What is RYLAWhat is RYLARotary Youth Leadership Academy, or RYLA, is a four-day

leadership development program targeting high school students. The purpose of RYLA is to develop personal leadership skills and an interest in serving the community; both core to Rotary International's mission.

RYLA succeeds by:• Developing leadership skills• Increasing self-confidence• Gaining exposure to a variety of issues and people• Teaching young people how to be effective servant leaders• Meeting community leaders and mentors• Making it all fun

Having a great time while making new friends with like-minded youth from across the western half of Tennessee seems to be a natural consequence of this process.

Objectives of RYLAObjectives of RYLARYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth,

and aims to:

• Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth • Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and

potential leaders • Encourage leadership of youth by youth • To publicly recognize the high qualities of many young people who

are rendering service to their communities as youth leaders

RYLA participants are also exposed to values that Rotarians deem essential for those who hold leadership roles: ethical behavior, integrity of character, and a commitment to community service.

WHY RYLA?WHY RYLA?RYLA was created because Rotarians believe in the

potential of youth and the importance of developing and investing in youth leadership. The recognition of young peoples’ potential plays a central role in improving a Rotary club’s image in the community and facilitating relationships between young people and adults.

• Rotarians mentor promising youth in their communities.• RYLA participants bring new energy to Rotarians, inspire

fresh ideas for service, increase support of projects, and help develop future Rotarians.

What Happens at RYLA?What Happens at RYLA? Students stay in APSU resident halls and eat in the food

service courts during their stay.

A variety of exciting activities directed at this age group to enhance leadership traits and provide team-building experiences will be undertaken.

There is a ceremony at the end of the program for the attendees and their families.

The program will be more than adequately chaperoned and staffed by Rotarians from our District.

Finding & Selecting Qualified StudentsFinding & Selecting Qualified StudentsGet the flyers out and publicize RYLA within the community. Look around

your own club first. There is no restriction regarding relationship to a Rotarian for this event. Qualified children and grandchildren of Rotarians are eligible. Your local high schools are the obvious place to look. If you sponsor a Boy Scout or Girl Scout troop, you will find deserving youth. Current members of an Interact club may make great candidates.

Planning demands you get going soon as your RYLA selections need to be accomplished by the end of April and forwarded to the District RYLA Committee to allow the committee to prepare as great an event as possible for these young people.

It is indeed an honor to be selected for this award and it should be promoted in that manner.

Participants should be screened competitively and selected based on merit and leadership potential. Each club can set their own parameters in this regard.

Why Your Club Should Sponsor A Why Your Club Should Sponsor A Young Adult To RYLA:Young Adult To RYLA:You may be reinforcing or even creating the core for a

new or existing Interact Club in your community. Youth with a better understanding of Rotary may tend to seek it out later on as a way to serve their communities. Interest and participation in the Youth Scholarship Ambassadorial program may be generated in this group and further the Rotary goal of world peace through understanding. And, finally, this may be the definitive moment for a developing young person. They may choose to get involved in service to others through all the good things Rotary promotes worldwide. The message of "Service Above Self" is vital for this next generation.
