Strainer basket

Designed for maximum flow rate and minimumpressure drop, and the efficient collection offoreign matter. Baskets can be easily removed forcleaning without the use of tools.

Sealing gaskets

Gaskets can be supplied in material to suit mostproducts handled.

Cap fastening

The strainer cap can be easily and quicklyremoved by releasing the stirrup clamp.

Special finish

In addition to strainer bodies being available indifferent materials and styles, special external andinternal finishes are available.

Duty

OPERATION

Filter cycle

Liquid passes into thestrainer body, up into thefilter element, through thefiltered liquid chamber andon to the strainer outlet.

Particle matter, larger thanthe screen aperture size, iscollected on the inside ofthe strainer element untilthe differential pressure increases toapproximately 60kPa. This differentialpressure is shown on the gauge mounted in theinstrument panel. When the set differentialpressure is reached, the strainer will commencethe backwash cycle automatically.

Filtering will continue at a slightly reducedflowrate during the backwash cycle.

Backwash cycle

The strainer backwash cycle has been designedto provide flexibility of backwash duration andcan be regulated to give minimum backwashtime consistent with thorough cleaning.

When the backwash cycle is activated, thebackwash motor starts, the scouring armscommence rotating and the backwash drainvalve opens. Filtered water then flows backunder full system pressure through the screeninto the scouring arm apertures, releasing the

contaminant from the inner screen surface.The fluid and the contaminant then flow downthe scour arm tube, into the backwash chamberand through the outlet valve.

The differential pressure is reduced to normalafter one revolution of the scouring arms (20seconds). The unit will return to the filtercycle automatically.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Low Maintenance

The Automatic Backwash facility negatesmanual cleaning of the strainer elementsnormally associated with standard basket or ‘Y’type strainer, thereby reducing manpowerrequirement.

Continous Filtration

The Ulbrec Auto Backwash Strainer producescontinuous filtration of the process flow, even

during the backwash cycle. Although some lossof flow occurs, it would normally be only 5-10%, dependant upon process conditions (ref.BACKWASHING for further details).

The strainer offers a wide and practical rangeof filtration screen sizes for the majority ofstrainer applications. Screens can vary fromvery large apertures, 25mm, to very smallapertures, 150 microns. Finer aperture sizesare considered impractical in automaticbackwash units due to rapid clogging, andhence excessive backwashing and consequenthigh backwash losses. Finer screen aperturesare also inefficient in the filtration process asthey reduce the available open area of thescreen, thereby increasing differentialpressure and, in the backwashing process,contaminants would be exceptionally difficultto release from the very small apertures.This would cause cumulative blocking andextended periods of shutdown for manualcleaning and maintenance.

Large filtration area

The Ulbrec ‘ABW’ Auto Backwash strainersare sized with large stainless steel elements tominimise initial differential pressure. Theaverage screen size is approximately fifteentimes the standard connection pipe cross-sectional area.

This large filtration area increases the timeinterval between backwash cycles, therebydecreasing the nett process fluid losses.

CONSTRUCTION

The Ulbrec Automatic Backwash Strainerconsists of the following major componentassemblies:

Strainer body

Fabricated carbon steel, (standard) orstainless steel (optional)

The strainer body consists of a verticalcylindrical shell with inline flanged inlet andoutlet connections, cover, and backwash drainconnection. All wetted parts are finishedwith epoxy resin coating (carbon steel only).The external coating comprises a blue oxidezinc base primer; this provides the base forfinish coating to customer’s colourrequirements. (Optional external finish canbe provided to customer specification).

Strainer element

Fabricated perforated stainless steel.Optional fine S.S. mesh or wedgewire

available if required.

The strainer element is a vertical cylindricalscreen that is located in the diaphragm of thestrainer body against an ‘O’ ring seal. Thetop of the screen is fitted with a plate andbearing to locate the scour arm shaft.

Control panel

Polycarbonate waterproof enclosure.

The control panel is mounted on the front ofthe strainer body near the top cover. Itcontains a differential pressure gauge andswitch, programmable logic controller,manual backwash button, alarm light andnormal operation light. Optional facility forvoltage free contacts are available.

Backwash mechanism

Fabricated stainless steel scour arm and shaftwith electric gearmotor and solenoid valve.

The backwash mechanism comprises a centraltube fitted with scouring arms extending tothe internal diameter of the strainer element.This assembly is rotated by the electricgearmotor drive fitted to the underside ofthe strainer body. The backwash drain isfitted with a solenoid valve.

Backwashing

The backwashing mechanism of theseStrainers offer strength and reliability offunction combined with high efficiency. Thissimple system of backflushing is ideal forwater or seawater with hard particlecontaminants. For other applications orwhere contaminant may be sticky or fibrous,one of the many options available such aswiper or brush assemblies, may be a moresuitable alternative, and should be discussedwith Ulbrich Products or theirRepresentative.

The backwash control system offers flexibilityof the backwash cycle by having an adjustabledifferential pressure switch in addition to anadjustable backwash cycle P.L.C. Standardactivation of backwashing is by differentialpressure but can be provided with timecontrol unit if required.

The backwash drain is sized to suit mostapplications. However, the size and type ofthe contaminant will determine the specificapplication requirement. The size of thebackwash drain, together with the systempressure, will determine the backwash losses.

APPLICATIONS

In order to reduce the contaminant toacceptable levels, treatment in a processsystem or for acceptable disposal of wastewater, Ulbrec Auto Backwash Strainersare designed for use in water and somechemical applications.

These units are ideally suited to thefollowing applications:

• Prefilters in water treatment systems forthe production of potable water.

• Continuous process cleaning systemswhere contaminants can vary from dirtand grit to bottle tops and labels,cigarette butts and general consumerwaste materials.

• Primary flow filters in electrochlorination systems for Power Stations.

• Insurance filters for the protection ofdownstream equipment andinstrumentation in fresh water and seawater applications.

• Effluent treatment system filters for thereduction of solid and fibrouscontaminants in process water andsewerage effluents.

• Cooling water strainers in powerstations, drawing water from fresh waterstreams/rivers and seawater containinghigh levels of dirt, sand and organicvegetable matter.

The standard Strainers are unsuitable forsuction duty applications unless theyoperate with positive up stream pressure.

Goliath Veelok ClosureThe Goliath Veelok closure features a single bolt quick action with a pivot pin for ease of operation. The back of the flanges have a machined taper and the clamps have a corresponding internal taper. As the clamp is closed tight, the flanges are drawn together.

Swing bolt closure bag housings are userfriendly housing for heavy duty filtrationapplications where a filter bag requires regularchange out. The internal support basket seamsare continuously butt welded and have a domebase. Each unit is supplied with a bag holddown ring.

Direct entry bag filters have a crush seal closureplate for optimum sealing allowing highefficiency filtration. The 180o swept bend on thetop cover is designed to provide a smooth flowpath, directly into the filter bag. Clean liquidflows out of a convex dished end. The unit iseasy to disassemble, so the filter can be cleanedin place.
