Dear Rotarians, September has flown by and I’ve enjoyed hitting the road to visit several clubs this month. It is such a pleasure to connect with clubs throughout our great state, and October will be just as busy visiting more clubs. DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE — CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE

This year, we want to see as many Rotary clubs as possible holding World Polio Day events around the world. Need some ideas? How about organizing a viewing party for friends and club members to watch Rota-ry’s Online Global Update? You could also dedicate a club meeting to World Polio Day or create a fundraising event. Remember, every dollar raised is matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

As Mark Maloney, Rotary International President stated, “When we reach our goal, polio will become only the second human disease eradicated on the planet, and Rotary will receive international acclaim. But what mat-ters most is the children who will never again have to face this terrible, disabling virus. Rotary must continue to connect the world in the effort toward polio eradication. It is up to us. Let us finish the job.”

Yours in Rotary,

Lance Singleton District Governor 2019-2020

DOES MY CLUB NEED TO FILE ANNUAL INFORMATION WITH THE IRS? YES!

While Rotary clubs and districts are exempt from paying federal income tax, the law requires all Ro-tary clubs and districts to file an annual information return (Form 990, 990-EZ) or submit an annual electronic notice (990-N). The version a club files is dependent upon its gross receipts for the year. For more information about this requirement and to find out which form to file, please see Which forms do exempt organizations file? at www.irs.gov. What is the deadline to file an annual information form to the IRS? These forms are due every year by the 15th day of the 5th month after the close of your tax year. For clubs following RI’s tax year ending on 30 June, the deadline to file is 15 November.

SAMUEL OWORI MEMORIAL WASH PROJECT

When Rotary International President Elect Samuel Owori passed away suddenly in 2017, many donat-ed to complete a significant WASH project in Ugan-da, Owori's home country. A recent update on the project indicated that a high capacity borehole has been completed and solar powered pumps are filling a 100,000 liter storage tank. Distribution lines have been run to a health clinic and six schools. Hygiene and hand-washing training has been provided. At each school two blacks of latrines have been con-structed and microflush toilets are being built at the health clinic.

CHANDLER—CHRISTMAS WREATHS AND RAFFLE

Chandler Rotary Club is in high gear for fundraising right now. We have two fundraisers going, both of which we have been doing for several years. One is a raffle for a shotgun and the other is our Christmas wreaths. We sell the raffle tickets at different events and from of the businesses that Rotarians work at. The wreaths are a huge success for individuals and businesses alike. These two fund-raisers aid us as we save money towards our projects such as the school kits we do each year. We also continue to have senior students that come every Friday, but more about it next month.

EDMOND—MAISHA PROJECT The Rotary Club of Edmond, Edmond Summit Rotary Club, Weatherford Rotary Club and Stillwater Frontier Rotary Club joined forces and funds to make a BIG dream project come true at The Maisha Academy. Thanks to the efforts, they now have another bathroom facility for their students — complete with a septic tank and flushable toilets. In the Nyanza Province of Kenya where Maisha is located, the silent epidemic of HIV/AIDS has stolen the lives of mothers, fathers and children; leaving one out of every three households headed by a child. Accord-ing to Kenya’s Department of Health, one out of every four adults in the Kisumu district is HIV positive. The school is located next to a medical clinic and they had been sharing toilets. The Health Department in the Province said that they should separate the school and clinic sanitation. Now the school and the clinic each have their own toilets and septic systems which is safer and more hygien-ic for the children. This gift has improved the environment for the students and added value to the school. The project that the Oklahoma Clubs funded provided toilet facilities and a septic system with 3 stalls for the boys, 3 stalls for the girls and one stall for staff members and teachers.
