HAMPTON FALLS | As class-room projects go, this one warmedthe heart as well as the head.
Assisted by helpful groups ofparent and teacher volunteers, stu-dents in Multi Age 3-4 classes at Lin-coln Akerman School measured, marked and snipped their waytoward creating scores of hats andscarves made ofwarm, colorfulfleece.
Mixed classroomgroups (dubbedReindeer, Elves andS n o w f l a k e s )worked on theirKindness Projectsfor about 35 min-utes or so in eachof the three class-rooms taught byL i n d s a yDuquette, DeniseJean and JaclynHaubach.
As assembly lines go, thisone worked like the well-oiled(sewing) machines lined up in oneof the three classrooms. In that par-ticular room, oak tag “patterns”were used by students to cut fleeceinto rectangles. These were broughtover to the sewing crew (whichcounted LAS Principal JudithDeshaies among their numbers).
The stitchers turned up andsewed along one long edge of eachpiece, forming a cuff, then sewedthe two shorter edges together. Oncethese stitched pieces were flippedright side out, students gathered theunseamed edge and, using a short, narrow length of fleece, snugly tiedthe gathered edge, forming a hat.
Mission accomplished, and in amost fashionable way.
In the classroom next door, long lengths of fleece were cutfrom the fabric, all generouslydonated by parents. Both endsof these soon-to-be scarveswere marked with tape placedthree inches from the edge. Stu-dents then made a series ofsnips up to the edge of the tape,
forming fringes. So coordi-
nated was this effortthat 30 scarves werecompleted before thegroups changed class-rooms for the secondround of activities.
Over in a third classroom, stu-dents could take a break from theirfabric arts, reading winter-themedbooks and creating handmade gifttags while enjoying a cup of steam-ing hot chocolate.
“Everything (from fleece to hotchocolate to candy canes) wasdonated, mostly by parents,” com-mented Jean. “Everyone was verygenerous this season.”
The project was organized by
Duquette, who had done the samelast year while a teacher at Green-land Central School. She, too, agreed that the parents “are verygenerous” with their time and mate-rials.
The completed hats and scarves, labeled with the gift tags, weredonated to Seacoast CommunityAction to be distributed to familiesin the local area as warm and wel-come gifts from LAS students (andtheir adult assistants) who careabout their community.
