BBC NI School Soloist of the Year 2021 This year BBC NI School Choir of the Year became School Soloist of the Year as school pupils, once again, demonstrate their incredible vocal talents. Due to restrictions surrounding choral singing and the mixing of large groups, BBC NI asked schools to enter their best vocalists in the search for BBC NI’s School Soloist of the Year. Congratulations to Eoin, Beth and Maeve (junior) and Charys, Neve and Lucy (senior) who represented Belfast High School in the competition this year. Each submitted a recording of 2 contrasting pieces which will be judged on intonation, tone, quality, diction, interpretation of music and text, dynamics, phrasing and communication. Special congratulations to Lucy who has been shortlisted to compete in the first stage heats of the competition. Lucy’s entries were When She Loved Me (Toy Story 2) and I’d Give My Life For You (Miss Saigon).

Congratulations to:

Charys O’Rourke on passing her grade 8 singing with distinction. Charys is pictured with her music tutor Melanie Topley.

Thirteen teams of 3 competed in our challenge and walked a total of 16,310,804 steps in just under 6 weeks – AMAZING! All teams walked over one million steps but congratulations go to the Red Hot Chilli Steppers (Mrs Cosgrove, Mrs Millar and Mrs Bell) who won the challenge with their team total of 1,638,240 steps. All staff also received a little treat from the Staff Association during the last week of the Christmas term which was enjoyed by all!

Foodbank Donation Thank you to all of our KS3 pupils who contributed to our Newtownabbey Foodbank donation which was delivered to the Foodbank in December. A letter was received on 4 February thanking the school for the 301.6 kgs of food which had been donated. Life at the Foodbank was extremely busy in December, with 421 Christmas hampers being delivered. From April to December the Foodbank fed 4699 people (including 2068 children), which exceeded the previous full year by 1333 and it is expected that this need will continue due to high unemployment as we live through this difficult time.

Captain Dara Devine and the 1st XI team would like to thank Mrs Mahood and Decor Interiors for their sponsorship this year and hope it won’t be long until competitive fixtures can begin once again. Decor Interiors, 324 Antrim Road, Glengormley, is a family-run business, offering the best furniture, home accessories, wallpapers and paints at great prices.
