Rush Art Competition 2017
Winners List
Section 1 Open Award Medium Price
Winner
108 Phillip Rolton Sand Hills of Double
Island Point
Pen & wash $3,000
Judges Comments:
Dr Christine Kirkegard – The work is technically convincing and there is a strong
sense of the landscape carefully observed. The handling of interludes of negative
space in the lace-like fringe of vegetation skirting the horizon is particularly sensitive.
Nicole Voevodin-Cash – There is something authentic about this work. It has the
ability to draw you in to look at the detail of a large landscape via its colour and
composition. The skyline in particular with its use of negative spaces creates a
beautiful lace-like edge in the sky. A well observed scene, detailed and knowledgeable
of medium and view.
Highly Commended

knowledge of the glazing to create an Asian inspired, organic lacquer vase style work.

308 Dennis Forshaw Crossing Boarders Porcelain $600
Judges Comments:
Dr Christine Kirkegard – This 3 dimensional form presents a beautiful silhouette.
Technically refined it also exhibits great delicacy in the silken colourations of glazing.
Nicole Voevodin-Cash – Silk-like glazing veil of colour of crystal explosions on a
delicate and refined vessel. Great understanding of the symbiosis of material, medium
and marking from the maker.
Encouragement Award
303 Phil Willy Portrait of a Girl Ceramic $360
Section 4 Acrylic/Oil Award
Winner
466 Lou Gatliff Beth Oil $750
Judges Comments:
Dr Christine Kirkegard – In this difficult genre there is good handling of lost and
found and variability of edges particularly in the head. Here the artist preserves the
distinct brushstroke while also imparting a soft and atmospheric focus through careful
transitions of value.
Nicole Voevodin-Cash – This work feels real – somber & thoughtful, as the figure
depicts. Colour of edging of lines gives this a slightly blurred affect and focus’ the eye
on the portrait as the rest falls away. Skilful and strong brushstrokes are evident in this
successful work.

Winner
544 Julie Mengel Temperance Mixed media $280
Judges Comments:
Dr Christine Kirkegard – The small abstraction resonates with an atmospheric
beauty. Juxtapositioning of collaged layering gives a geometric structuring which
strengthens the nebulous marks of form and space in this landscape.
Nicole Voevodin-Cash – The simple presentation of this work does not distract from
the atmospheric quality generated through the layering of colours – great use of the
medium.

Section 6 Budget Steel Miniature Award
Winner
616 Kerrie Atkins Bush Study Gouache $200
Judges Comments:
Dr Christine Kirkegard – Strong geometric planar rhythms distinguish this well
composed miniature landscape. Organic and a limited colour harmony soften and
provide a counterfoil to sharper linear edges. The medium of gouache also gives a
lovely matt quality to the work.
Nicole Voevodin-Cash – Bravo! The scale, colour and medium of this work are what
make it stand out!! Great composition and colour palette.

614 Margie Pocknee Flowers Watercolour $60
Section 7 Pastel Award
Winner
704 Chris Blake Bush Bridge to
Gilgandra
Pastel $695
Judges Comments:
Dr Christine Kirkegard – There is confident broad handling and variability of the
graphic mark in this pastel work. A good understanding of the complexity of colour as
light is combined with a strong composition.
Nicole Voevodin-Cash – An impressionistic understanding of light – playing on the
gradational tones of colour. This is explosive to the eye and sophisticated medium
use. It is thoughtful and playful- a joy to view.
Highly Commended
718 Gail Thomas Forever Friends Pastel $800
Commended
711 Chris Baldock Myuna Bay NSW Pastel $350
Section 8 Watercolour Award
Winner
810 Peter Morrison Dunes Watercolour $400
Judges Comments:
Dr Christine Kirkegard – There is an understanding of the intrinsic qualities of the
watercolour medium in this work. For example, each variable calligraphic stroke is an
economic and integral unit of the whole. Application of wet in wet and wet over dry
gives range of technique in a well-structured composition.
Nicole Voevodin-Cash – This is a simple yet sophisticated work – skilful at layering,
lines and brush strokes, with the masterful stroke of RED (colour) as the focal point in
the landscape.

903 Evelyn Miller Gympie Summer Oil $750
Judges Comments:
Dr Christine Kirkegard – Great use of strong and sensitive brush strokes. The
juxtaposition of the trees and their framing as a work gives pleasure to the eye and
supports the depth of colour knowledge and use.
Nicole Voevodin-Cash – There is a developing understanding of balancing colour
saturation with coloured greys or neutrals in this painting. Variation of brushstroke
and warm and cool juxtapositions of hue also add strength to this work.
