I cant imagine how many peoples greatest stories, most un-believable adventures, and worst mistakes began with such an off er. A friend once told me about how vodka became the start of a trip from Russia to Ireland. He and a friend were drinking and deter-mined they ought to go to Ireland, while all of their other drinking companions assured them they wouldnt actually do it. What could be done? Th ey could not let the challenge go. Th e next day they had no choice but to set out on foot from a small town in Russia for Ireland. Th ey trudged through waist high snow and made it a few towns over even. But I am not here to tell his story.

It was a Saturday night in St. Petersburg. My friends and I had plenty of fun the night before and determined that tonight we would not stay out late. We planned to go home on the metro, which means all festivities have to wrap up be-fore midnight. If we dont make it to the metro before it closes, well then we might as well stay out a few hours longer and walk home. But tonight we were determined to be responsible.

I met up with my friend Jack and we set out to meet a small group for a few drinks at a bar on . We only had time for one drink each when we noticed the time and realized we had bet-ter head out. Our company wasnt very happy with our decision to head home so early, but we stuck to our plan. We rode the metro from to , or as we aff ectionately called it . Both Jack and I lived in the vicinity of the metro station as well as another friend of ours, Max. We emerged from the

metro station, looked around, and it was well understood that no one wanted to go home yet. We agreed to go to a bar/caf? called - to have one beer before parting for the night. It turned out to be too ambitious to just have one beer

Th e three of us sat down at a table near the entrance with our beers. We quickly noticed a group of guys at a table across the bar who had all clearly had quite a bit to drink. We could feel their testos-terone from across the room. Th ey had gotten to a stage of drunken-ness where all a man wants is ei-ther a girl or a fi ght. With no girls around, we fi gured the second may be more likely. I said to my friends:

I dont have any intentions to talk to those guys, but if we do somehow end up talking to them, lets be Canadians tonight instead of Americans

We had rarely had problems due to our nationality, but a mem-ory of the night before where two security guards would not let a friend and me into a club - was fresh in my mind. And sometimes all people want is an excuse to fi ght. Max and Jack nodded in agreement. As if on cue only a few minutes later, one of the guys passed by our table. Maxs hair, which I could best describe as scientist hair, attracted the atten-tion of the drunk passerby, and he gave into temptation and shook his hands through Maxs fl uff y, wild hair. He didnt seem to be looking for trouble, he simply couldnt re-sist Maxs hair and was overjoyed by his hair. He went outside, came back, and when later on he went outside again, he couldnt help but rustle Maxs hair again. Aft er play-ing with Maxs hair twice, he felt it was right to sit down with us and communicate by means other than hair-shaking.

said Max as we introduced ourselves. Max fancied himself a Maxim in the presence of Russians, even though based on our accents it was apparent we were not truly Russians. Our new hair enthusiast friends name was Sergey, or Seryo-ga. We all began to talk and stuck to our plan of being from Canada. We began talking about things such as the nature of the Russian soul, Dostoyevsky, and cultural diff erences between Russians and Ameri- or I meant to say Canadi-ans. Seryoga invited over a friend and they determined they ought

to teach us to drink like Russians. We put up a weak resistance as we remembered our intentions to not stay out late, but fi gured their pro-posal to have vodka would mean only one shot each. We misunder-stood, however, and ended up with a half-liter of . Our new friends taught us proper toasts:

: , , Seryoga explained, although other Russians would later tell me there wasnt re-ally a rule about it. We drank round aft er round and the vodka made us all talkative. Seyoga explained although he is an Orthodox Chris-tian and I am Protestant, it still makes us some sort of brothers. He explained the loyalty of Russians (in comparison with Canadians/American or whatever we are). He explained he would be willing to die to defend us, his new friends, and I felt very guilty for not being honest about being an American, but I also felt that if he were to fi nd out . Although alcohol has a way of getting people to make promises they would never really keep

Time fl ew, and so did the vodka. Before we knew it, we had fi nished the half liter. We thought this meant time to go, but our new friends had diff erent plans. Th ey convinced us that a second bottle was in order. One Russian mentioned to me the hockey series between Canada and the Soviet Union in 1972, and as a Canadian I was very emotional about the whole thing.

, , 17, ! I exclaimed. As someone who doesnt know much about sports, I was lucky that I like watching Russian fi lms.

I told them we are from Van-couver and we go to school there whispered Jack in passing and he explained some other stuff about our new Canadian identity. Th is wasnt ideal, however, as I know nothing about Vancouver, about being Canadian, and its hard not easy to drink vodka, speak Rus-sian, and maintain a false identity all at once. We were having fun, however, and making new friends.

Eventually Seryoga directed us to another room in the bar to sit at a table with a mysterious Alexei. We didnt know why they wanted us to sit with him, but we simply did as we were told. We felt like the nights entertainment as they sim-

ply told us to do something and we did it. We didnt understand Alexeis relationship to our new friends: he was much older than them, dressed well with slicked back black hair, and had a sort of professional air about him. He ob-served everything with his arms crossed, and every now and then two younger guys with military style haircuts in leather jackets and turtle necks would come over to Alexei. He would whisper some-thing to them and theyd go carry out his orders. For three young Canadian students, he appeared to be some sort of mob boss who was running the show. We werent sure what we had gotten ourselves into, but it did not seem good. I tried to make conversation with him and off ered him some vodka, but he turned it down and was not in a very talkative mood.

Luck never seemed to fol-low Jack. Twice when he and I were together, birds pooped on my head but never on his. Th is meant that the good luck fortune that follows from being the target of a birds waste came unevenly to me, while he found himself in tough situations more than once. It seemed every Monday morning at class I would say to him , ?. Sitting with Alexie, we didnt know what to do, so we drank. Nothing leads people to drink more than lack of anything to do. In an awkward situation at a party one can either pick at the la-bel on his beer bottle or fi nd him-self another shot of vodka. When jack was pouring juice to go with our vodka, he managed to knock a big glass of it onto Alexeis designer jeans. To recap, he spilled juice on the guy, who in our mind, was some sort of mob boss. , . Maybe theyll just beat us up and let us go home, we thought. Instead Alexei was very calm and did not even get mad as we frantically fetched napkins for him trying to remedy the situation.

Our friends from earlier, who seemed to disappear for a while, fi nally reappeared and decided it was time for us to dance. Th ey danced nonstop and demanded the same from us. I dont like mak-ing assumptions, but it seemed as though they must have had some cocaine or speed to help keep them going. We would stop dancing for a second, only to be urged to con-tinue. We once again felt we were simply the nights entertainment

and we wondered what happenswhen we stop dancing. Surely onecant spill on Alexei without conse-quences

Eventually someone made adecision that it was time to go an-other bar. We fi gured we would be excluded from this and could head home, but we once again werewrong. Th e next bar was nearby,a place called . Th e average age at the bar seemedto be at least 10 years older than at . Th e place was decorated in all sorts of Soviet posters and I sat down next to a copy of DasCapital.

We once again sat with Alex-ei, who for some reason trustedus still aft er already spilling on him once. We agreed on beers and grenki for everyone and someone went off to get it. Our anticipation that something bad awaited us became confu-sion about why we were there at all. No one really talked to the three of us and Seryoga wasnowhere to be found. Maxs hair has lost its appeal, it seems.Jack, Max, and I decided we should just quickly fi nish our beers, say goodbye, and leave. We decided if we act abruptly and quickly no one would have time to react and make us drink more vodka or dance. We dis-missed ourselves, shook hands and headed out. On the way out I said goodbye to Seryoga, whowas outside having a cigarettepreoccupied with someone else.I would have liked to see him again, but some drunk friend-ships are only meant to last one night.

Th e whole thing felt like some sort of weird dream as weparted ways in the cold St. Pe-tersburg dawn. It turned out that they hadnt been planning anything bad for us, but when we all checked how much cash we had left in our wallets, we all were out of money. We realized we had simply been paying fortheir drinks the whole night. As it was on the way home for me,I would pass - almost every night I went out in St. Pe-tersburg, and from that night on, I always thought in the back of my mind that I maybe would run into Seryoga outside smoking a ciga-rette, and it would be time for me to be a Canadian, drink vodka, dance, and hang out with Alexeiagain.

My Trip to RussiaBy Neal Hopton, Denver

? a man with a quizzical look shouted to us, as we were running around .

    , ! we shouted back.

Th e man nodded his head as if understanding, though what we were doing didnt seem to have made any more sense to

him. As he stood looking on, he continued to watch as we prac-ticed lacrosse on a fairly cold day in October, in the city of St. Petersburg, Russia. We nor-mally had our practices in the city parks, and throwing around our white lacrosse balls, catch-ing them with strange sticks, and being outfi tted in funny looking helmets and pads always drew a crowd of interested Russians.

Th ough it felt odd at the time, playing lacrosse with the St. Pe-tersburg city lacrosse team, Th e White Knights, was one of the many unexpected and unfor-gettable experiences I had while studying abroad in St. Peters-burg, Russia, this past fall. I went abroad simply because I needed the university credits for my Rus-sian language degree. However, my time there will long be one

of the greatest and most memo-rable experiences of my life.

    My apartment was on Vas-ileostrovsky Island, one of the several islands that make up the beautiful city of St. Petersburg. As I went to St. Petersburg State University, or , which was about a two hour walk from where I lived, I oft en took the metro or the bus in the mornings to class. Th is was always a treat;

for undoubtedly the best singleaspect of my time in Russia was,of course, meeting Russians. Th esort of Russians one could meeton the bus was always remark-able; one morning it would be Russian students my own age, of whom I could develop a rapport with simply aft er they realized I was American. Other days itwould be the conductors them-selves. Once I simply made a few

  • 3 7comments of small talk to one conductor, and the rest of the trip he kept coming over to me, chatting and laughing in a way that would make an onlooker think this conductor and I were longtime friends such is the willingness of Russians to fi nd a similar soul. One of my personal favorite times was when I and two other Russians assisted an extremely tired businessman in simply standing up on the bus, as he kept falling asleep and almost falling over. None of us knew each other. Yet I couldnt help admire what seemed like the at-titude of all Russians, to lend a hand whenever needed; that life itself was a team sport, and ev-eryone needs to pitch in.

Th e similarities of Russians and Americans would even fol-low me home at night, when I would return everyday to my Russian Host Family. Walking into our apartment, throwing my books and bag down aft er a long day of school, I would oft en have my two host sisters, Sonya, 9, and Sasha, 10, come quickly into my room and want to watch cartoons on my lap-top. Th ey had their own TVs and iphones they could use, but it was always fun for them to invade my room and force me to watch their kid shows with them. Th ough I usually feigned boredom, I always found my-self enjoying the time spent sitting there with them, just

doing something mundane like watching TV. We could barely communicate, and yet it quite oft en felt like as much of a sib-ling relationship as the one I have with my own brothers.

Such interactions were not something I was expecting when I went to Russia. Th e ste-reotypes I had were the stereo-types that followed me from the U. S. While preparing to travel to Russia, I cant even count how many friends, relatives, and ac-quaintances would go on to tell me that Russia was an extremely dangerous place, and I needed to be careful and watch my money when I went out. Others would

tell me that Russians were mean, and it would be diffi cult to make friends. And perhaps the most common stereotype I heard was that people in Russia would hate me, simply because I was Ameri-can.

Th ankfully, such stereotypes taught me more about Americans then they did about Russians. For one, I traveled extensively in Russia. From St. Petersburg, to Moscow, to Kazan, and even to a little Dacha my friends and I rented one weekend, we over and over again met friendly Rus-sians. Th ey were always eager to talk, be it about politics, weather, good times and bad, or simply

their work.Th e idea that it would be diffi -

cult to make friends was perhaps one of the most foolish stereo-types that I had heard while in the U. S. Within days of arriving in St. Petersburg, I had friends wanting to see movies, go to bars, and play lacrosse. I even had a slight sus-picion that some of the Russians on our mostly American lacrosse team had joined simply to meet, chat, and hang out with more Americans, and my time in Rus-sia was certainly the better for it a fact of which soundly illustrates the foolishness of the idea that Russians would hate me for being American. Th ough I knew Amer-

icans had stereotypes of Russians, the idea that I would be dislikedbecause of the country I camefrom was perhaps, regrettably, the one I gave the most credenceto. Yet, this could not have beenmore wrong. It was interesting to see that though some Russians I would meet would be extremely nationalistic, and very much at odds with American foreign pol-icy, would be more than happy to socialize, hang out, and be friends with me, an American. It was al-ways furthermore interesting tosee how much more eager many Russians would be to social-ize, because of the fact that I wasAmerican. Th ey would be eagerto hear about American culture, society, politics, and opinions, and having such intercultural discussions with Russians gaveme some of my most rewarding experiences there.

Having left Russia in late De-cember of 2014, it was only amatter of days before I wantedto return. Leaving my family in the U.S for so long was sad, butthe knowledge that I would see them again made it easy enough.Leaving Russia though was evenharder; for I knew once I left my Russian friends, and especially my Russian Host Family, therewas a likely chance I would nev-er see any of them again. Despitethat, I will always remember andbe grateful for the time I spent there, and will certainly return if ever given the opportunity.

THE BENEFITS OF USING A PROFESSIONAL REALTOR

Youll experience a wide va-riety of benefi ts when you hire a real estate professional. Success-fully selling a property is a com-plicated exercise, and realtors have the experience, resources and contacts to complete your sale quickly and smoothly.

PricingA REALTOR will help you de-

termine the selling price of your property at a level that accurately refl ects its value in current mar-ket conditions and will not cost you missed opportunities.Marketing

A REALTOR will have many useful suggestions on ways to improve the marketability of your property, including cos-metic repairs and other items that will create a favorable im-pression among buyers. Your property will enjoy a wider ex-posure among buyers when you use a REALTOR. In addition to using fl yers and organizing open house days, a REALTORs extensive contact list of former clients, newly qualifi ed buyers and other industry profession-als can signifi cantly reduce the

time your property is on the market.

A REALTOR will also allow you to tap into a highly produc-tive and extensive industry net-work, such as a Multiple Listing Service or other industry mar-keting system. Advertising your property effi ciently is another area where a REALTOR can play an important role.

A REALTORs experience in deciding on the most appro-

priate type and frequency of advertising for your property can be invaluable. For example, placing too many ads can create the impression that there may be something wrong with the property or that the seller is des-perate.

    SecuritySecurity is a major consider-

ation when showing your home. By using a REALTOR, you can rest assured that all showings

    will be pre-screened and super-vised.Negotiating

When negotiating a purchase, most buyers prefer to deal witha middleperson who is objective, unemotional and professional.Buyers will oft en feel more com-fortable with a REALTOR thanwith the owner when they wantto raise issues that need resolving before making an off er.

    Monitoring, Renegotiating, Closing or Settling

A REALTOR will guide you through the minefi eld of poten-tial problems associated with the appraisal, inspection and fi nanc-ing process, including the oft en complicated escrow instructions. In addition, your agent can meet and instruct any specialists or tradespeople who may be re-quired for repairs.

    WHY LIVE IN DENVER

Why live in Denver? I asked the same question ten years ago when I moved to Denver from Russia. Th ere are several reasons why you want to make this place your home forever.

    1. Denver, Colorado is located right in the middle of the coun-try. It is pretty easy to get to other destinations from here. For peo-ple that travel a lot, it is a great place to be at.

    2. We do have four seasons but at the same time it is sunny all year round. Sun helps people to stay positive, and I think it is very important to be positive for everything in life whether it is your family or school or your job.

    3. Yet we get just enough

snow. Coming from Russia I do enjoy our Colorado snow weath-er, with beautiful snowfl akes and trees covered in snow. Neverthe-less, I like to see it melt and clear in forty eight hours, and thats what we get here in Denver.

    4. Th e views are awesome. You can look to the horizon and be dazzled with beautiful mountain views. If you catch the morning light just right, the mountains glow majestically.

    5. Denver has every major sports teams If professional sports are your thing, there are plenty of options in the Mile High City. Denver is home to all of the big four major sports teams with the Broncos, Ava-lanche, Nuggets and Rockies.

For the nontradi-tionalists, there are also two professional lacrosse teams as well.

    6. Rocky Mountain National Park Ameri-cas national parks are truly awe inspiring and are a must-see. Th e beauty of the to-pography and animals in their natural habitat bring tourists from all over the world. Rocky Mountain National Park is a few short

hours by car from Denver and can be accessed from either Estes Park or Grand Lake.

    7. A Bike Riders Dream. Th e Cherry Creek Bike Path is a 40-mile picturesque route that begins in Downtown Denver and continues into many area suburbs including, Parker, Cen-tennial and Aurora. Its a great way to get to work or just ride for recreation.

    8. Denver Nature And Science Museum. Th is fun and highly educational museum covers ev-erything from dinosaurs to the human body. It has an in house IMAX theater with rotating fi lms as well. You will also fi nd a kids zone where your little ones can experiment and play.

    9. 16th Street Mall is a great place to pass the time. Denver has a beautiful down

town pedestrian mall called 16th Street Mall. You can fi nd great restaurants, breweries, and urban wineries. You can visit gift shops or take a horse-drawn car-riage ride. Perhaps you decide to catch a movie or listen to live jazz. And if horse-drawn carriag-es are not your cup of tea, there is a free shuttle that runs the length of the 16th Street Mall.

    10. Larimer Square provides a unique atmosphere for a date. Larimer Square is an area re-claimed from Colorados His-tory. Each restaurant and shop presents a unique concept, and the lighting is beautiful.

    11. Colorado has top-shelf universities. Colorado is an in-ternational student destination. I myself came here as a student and went to school here. Th ere are great universities like Colo-rado State University, University of Denver, Colorado School of Mines and many others.

    12. Denver Art Museum. Th ere are oft en free days at the museum where entry fees are completely waived for the gener-al public. Its a great way to check out all the Denver Art Museum has to off er and take part in the

changing exhibits.13. Th ere is an Amusement

Park and Water Park in one.Elitch Gardens is distinguishedfrom most amusement parks inthat it is actually located in theheart of the city. It has the stan-dard carnival side as well as ahuge water park for tons of fun.Th ey sell season passes which are very convenient for the locals. It beats an average amusementpark like Six Flags any day of the week.

    14. Culture and weather en-courages getting outside andstaying active. Forbes Magazine recently rated Denver #6 on the Fittest Cities in the United States. Colorado is considered the fi ttest state in the United States, and it is the only state that can boastan obesity rate below 20%. With close to 300 days of sun andplenty of skiing/snowboarding,parks, trails, tennis courts, golf courses and athletic fi elds Col-orado encourages a healthy andactive lifestyle with plenty of in-expensive options.

I encourage you to fi nd time in your travel schedule to visit Denver, CO. And if you already live here, I hope you are grateful like me when waking up to those sunny mornings and majestic mountains each day.

SIX REASONS MOST FSBOS DONT SELL1. Th e sign in front of the

home For Sale By Own-er- invites any passersby to come to the front door and ask to be let inside. Nor-mally, a resident of a home would never allow the per-son to get inside, but now it is simply not helpful to say no. Th ink about family security and have in mind that real estate professionals will escort all buyers aft er they are qualifi ed.

    2. A buyer cant know ev-erything about the property by

just looking at the front of the house. Without knowing about good features a buyer might just drive by. Real estate professional will not only show the house but

explain everything they have re-searched and got material facts on the property. With their help-ful knowledge buyers can truly evaluate the home.

    3. Buyers might need fi nan-cial assistance on the property. FSBOs cant assist in deciding where to go for a home mortgage and may not understand the process. Th ey might not be able to recommend a good lender to help with fi nancing as well. Real estate professional will provide that information.

    4. FSBOs dont know normal-

ly how to write a purchase con-tract. Th ey dont feel comfortable to fi ll it in for buyers to sign. All licensees go through educational process so they can write one and not end up in court.

    5. Th e major problem-FSBOs think they are saving on com-mission. In reality they are not saving on commission because they dont take the time and the eff ort to market their own prop-erty. Real estate professionals will put the home into MLS, will extensively advertise the home, and will hold open houses. Th ey

do all the hard work from the beginning till the end and they fully deserve their commission.

    6. Th e seller has the disad-vantage of negotiating directly with the buyer. If the sellers give a buyer a lower fi gure, the buyermay later try to negotiate evenlower. With a real estate profes-sional, when the buyer wants to make an off er, the licensee will put it in writing and ask for agood-faith-deposit so that if the price off ered by the buyer is ac-ceptable, all the sellers need to do is just to sign the contract.

Make simple work of household choresTh ere are many ways to make

the job of cleaning your home a lot less daunting.

Maintaining a clean and or-derly home can sometimes be overwhelming. Homeowners juggling the responsibilities of work and family may fi nd they have little energy for everyday household chores. But home-owners can employ some simple strategies to keep their homes clean and orderly without taking up too much of their time.

Enlist a buddy. Work goes much more quickly if you have someone to help you. Make a list of all the jobs that need to be done and then split them among your cleaning helpers. Kids can get involved by taking care of the simpler tasks, such as dusting or wiping down counters.

Clean from top to bottom. Dust and dirt will settle at the lowest possible points, so do not create extra work for yourself by cleaning fl oors and other sur-faces and then dusting off shelves or cleaning cobwebs from the ceiling. Always work your way downward when cleaning your home.

Keep stray item baskets in main rooms. Items from other rooms will inadvertently gravi-tate to places where your family spends most of its time. Cleaning takes a lot longer if youre con-stantly interrupting your tasks

to put things where they belong. Instead, toss them into a catch-all basket and make your rounds to other rooms at the end of the cleaning session.

Try a chore each day. Some cleaning enthusiasts advocate performing a diff erent chore each day. Breaking cleaning down into more manageable chunks can make the task of cleaning a home a lot less daunting.

Keep cleaning items in the bathroom. Bathrooms get daily use, and they need a lot of atten-tion. Store a set of cleaning tools and cleansers in the bathroom so they will always be at the ready. Consider keeping a spray bottle of a bleach-and-water solution or mildew cleaner near the shower so you can simply spray down the walls right aft er showering.

    Multitask as much as pos-

sible. Multitasking works at the offi ce, and such an approach also can pay dividends when cleaning your home. For example, unload the dishwasher while your lunch is heating up in the microwave. Th is saves you some time and makes use of the time you would otherwise be standing around.

Do laundry daily. Laundry can quickly sneak up on you, es-pecially in a busy household. In-stead of devoting an entire day to doing laundry, try to do one full load per day. Th is will make the pile of dirty clothes much more manageable and ensure that you and your family members always have some clean clothes available.

Find a cleaning schedule that works and then stick with it, and soon you will discover that main-taining a clean and orderly home is not so diffi cult aft er all.

Simple techniques to help you relaxFinding ways to relax can

improve life at home and at the offi ce. While its not of-ten easy to fi nd time to slow down, especially for those men and women juggling the responsibilities of career and family, the following are some simple techniques that dont take much time but can have a positive impact on your day.

Take some time out from multitasking. Th e ability to multitask is a cherished commodity for parents and working professionals alike, but men and women can benefi t from periodic breaks from their everyday juggling acts. Something as simple as focusing on a single task for 30 minutes at a time, as op-posed to checking emails while preparing dinner or working on a project while answering a clients phone call, can help lower stress levels and have a lasting and calming eff ect on your nerves.

Make time to meditate every day. Studies have shown that meditation can aff ect the circuitry in the brain, positioning it to more adequately re-spond to illness and stressful situations. Meditation has the added benefi t of being a relaxing exercise, as meditation encourages people to sit with their feet on the fl oor with both eyes closed in a relaxing setting that is free of external distractions.

Walk away from your desk and couch. Its well documented that spending too much time sitting at a desk can have a negative impact on your health. In addition to elevating a persons risk of heart dis-

ease and diabetes, sitting at a desk all day long has been linked to repetitive stress injuries, obesity and back pain, each of which can contribute to stress-ful living conditions that make it diffi cult to relax. Men and women should spend at least fi ve min-utes each hour walking, whether they are getting up from their desk at work or getting off the couch at home. Doing so takes little time, but it can help to relieve stress at work and at home and improve your overall health.

Practice yoga. Yoga is another activity that can help men and women relax. Yoga involves a series of poses that helps stretch the muscles and aid their recovery from everyday aches and pains, including those that oft en result from stressful experiences or days at the offi ce.

Improve Your Yard: How to Hire a Lawn Care or

Landscape ProfessionalAccording to a recent sur-

vey by the Harris Poll with the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP), 47% of Americans wish they could hire land-scape professionals to im-prove their yards, and 67% think that professional land-scape help would allow them to have a nicer yard.

Most Americans think it is important to have a yard (83%) and to spend time out-side in the yard (75%). For those who have a yard, 90% think it is important that it is well-maintained. The major-ity of Americans (71%) also feel that it is important for their neighbors to have well-maintained yards too.

A well-kept yard can in-crease the value of your home and provide a relax-ing space to interact with friends and family. Hiring a lawn care or landscape pro-fessional can help home-owners and businesses save time, take the guesswork out of caring for a landscape, and protect the investment made in a property.

Professional lawn and landscape companies pro-vide a variety of services, in-cluding: lawn care, planting and caring for trees, mow-ing, irrigation, landscape de-sign, shrubs, and flowers, in-terior plant installation and care, building ponds and wa-ter features, building decks, patios, and outdoor living spaces, building walkways, retaining walls, pagodas and gazebos, installing holiday lighting and greenery d?cor, snow removal, pest manage-ment, and outdoor lighting.

Top concerns for home-owners when hiring a land-scape company are typically price and quality of work. So, how do you hire a high-quality and knowledgeable company that meets your needs? The NALP offers tips below to help homeowners and businesses make smart decisions when hiring a landscape professional.

Ask how long the com-pany has been in business and the experience level of its staff. Professional land-scape companies should have employees with either a secondary education in the field or several years of experience. In addition,

professional companies areoften active members in na-tional associations like the NALP or state associations. Affiliations in national as-sociations indicate that a company is interested in excellence, safety, and bestpractices. Ask the firm for a list of references and profes-sional affiliations or check its website.

Select a landscape com-pany that is licensed, ac-credited, or certified. If required by state law, the company should be licensed. This license will assure youthat the contractor is ac-countable, and that the com-pany is operating legally.Ask them if they have staff that are Landscape Industry Certified. A certified indi-vidual has proven experi-ence, skills, and knowledge. Continuing education is necessary to maintain their certification.

Ask about the companyssafety record and practices. Good companies put safety first through extensive train-ing, power equipment certi-fication, and safety meetings. NALP members participatein a safe company program called STARS.

Check their work. Visit a job in progress. Ask to see a project that will be similar to the work you want done. You want to hire a company that does good work, andreflects professionalism andintegrity. Examine the qual-ity of the job, and look tosee if the crews appearanceand job presence are accept-able.

Ask the company to pro-vide a written plan and/or contract. Prior to mak-ing any agreement, havethe landscape contractor, designer, and/or architectprepare the details in writ-ing. This plan can includethe design, specify the plant or hardscape materials to beused, list all costs, provide atime table, and explain thepayment terms.

To find NALP membercompanies and companieswith Landscape Industry Certified staff in your area, go to www.landscapeprofes-sionals.org.

    Did you know

Whey protein is oft en taken by weightlift ers who are looking to increase strength, muscle size and lean body mass, and stud-ies have shown that whey can help men and women achieve such goals. But even the most ardent exercise enthusiasts may not know what whey is. A product of cheese-making, whey is the water ele-ment of milk that separates from the curds when cheese is being made. People with milk allergies may want to avoid whey protein, as it can trigger allergic reactions. Men and women with kidney disease also should consult with their physicians before taking any protein powders. When bodybuilders take whey protein, they typically do so in the form of protein shakes, which help nourish the body aft er a workout

Keep kids engaged through summer vacation

Summer Slide is a term parents may hear at the end of the school year. No, it doesnt have anything to do with playground activi-ties. Rather, sum-mer slide refers to knowledge gained during the school year that may be lost over the duration of summer break.

Th e National Summer Learning Association says many students lose about two months of grade-level equivalency in math computation skills over the summer. Students tend to score lower on standardized tests aft er summer vacation than they do when the same tests are taken at the onset of summer.

Minds left to sit idle can haunt children when its time to return to the classroom. But parents who engage kids throughout the summer and reinforce educationally sound activities can prevent summer slide.

Make vacations educational. Visit a locale kids have studied in class and explore its culture and traditions.

Off er plenty of reading materials. Reading can

expand childrens minds and help them build and maintain their vocabulary.

Ask teachers for work packets. Students canstay on top of their studies by doing some light schoolwork throughout the summer. Th is can re-inforce lessons kids have already learned and keep their minds sharp.

Purchase a journal. Encourage kids to writeabout their summer adventures in a journal.Chances are their teachers will ask about summervacations and may require an essay when students return to school.

How to clean your grill during summer party season

Grilling season has arrived, and amateur grillmasters every-where are gearing up for another summer of backyard barbecues and family dinners outside un-der the summer sun. But once you fi re up that grill and cook your fi rst hot dog of the season, your work is not quite done. Cleaning the grill aft er you have eaten makes it easier to prolong the life of your grill and ensure the foods you eat are safe to con-sume.

Turn the grill off . Unless you own a charcoal grill, chances are your grill has dials that gov-ern how hot the grill gets when cooking. Make sure these dials are turned to the off position be-fore you start cleaning. If yours

is a gas grill, disconnect the gas while wearing gloves to reduce your risk of accident or injury.

Use the residual heat to make cleaning easier. Th e sooner you start cleaning the grill aft er you cook, the easier it might be to make the cooking surfaces spar-kle. Th ats because the residual heat can make it easier to remove any left over buildup from barbe-cue sauce or seasoning that stuck to the grill aft er you removed your food.

Use a wire brush to clean the cooking grates. Wire brushes are ideal for cleaning cooking grates. Such brushes can quickly re-move grease and food particles, saving grill owners the trouble of scrubbing away with traditional

sponges. Once the wire brushs work is done, you can then cleanthe grill with a soapy sponge.

Remove food that fell into the well. Food inevitably fallsinto the well of a grill no matter how skilled a grillmaster might be. If left to fester in the well, such foods can pose a safety risk and promote the growth of bac-teria.

Clean the remaining areas of the grill. Marinade, sauce orcondiments may fi nd their way onto areas of your grill, and if left unattended, such substances canmake a grill very dirty over time. Remove these substances aft er each barbecue to keep your grilllooking new through the sum-mer.

Gardening pointers for novicesPeople have many reasons

for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh pro-duce at the ready is a great ben-efi t of having a home garden, which also allows homeown-ers to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables.

Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their fi rst vegetable gardens, and such gar-deners can benefi t by starting

small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing condi-tions.

Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cu-cumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden.

Some gardeners prefer tostart plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with re-gard to maintenance and plant-ing. When just starting out, ex-periment with small plants thatare established and already havea good root system.

Consult with your local gar-dening center for more sug-gestions, such as which soilamendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth.

How to handle an old 401(k)

Upon making the transition to a new job or retiring, many people are unsure about what to do with their 401(k) or other retirement plans linked to their employer. Handling this tran-sition can be costly, and many men and women might benefi t from the advice of a professional fi nancial advisor to help them navigate these waters without breaking the bank.

Some men and women may think theyre forced to cash out their retirement accounts when moving on to new companies. But, depending on a persons age, thats a potentially costly option that can incur heavy penalties. Fortunately, cashing out is not the only option men and wom-en have as they try to fi gure out what to do with their retirement accounts aft er retiring or moving on to new companies.

Keep the money with your former employer

Some employers allow for-mer employers to keep their re-tirement savings in their plans. Th is allows men and women to avoid early withdrawal penalties and lets them continue to defer paying taxes on retirement sav-ings accounts until they reach retirement age and need to start withdrawing money. Another benefi t to keeping money in an employer retirement plan even aft er you leave the company is it protects you if there are rollover restrictions governing any addi-tional accounts you might have transferred the money into.

Employers who do allow for-mer employees to keep their money in retirement plans likely included certain language in those plans that govern how the account is managed aft er em-ployees leave the company. For example, former employees may

no longer be able to contribute to the plan or take out plan loans. In addition, when the time comes to withdraw money, you may or may not be allowed to make par-tial withdrawals from accounts linked to former employers. Read the fi ne print to determine if keeping the plan with a former employer makes the most sense for you.

Rollover into your new em-ployers retirement plan

Some people have the op-tion to rollover a 401(k) from a previous employer into their new employers plan. But not all companies allow this. If you are allowed to do so, this can make the transition that much easier while still allowing tax-deferred growth on your assets. In addi-tion, if you can rollover into your new employers plan, you may be allowed to take out loans based on the amount of your combined plan instead of just loans against new contributions. Rollover and plan loan eligibility should be confi rmed with your new em-ployer.

Before rolling over money into your new employers plan, confi rm your investment options under the new plan. If they pale in comparison to an IRA, you might want to rollover your re-tirement assets into an IRA that off ers more investment options.

Rollover into an IRAMany men and women look

to rollover an old 401(k) into an IRA, as traditional and Roth IRAs may off er a wider variety of investment options than a previ-ous or current employers retire-ment plan. Taxes diff er depend-ing on which type of IRA you choose to roll your funds into, so discuss your IRA options with your fi nancial advisor to deter-mine if this is the best way to go.
