleasant environment for many years.

Warm Room Air

Window Frame

Vapor Barriers, Windows and Frames

Moisture migration is caused when moist air in the interior of a pool structure is allowed to flow through the walls because there is no barrier or obstruction to its flow. As the outside temperature decreases, the dew point will be reached within the wall. The moisture within the migrating air will impregnate the insulation and the wall and condense within the wall structure resulting in a decrease in R value from the wet insulation and a loss of structural integrity.

Vapor barriers should be installed immediately behind the interior wall surface. The dew point must be reached on the cold side of the vapor barrier where moisture is not present. Always seal barrier joints along joints at switches and receptacles to prevent localized moisture migration.

Glass doors and windows that are exposed to outside air should have the highest R rating available. Double and triple glass panels are best, and they should be insulated or sealed in metal or vinyl clad frames wherever possible. Window frames must have thermal breaks and be sealed to adjacent walls and insulated with a non-porous insulating material.

Moisture Control

Tips on reducing condensation by controlling temperature and evaporation:

• Install glass doors and windows with the highest R rating possible.

• Use double or triple pane glass whenever possible.

• Avoid the use of absorbent deck coverings such as carpet within the pool area.

• Limit wet deck areas by installing adequate drainage and/or reducing deck over spray.

Construction tips for pool enclosures:

• Use vapor barriers on all outside walls.

• Maintain a slight negative pressure of 0.05 to 0.15 in. of water in the pool area relative to surrounding spaces to prevent moisture and chlorine odors from migrating to other areas of the building.

• Insulate around studs, not just between them, at outside walls to prevent heat migration.

• All windows and door frames must have thermal breaks.
