Task 1: Research

Begin this assignment by finding and selecting an artist to use for your work. Use the postcard (handed out in class), and/or visit the examples in the Visual Arts eGallery HERE

Look at the examples of artwork (click on the thumbnail images for larger versions) and then select ONE of the examples to help you get started.

Each of the images has the surname of the artist that made the artwork displayed. Use this name as a starting point for your research. Write this name into your sketchbook (back of book).

Using a range of searching techniques such as: Internet, books, magazines, talking to teachers, parents and friends. Find out as much information about your chosen artist as you can, but you must include the following basic information:

The artist’s name,

Place of birth,

The type of artwork they were most known for (Portraits, Landscapes, Sculpture etc).

Find as much information about your chosen artist as possible. Make written notes or type up your notes using a word processor. Save copies of images/ examples of art to your network area (make a new folder (Art/ A3 Artists)) Print this information out for your sketchbook, so that you can refer to it in class. Stick it into your sketchbook, or write it up neatly.

Name & Class: Charlotte Fieldhouse ‐ Breton Name of chosen Artists: Edward Hopper INTRODUCTION: Picture of my Artist: For this assignment I have chosen Edward Hopper to use as my chosen artist, because I like his style of artwork. I particularly liked his paintings of the seaside, the countryside and beaches. Also Edward and his paintings were mostly set around the coast of America; the paintings were specially textured with Edwards finest paint brushes. He painted realistic things, like people on there own looking out of windows. Right is a photograph of Edward Hopper in his New York studio, that I found on this website: http://www.150.si.edu/150trav/imagine/m125.htm FACTS and INFORMATION about my Artist:

He was born on July 22, 1882 and was raised in Nyack, New York and died in New York City on the 15 May, 1967 aged 84.His parents were Dutch and his dad retired at the age of 49!

Edward Hopper struggled as a young artist, his paintings were mainly based on the French art scene. The Americans did not like this style. Due to lack of success he decided to devote his artwork to America by painting pictures of towns and villages.

His paintings of gas stations, motels and hotel lobbies influenced tourists’ experiences of where they are staying.

CONCLUSION: Picture of my favorite work

by my Artist: Edward Hopper’s Paintings were unique pieces of work; he influenced tourists’ experiences when visiting a town or village which no other artist has done before. His work has inspired me to create a piece of art based on his paintings. To produce work like his I will be looking at realistic things similar to his form of art. (Right) is one of my favourite paintings by Hopper. I like this picture because it is simple but very effective and it is of the landscapes which I particularly like.
