In recent years, there is a noticeable movement of Russian,

Ukrainian and Belarusian designers contributing to development

and establishment of the creative industry in their countries,

with interior and graphic design studios, independent product

designers and local furniture, glass & porcelain brands. Only few

of them are recognized throughout Europe for their innovative,

eclectic spirit and functional projects. Unfortunately, there are

neither strong rooted dialogue and cooperation between design

and national production, nor the support of emerging industries

in the process of consolidation and opening to international

market, despite the fact that Russia, Ukraine and Belarus have

available materials, resources and export/import facilities.

If furniture and accessories come from Italy and France, glass

from Austria, cars and bathroom suites from Germany, high -

tech design and sports articles from the United States and Asia…

What has RUB design been known for and what prospects can

it have in the future? Nowadays, Russia is mainly considered

Introduction

as the leading raw materials exporter and one of the biggest

consumption market. Are there other sectors of economy

and creative industry that can drive people’s motivation

for national pride? Could it be “design” such an engine?

Asking these questions, it’s important to understand the

origins of national design. It all began with the industrial

and cultural revolution in the XVII century led by Peter The

Great who tried to replace the traditional medieval social

and political system with another one based on modern

scientific and Europe-oriented approach. He ordered to

translate the Dutch book about shipbuilding by Carel Allard

to create the imperial navy, and established the first Russian

newspaper “Vedomosti” for which the civil print different

from the former Church Slavonic graphic style was developed.

The industrial reforms required the skilled personnel and,

therefore, a school for applied and decorative art was

founded in Moscow in 1825. Later it was renamed to

Stroganov School for Technical Drawing which served as

foundation for many design schools in Russia. Stroganov

Moscow State Academy of Arts and Industry is one of them.

In 1829 the first industrial exhibition was open in St. Petersburg, later

it was held in various Russian cities with the increasingly growing

assortment of goods. In 1896 the largest industrial exhibition was

run in Nizhny Novgorod where mainly the articles of the applied

arts and crafts and machine-building products were presented.

The Russian Empire also participated in the international fairs.

From the middle of the XIX century and up to 1914, Russia came

Page 5: Rub Design Book

up to the European economical level. In art and architecture the

most dominant direction was Art nouveau style (called “Modern”)

with the national ornamental and floral motifs, especially,

in book production, advertisements, magazines and labels.

The approaches and revolutionary concepts of avant-

garde, constructivism styles with the simplification of form

and use of geometry, the revitalized interest in traditional

folk art particularly influenced the forming of RUB design.

In 1920 “Vkhutemas” (Higher Art and Technical Studios) was

founded in Moscow. The workshops were established by a decree

of Vladimir Lenin with the intentions to prepare master artists

of the highest qualifications for industry like a center of the

Russian avant-garde movement. In 1927 it was reorganized in

“Vkhutein” (Higher Art and Technical Institute) where Vladimir

Tatlin, one of the most famous figures of Post-Revolutionary

Art, worked. He created the three-dimensional constructions

made of wood and metal recalling contemporary design

installations. The interesting fact that he began his art career as

an icon painter as many Russian avant-garde artists who were

inspired by traditional art and cultural heritage. The Institute

was dissolved in 1930 after political and internal pressures.

The Soviet government saw the need to use mass-media,

monumental architecture and visual art in the spread of

the Communist ideology that was expressed in thousands

of political posters, Stalin’s empire style buildings

and social realism movement. As a result, design and

branding of day-to-day Soviet items were subordinated

both to an aesthetic stand point and a propaganda tool.

The organisation of the national fairs and participation in the

international industrial exhibitions also took place in the USSR.

One of the most enduring and recognisable symbols of the Soviet

Union is the “Worker and Kolkhoz Woman” statue created by

Vera Mukhina for the 1937 international exhibition held in Paris.

In a theoretically non-consumerist and non-materialist society

the Soviet designers chose the national pride as their concept

that is why historic events and national achievements often

featured in packaging, public spaces and festive decoration.

One of the most significant examples is the Soviet metro

system opened in 1935 which was an enormous achievement

both in construction and interior design. But its luxurious

decoration was not a Soviet standard feature because the

transportation and product design remained rather faceless.

The movement, not the style, mattered. The aeronautical

design became a jewel in the crown after the first artificial

satellite was launched and the first man travelled into space.

Fantasy had an important role in Soviet design. Challenged to

think beyond boundaries, architects, engineers and artists had

the chance to give free reign to their imaginations and dreams.

‘We were born to turn fairy tales into reality,’ – with these words

the “March of the Aviators’ (1923) started which was sung at

parades across the country. While many design ideas were realised,

some only came close. The 1932 was the official approval of the

Socialist Realism school that left the avant-garde out of favour.

As a result, having received the poor design of consumer goods,

in 1962 in Moscow the Soviet government established the

VNIITE (USSR Research Institute of Industrial Design) which was

divided into nine key divisions. Six of those (design theory, socio-

economic research, product testing, ergonomics, decorative materials

Page 6: Rub Design Book

and finishes, information and documentation) sought to provide

research discoveries to designers working throughout the USSR.

The other three (interior and car design, machine tools, graphics and

packaging) were devoted to the most important design projects.

This was part of a wider Soviet governmental program to

improve design standards, further demonstrated by the

ruling requiring Soviet manufacturers to use trademarks

on their products. Nonetheless, the redesign of “non-

essential goods” had a low priority in an economy geared

to satisfying the needs of the military and heavy industry.

From 1964 VNIITE published the “Technical Aesthetics” design

journal with the information supplement on industrial design abroad

included. However, the most important in terms of external relations

was the link with ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial

Design), which VNIITE became an institutional member of in 1969.

Then postmodernism arrived with the falling of the Berlin Wall, and

the destruction of the Soviet Union, the establishment of the Russian

Federation, the Republics of Ukraine and Belarus that determined

the new artistic and design system of the independent countries.

Over the years RUB design turned into fresh phenomenon, without

the obligatory soviet iconography and adopted an international

outlook, but it has retained its cultural matrix. The new generation

of RUB designers seems interested in old stories, they are constantly

in search of the personality, trying to understand their role

within the international design scene, and how to promote and

make their products competitive, and create true innovations.

Now the design in RUB countries is to become a tool for

business promotion, brand differentiation and cultural

identity to connect contemporary consumer society with

the national pride and respect to the nature and to a

human being talented in any sphere of creative activities.

Taking into account all the above-mentioned, we decided to

launch RUB design community to unite the neighbour countries

with common historical background, mental, language and

artistic similarities. We believe that true talents and hard

working professionals are able to break into the world design

scene rubbing all the boundaries.

Where did your passion for design come from? The interest for art came from my childhood when I used to visit many museums and exhibitions with my family and started to take drawing lessons. In teenage years it has grown into love for designing, making and creating. I`ve been absolutely passionate for the beauty and complexity of 3D objects and this craving still remains. What’s your design philosophy? Where do you find the inspiration for your projects? In my opinion it`s very important to look deeper into things, make creative research and try to find the core of a subject. Nature is always the best inexhaustible source of inspiration for me, then comes art and architecture. What famous designers would you like to work with and why? Ingo Maurer is a key figure in lightning design and it would be fantastic working with him. Also I love Olafur Eliasson’s works, but I`m not quite sure that it`s ever possible to participate in his projects in any way. If it is so, that would be great. Please define your expectations of publication in the “RUB DESIGN BOOK”. I expect my concept works to be seen by leading European manufacturers. And I hope they`d see my creative potential in a way that I can design something new and exciting that would manage their needs.
