Good morning, my name is Andrew Beare and I am Mr.Arturo Beare's youngest son who was LB years old whenthe accident occurred.

Wednesday, May l_0th., IgTZ,was a normal Autumn day inMontevideo, only a bit too warm, no storm was brewing inthe area, but as normal during this period, it was veryhumid.

I recall sitting at home that evening with my parents, aswe did normally after work chattingr.about differentthings. At a ,c¿rtain ,stage my. father mentioned that hewanted an early dinner, as the next morning he had to rise

early as the "Royston Grange,, was arriving from BuenosAires on a northboud voyage.

That night a heavy fog formed over the river and at dawnthe visibiliW ryas extremely reduced.

At around 05:00arn the phone rang and we all woke up, itwas a call from a man called ,,Simonetti,, who was the"look-out" at the control tower of the port of Montevideo,who was always in touch with my dad, before the arrivalof the different Houlder ships that called into Montevideo.

After speaking very briefly with this man, my fatherturned to my mother and exclaimed ,,Oh my God.... there istrouble in the river and all I hope is that the Royston is onthis side of the incident so we can receive it today as allthe load is arranged".

When he cut off, he explained that the look_out_man, hadtold him that there had been an accident and that alr hecould see was an orange glow on the horizon, but he hadno information on the name of the ships involved.

After a,few minqtes, he again received a phone call inwhich he was informed that a tanker named "Tien-chee,,bound for Buenos Aires had collided with a British shipcalled "Royston Grange" and as a result of this, there wasfire on board both of them.

Help from the of both Uruguayan and Argentine Naviesand other vessels in the area was immediately on the spot,but unfortunateiy as alr of us here know, the disasterdeveloped in a tragic way.

Today is a day of remembrance during which we shouldall meditate and think of all those who are no longer withus, and cherish the good moments we spent with them.

Miércoles, 10 de mayo de 1.972 era un día agradable deotoño en Montevideo, algo más calurosol pero sintormentas a la vista, y como es normal en esa ápoca delaño, muy húmedo.

Recuerdo estar sentado en casa con mis padres comohacíamos normalmentedespués del trabajo, charlando de distintas cosas. En unmomento dado, mi padre comentó que quería cenartemprano ya que a la mañana siguienté tenía quelevantarse temprano ya que el ROySTON GRANGE estáballegando desde Buenos Aires, con rumbo hacia el trtorte.

tl .-,---:Alrededor de'las'05100 hs. sonó er teléfono y todos nosclespertamos. Era una llamada de una persona llamada"simonetti" quien era el "vista" en la torre de contror del

puerto de Montevideo, quien siempre estaba en contactocon mi padre, antes de la llegada de los distintos buquesde Houlder's, que hacían escala en Montevideo.

Después de hablar brevemente con este hombre, mi padrese dio vuelta a mi madre y exclamo: "¡O Dios mío!,....hayproblemas en el Río y lo único que espero es que elROYSTON GRANGE ya haya pasado el lugar del incidentepara que pueda ,:entrar hoy ya .que toda la carga estapronta."

Cuando cortó, él explico que el "vista" le había dicho quehabía ocurrido un accidente y lo único que podía divisarera un resplandor color naranja en el horizonte, pero queno tenía ninguna información sobre los nombres de losbuques involucrados.

Luego de unos minutos, mi padre nuevamente recibió unallamada telefónica por la cual fue informado que unbuque-tanque llamado TIEN CHEE, con destino a BuenosAires, había colisionado con un buque de bandera Inglesallamado 'ROYSTON GRANGE", y como resultado de esto,había fuego a bordo de ambos buques.

Asistencia de las Armadas tanto del Uruguay, como de laArgentina y otros buques en la zona, Ilegaron a la zona deinmediato, pero como todos Vds, aquí presentes saben, eldesastre se desqrrolló en forma trágica. l

Hoy es un día para recordar, durante el cual todos,debemos meditar y pensar en aquellos quienes no estánmás con nosotros y apreciar los buenos momentos quepasamos con ellos.

A few days back when I accepted the proposal made to me,to say a few words today, in the name of the ex HoulderBrothers', Montevideo staff, I was assaulted by doubts asto whether my memory would be upto the circumstances,which I confessed to my good friend and colleague of 25years, Federico Sandobal, who assisted me in refreshingthese memories.

I never thought that these would be so many and that theycould flow so easily [nearly at a gallop, I would sayJ fromthat place, where they have been stored in my mind andespecially in rtry heart.

40 years ago, commercial shÍpping differed greatly fromtoday, given that now, the laige cóntainer vJssels call inonly for a few hours at the ports. Before, reefer vessels ontheir voyage down, came with their holds full of generalcargo I I close my eyes and can see the very particular,small chambers of the ROYSTON, full up with crates ofwhiskyJ and they remained in the Port of Montevide o Z or3 days in order to unload and thereafter, continue thejourney to Buenos Aires. B or 10 days' later, theyreturned, on their northbound journey, with theirrefrigerated holds now full of beef, butter and citrusproducts. These prolonged stays, allowed for interactionbetween the crew and the agents and true friendshipswere forged.

It was a time when piers were made out of cobble-stoneswhich as the old port workers used to say, not onlymoulded the soles of your feet but also the character ofthose who walked on them.

I remember that'fateful m'érning, the'uncertainty whichovercame each oné of us, as to what had happened. Thefirst news received via the '"look-outs" Manzano andSimonetti, and thereafter the extent , of 'the tragedyconfirmed by the vessels which had been affected, to thecombating of the fire.

The valiant task of the crewmembers of the UruguayanNavy and the tugs of the National Port Administration andReyla I the tug owning Co.) who carried out thisunfortunate task.

I also vividly recall, the arrival of the relatives who went tothe funeral service held at Holy Trinity Church and thenon to the burial service, in this cemetery.

I remember the pain and perplexity that enveloped all, atthat moment.

I prefer to remember her, by her black-painted hull, withher white superstructure and black chimney with a redband, with a white Maltese Cross within, and not by thatheap of twisted metal in which she remained.

And to conclude, and now yes, referring to the memorieskept in my heart, especially remembering CaptainBoothby, Chief Officer Craddock and my friend, Catering

Officer Bill Hagan, who were the ones with whom I hadmost dealings and whose images remain in the retina ofmy eyes, I wish to render my heartfelt homage to all thosewho lost their lives on that fateful dawn of 11u. May 1972.

And also to all those people, who cooperated in thisemergency and who are no longer with us.

May God keep them in His Holy Glory.

Hace unos días, cuando acepté la propuesta para decirunas palabras hoy en nombre de los ex Houlder Uruguay;me asaltó la duda de si mi memoria estaría a la altura delas circunstancias, lo cual confesé a mi querido amigo ycompañero por más de 25 años en la empresa, FedericoSandobal, quien me ayudó a refrescar los recuerdos.

|amás pensé que fueran tantos y que pudieran surgir tanfluidamente [casi al galope diríal desde el lugar dondeestaban guardados en mi mente y muy especialmentedentro de mi corazón.

Hace 40 años la navegación comercial difería mucho de laactual en que los grandes buques portacontenedoresescalan pocas horas en los puertos. por el contrario losbuques reefer en el viaje de bajada en que venían con las

bodegas repletas de carga general (cierro los ojos y veo

aquellas muy particulares camaretas del Royston repletas

de cajas de whisky) y p.ermanecían en el puerto de

Montevideo 2'o 3 días para la QPeragión de {escqr.Sa d: l"-lmismas para luggo prosegúir vilie,hacia sq,$estino final:

Buenos Aires,-:8 o 10 días despúes regresaban ya en su

viaje hacia el norte para completar sus bodegas ahora sí

refrigeradas, con carne, manteca y citrus - operación que

tomaba nuevamenle 2 o 3 días. Esas estadías prolongadas

permitían que con la interacción entre la tripulación y los

agentes se forjaran vínculos de verdadera amistad'

Eran tiempos de muelles pavimentados con adoquines de

piedra que al decir de los viejos portuarios no solo

moldeaban la planta de los pies sino que también el

carácter de quienes los transitaban.

Recuerdo aquella fatídica mañana, la incertidumbre que

nos embargaba a todos sobre qué había ocurrido' Las

primeras noticias recibidas via los vigías Manzano y

Simonetti y luego Ia confirmació¡ de la dlmensión de la

tragedia por las trasmisiones,de,¡las náves iafectadas, a

combatir el incendio:

La denodada tarea de los tripulantes de los buques de la

Armada Uruguaya y los remolcadores de la A.N.P' y Reyla

que llevaron a cabo una infausta tarea, más allá de su

deber y cumpliendo con la tradición marinera.

También recuerdo perfectamente la llegada de los

familiares que concurrieron al funeral realizado en el

Templo Inglés, hoy la Catedral Anglicana y el sepelio eneste cementerio.

Recuerdo el dolor y la perpejlidad que nos embargaba atodos sin distinción en ese momento.

Y para terminar, ahora sí apelando a los recuerdosguardados en mi corazón, con un especial recuerdo parael capitán Boothb¡ el chief officer craddock y mi amigo elCatering Officer Bill Hagan, de quienes por ser con los quemás trato tuve, mantengo su imagen vivamente grabada

We are here today, remembering and giving thanks. We

are here today because it is 40 years since the,Ro¡zston

Grange and all aboard, were lost. We are ,here;tpday

because only 3 weeks'ago, Alison Booth fwho is here withus, with one of her sons, Niall), contacted Diana via the

British Embassy, from the UK, saying that she wa9-,goming

out to Montevideo.

Alison was a 1"2-year-old, on that fateful 11th.'May 1972.

Their brother Robert, was 16. They were a ciose-knitfamily and proud of Stewart, the eldest of the three, who

won a scholarship to go to Nautical College in Hull when

he was 13 years' old. Stewart's 23'd birthday had been on

April /tt'. He was engaged to be married to Barbara. The

trip on the Royston, was to be his last one, before getting

married, on September Znd. 1972. It was not to be.

On the morning of the 1Ltt'. their mum at work, heard on

the radio that there had been a fire on the Royston. When

Alison and her brother got home from school, theirparents told them not to worry - it had probablf b€€r¡ ¿

small fire.

Houlders kept them informed of any news. Howéver, the

TV news was being aired by that time, reporting thatpeople had been rescued from the sea. It was'whenHoulders phoned, the following morning, with the news:"There are no survivors" ... that the dreadful truth, was

known to them ... as to the families of each and everymember, of the Crew and passengers and River platePilot....

Rtistln; as.' r'dozens of other family-members, would not

fóigé't'thdt'day;'for as long as they live.

Her mother's health, did not allow her to come to thefuneral. It was Alison's dad and brother, Robert, whocarne out, flown out, together with nigh-on 140 otherpeoplé, to the Funeral service, within the Anglican Churchand subsequent Burial, here at this Cemetery. Alison,stayed at home, with her mother.

Life for their family, was never the same, after Stewart,sdeath.

It was as her mother and father's health deteriorated overthe years and as, both of them, spoke to Alison aboutStewart and the wishes they had for Alison to come out tovisit the grave, that finally, this year, that idea actuallytook shape.

Thank you, Alison, for being brave enough, to come all thisway, withr'Niáll. The privilege has been ours' ... to shareacross the miles by email, as we prepared for this day, toshare many details which have been so close to you,within your heart and mind, over these 40 years... to sharewilh 1l gf ud, in this service, today. Thank you.

As we share together, we also think of your husband:fohn, your other son: Cameron and your brother: Robert,all of them, at home in the U.K. We also remember, withthanksgiving, your parents' lives and courage.

As we continued to prepare this service, as the order ofservice was being sent to the printers, so we continued toreceive messages from around the world - and yes, even

receive the news that, today, another person would be

with us: David Watkins. David's brother, Hugh Watkins,

was on the "Royston Grange" - David was 15 years'old 1l

the time and unable to come to Uruguav then ... We give

thanks, that he found the notice of tf,i, J..ui.., in thei.S.in Uruguay's Newsletter and contacted us..". In turn, that

allowed him to contact Alison .... ' , ,

In the sharing of their grief, they have been united and are

here, to share with us, today. ', . ,

Thank you, Alison, David and Niall.

As we have listened, to Michael, Andrew and Mario, to the

list of names of the deceased, to the Word of God and in

doing so, we have sat, within this chapel together ... many

and a mixture of thoughts and emotions have undoubtedly

gone thru our minds. There are some of us, who have

known each other over many years. Mario and Freddy,

both worked in Houlders at the time of the accident.

Peter, Andrew, Diana, Luis, Gustavo, Ian (F) and I, had

fathers who also worked in Houlders at that moment of

history. Each of us, therefore, have different'recollgctionsof what took place. Most of us, knew people who were on

the Royston Grange - we had come to know tfem,,gverseveral years, as that ship ( as others) visited the$e

shores. :.1

Happy memories of times shared with special men, (as

those who continue to plough the seas) ... Yes, we are

here, remembering those who were lost but also to givethanks for each of those lives and witnesses and for thefamily members, who are not here today, For all who insome way, assisted in the weeks following the tragedy ...

alJ, men and women who in different ways, worked thru a

time of muchpain....

And what:does'God, in His word, say to us today? Each

one,. of us. will have a different interpretation of thepassage we have heard a few minutes' ago. Much willdepend on "where we are at" in our individual paths &lives...

I'd like'to take verses 3-4 "Now the dwelling of God iswith men and he will live with them. They will be hispeople and God himself will be with them and be theírGod. He will wípe every tear from their eyes. There willbe no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for theold order of things has passed away".

Have you ever wondered what eternity will be like? TheHoly City, the new Jerusalem, is described as the place

where God "will wipe every tear from their eyes".Forevermore, there will be no death, pain, sorrow, norcrying. What a wonderful truth!

Nó, matter what you are going thru - it's not the last word- " bod' has writr:en the final chapter and it is aboutfulfilment and eternal joy for those who love him. We donot know as much as we would like, but it is enough to

know that eterni,ty, with God, will be more wonderful thanwe can ever imag¡ine. '

Let us hold fast to the hope we read, within Scripture I ofthat new creation.

May each one of us, be filled with that "peace, whichpasses all understanding" ...with the sure knowledge that,despite our failings and sadnesses, we stand forgivEn and,are offered hope and peace, thru the triune God: Father,Son and Holy Spirit. '

Estamos aquí hc,y, recordando y dando gracias. Estamosaquí hoy, porque hacen 40 años, desde que el RoystonGrange y toda su tripulación, pasajeros y práctico, fueronperdidos. Estamos aquí hoy, porque apenas 3 semanas

atrás, Alison Booth (que está aquí, con nosotros,: junte.auno de sus hijos, Niall), se contactó desde Inglateira, üía faEmbajada Británica con Diana, diciendo que'vendría,aMontevideo, en esta fecha.

Alison, tenía apen as L2 años, ese fatídico 11 de *"yo a"1972. Su otro herrmano, Robert, tenía l_6 años. funto a sus

padres, conformaban una familia muy unida y orgullososde Stewart, el mayor de los tres, quien ganó una beca para

ir al colegio Naval en Hull, cuando tenía 13 años. Stewart,había cumplido 23 años el 7 de abril del ,72.

Estabacomprometido con Barbara y el viaje en el Royston, seríael último, antes de su boda, el Z de septiembre de esemismo año. No pudo ser., -:''Temprano por la mañana del 11 de mayo, su madre, en sulugar deltiabajo, escuchó en la radio que había habido unincendio en el Royston. cuando Alison y Robert ilegaron acasa del colegio, sus padres les dijeron que no sepreocuparan - quizás había sido un incendio pequeño.

Houlders los mantuvo al tanto de las noticias. Sinembargo, a esa hora por la televisión, las noticiasinformaban de personas siendo rescatadas del río. Fuecuando, a la mañana siguiente, que desde Houldersrecibieron una llamada telefónica, con la noticia: ,,No

haysobrevivientes" ... que Ia terrible verdad les impactó ... aellos y a cada familia de los Tripulantes, pasajeros yPráctico del Río de la plata ...

Alison, como docenas de familiares, no se olvidaríannlnqa, de,ese día.

L4,salud'de su madre, no le permitió, viajar para el funerar.pl,padre de Alison y su hermano, Robert, viajaron, junto aotras 140 personas que fueron transportadas hastaMontevideo, al oficio de funeral dentro del Templo Inglés-, hoy Catedral Anglicana - y al entierro, aquí en esteCementerio. Alison se quedó, acompañándola a su madre.

La vida para su f¿rmilia, cambió para siempre, a partir delfallecimiento de Stewart.

Al pasar los años y cuando la salud de ambos padres,comenzó a deteriorarse y cuando tanto su madre, como supadre, hablaron con Alison sobre Stewart y los deseos quetenían de que Alison viniera a Montevideo, a visitar lasepultura ... finalmente, en febrero de este año, ia ideacomenzó a concretarse.

Gracias, Alison, por haber encontrado el coraje para venir,hasta aquí, con Niall. El privilegio, ha sido nuestro ...

Mientras continuábamos preparándonos para laceremonia de hoy, apenas unas horas antes de enviar el ,

oficio para que fuera impreso, continuábamos recibiendomensajes de distintas partes del mundo - y hasta ur, ,

correo diciendo que hoy, estaría otra persona connosotros: David Watkins. David tenía apenas L5 años,

cuando su hermano, Hugh Watkins, falleció en !a tragg{iadel "Royston Grange". David no pudo viajar entonces, alUruguay. Damos gracias que, encontró el anuncio en lapágina web de la S.B. en el Uruguay ...y eso a su vez, nospermitió darle los datos de Alison ...

Han sido unidos, al compartir juntos, el dolor y aquí están,pompartiendo junto a nosotros...

Al escucharlos a Michael, Andrew y Mario, a la lectura de

la lista de todos los fallecidos, a la Palabra de Dios ...y al

hacerlo, hemos estado juntos, aquí en esta capilla... sinduda, hemos tenido un sinfín de pensamientos yemociones. Algunos de nosotros, nos hemos conocidodurante muchos años. Mario y Freddy, trabajaron en

Houlders, en el momento del accidente. Peter, Andrew,Diana, Luis, Gustavo, Ian [f) V yo, tuvimos padres que

también, trabajaban en Houlders en ese momentohistórico. Cada uno, tenemos distintos recuerdos de qué

pasó. Casi todos, conocíamos personas que viajaban en el

Royston Grange - a muchos, los habíamos conocido a lolargo de los años - como con tantos otros buques-cuandovisitaban estas costas.

Lindbs recuerdos, de tiempos compartidos con hombresmuy s5psciales [como tantos otros, que continúansurcando los maresJ ... Sí, estamos aquí, recordandoaquellos que fallecieron pero también, para dar gracias

por la vida de cada uno de ellos y el testimonio de losfamiliares, que no están aquí. También, por todosaquellos, que de alguna manera u otra, durante lassemanas posteriores a la tragedia, apoyaron en lo quehabía por hacer ... todos: hombres y mujeres, trabajaronen medio de mucho dolor ...

Y qué nos dice Dios, en Su Palabra, hoy? Cada uno denosotros, tendremos una interpretación / entendimien{o,distinto del pasaje escuchado. Mucho dependerá en"dónde estamos" en el camino de la vida ... , . ,' , '

Me gustaría detenerme en los versículos 3b-4 " "lquiestá eI lugar donde Dios vive con los hombres,, ,,Vivird:con ellos y ellos serán sus pueblos y Dios mismo estartcon ellos como su Dios. Secará todas las lógrimas deellos y ya no habrá muerte, ni llanto, ni lamento, nidolor; porque todo lo que antes existía ha dejado deexístir."

Alguna vez, ¿te has preguntado cómo será la eternidad?La Ciudad Santa, la nueva ferusalén, es descripta como ellugar donde Dios "secará todas las lágrimas". Nunca más:habrá rnás muerte, ni dolor, ni tristeza, ni llanto. ¡Queverdad maravillosa!

No importa qué situación estás atravesando - ella, no es laúltima palabra - Dios ha escrito el capítulo final y en ella,nos asegura que será el cumplimiento perfecto y e! glgzo

eterno, para quienes lo aman. No sabemos, nientendemos, plenamente. Es suficiente saber que laeternidad, junto a Dios, será mucho más maravillosci quelo que podemos imaginarnos. Sujetémonos., de : laesperanza que leemos en las Escrituras - de esa nueva:creación.

Que cada uno de nosotros, seamos llenos de esa "paz quesobrepasa todo entendimiento" ... con la certidumbre deque, a pesar de nuestra falencias y nuestra tristezas,

somos perdonados y contamos con la promesa deesperanza segura y paz, mediante el Dios trino: el padre,el Hiio y el Espíritu Santo.
