Day 07 ChandigarhChandigarh: There are not many sites of historical importance inChandigarh as this is one of the most modern cities in the country. A mostimportant site in the city is the Rock Garden, the place that has beencaptured by millions of cameras. Rose Garden is another importantlandmark and a part of Leisure Valley, a garland of gardens thatornaments the city. Government Museum and Art Gallery displays someimportant stone sculptures of ancient India.

Rock Garden : The well-ordered streets of Chandigarh lead the visitor tothe northeastern edge of the city. It is here that the Rock Garden islocated. Upon entering, the visitor finds winding paths which provide aperfect complement to Le Corbusier's design for the civic grid ofChandigarh. Walls built of terra cotta pots and sherds shade cobblestonepaths, leading to large open areas occupied by pavilions built of concreteand stone. The buildings in the rock garden borrow from architecturalprecedents in India: some can be related to Mughal traditions by the use ofthe chattri (a domed kiosk supported on pillars) and the bangala (a curvedroof whose two sides meet at a single ridge), and the pointed arch; otherstructures pay homage to the simple elegance of village domesticarchitecture.

The Rock Garden can be fully appreciated only by visiting it, by walkingthrough it and studying it. Replete with imagery and layers of meaning, itoffers much reward to those who come here. It is not an Indian monument, but a world monument which speaks of contemporary global concernsthrough imagination and ingenuity. Of the hundreds of architecturalmonuments I visited in India, Nek Chand's Rock Garden stands out in itsuniversality and creativity.Overnight at Hotel.
