Dear Rotarians,
With a new year and decade just beginning let’s get the passion again. Practically every team in professional sports has one or perhaps more players who were not high draft choices but have excelled. A prime example is quarterback Tom Brady who was drafted 199th in the 2000 NFL draft and has led New England to six Super Bowl titles. How can draft experts and team executives be so wrong? Easy. You can’t always gauge passion, desire, effort or heart. As author T. S. Eliot put it, “It is obvious that we can no more explain a passion to a person who has never experienced it than we can explain light to the blind.” You can detect passion in someone but trying to predict how far it will carry or what will result are more intangible. But without real passion, a job is just a place to go. Passion is at the top of the list of the skills you need to excel at whether
you’re in sports, sales or any other occupation. As volunteers in Rotary

...at the top of the list of the skills you need to excel at whether you’re in sports, sales or any other occupa-tion. As volunteers in Rotary passion and perseverance especially apply. Passion is the “desire and drive” to motivate us, while perseverance is the “don’t give up, keep going” attitude. We all have multiple reasons for joining Rotary; and one common reason may have been to benefit your career. Rotary’s commitment to vocational service is built on the highest ethical standards in business and professions. No matter our profession, we all contribute abundantly when we conduct our work with integrity and adhere to The Four-Way-Test. As we continue our work to grow Rotary, let us remember that vocational service remains a vital selling point to potential members. Whether it’s your job or serving Rotary there is no substitute for passion. Love what you do and do what you love. Surround yourself with people who are passionate. You’ll catch their passion! You may not always feel passionate, and that’s when perseverance helps! I’ve always admired the passion demonstrated by the late Steve Jobs, who said “You have to be burning with an idea, or a problem, or a wrong that you want to right. If you’re not passionate enough from the start, you’ll never stick it out.” With passion, we’ll grow Rotary! Happy New Year District 5750 Rotarians; and remember, passion never goes out of fashion!

PRESIDENT-ELECT TRAINING SEMINAR 2020
Can you believe that there are only around 100 days until our 2020 President-Elect Training? We will once again next year join forces with our fellow Rotarians in the eastern half of Oklahoma, most of Arkansas and parts of Kansas and Missouri, to bring you a great event full of dynamic speakers and Rotary International officials. While the travel may be a little bit longer, the opportunity to share and learn with over 300 fellow Rotarians will be well worth it, which our Presidents who attended last year can attest to. The District will cover the cost of the event, to include meals on Friday and Saturday, and we ask the clubs to plan a budget of approximately $300 to cover two nights lodging and travel expenses. This is an excellent opportunity to share a ride with a club or two near you! So, President Elects and President-Elect Nominees mark your calendar for March 19-21, 2020, for an experience you won’t forget. If your club has not already, please make sure to provide DGE, Angela Rickman with your incoming Presidents for 2020-21, you can send the contact information directly to [email protected]

ROTARY ROSE PARADE FLOAT WINS AWARD
Rotary’s connection to the Rose Bowl Parade dates back to 1923, when the Rotary Club of Pasadena, California, USA, entered a float. Today, The Rotary Rose Parade Float Com-mittee oversees the process of creating and entering a float, funded by donations from eight Rotary districts and 700 individual clubs. This year’s entry received the Tournament Volunteer Award.
ROTARY FORMS PARTNERSHIP WITH TOASTMASTERS INTERNATIONAL Rotary International and Toastmasters International are working together to provide our members with even more opportunities for personal and professional growth. Toastmasters International is a global nonprofit organization with more than 16,800 clubs in 143 countries. Its members attend club meetings where they give speeches, evaluate the speeches of others, and perform other club duties, with the goal of ultimately becoming more confident speakers, communicators, and leaders. Our organizations are complementary in many ways, but we are each unique in what we offer our members. You can start by learning more about Toastmasters, exploring its resources and public speaking tips, or visiting a local Toastmasters club. Although the structure of club meetings is consistent, Toastmaster clubs are similar to Rotary clubs in that they each have their own personality. If you do not have a club in your area, you can watch a video to learn what happens at a Toastmasters meeting. Toastmasters will create a leadership development program for Rotarians and Rotaractors. A structured, robust leadership and communication curriculum can help members develop practical skills that will serve them not only in Rotary leadership roles, but in their professional and personal lives as well. Effective leader-ship skills can strengthen our clubs and increase our impact. We will provide updates about this program when we have more details. Many of us joined Rotary to make a difference and connect with others in our communities. By working with Toastmasters, our members can discover new ways to network and learn from others, while finding even more value in their Rotary membership experience. DISASTER AID USA, A ROTARY CLUB PROJECT Are you interested in learning more about disaster relief efforts in the United States? Disaster Aid USA provides immediate Disaster Relief and Humanitarian Aid here in the United States to those victims who have, and continue suffering, from the effects of disasters, natural or man-made, using high ethical standards while adhering to the Rotary 4-Way Test.

OKLAHOMA CITY—DECEMBER TEACHER OF THE MONTH Shadonna Watkins received her bachelor's degree in Child Development from Langston University. Since 2016 has taught kindergarten and first grade at Putnam City's Tulakes Elementary. Named Putnam City Schools' 2019 Teacher of the Year, Shadonna's life-long mission is to educate young minds so they understand that learning is fun. She accomplishes all this with the support of her husband and three children. Congratulations, Shadonna!

WEATHERFORD—THUNDER PARTNERSHIP
We are so excited that two of our Rotarians, Jarred G. Jones, Treasurer and Todd Earp, President Elect, are involved in this exciting news for Weatherford. The fall of 2018 Jarred saw on the news that Enid had been awarded a “Thunder Court” and he thought what is that about? So he got online and started looking into it and figured out that the Thunder Cares Foundation and Enable Midstream Partners work together to put basketball courts in communities across the state to promote basketball, Health and Wellness, so he thought why not Weatherford. Jarred reached out to Todd Earp and he said that had been on their radar for a year or so, but they never could get any traction when they tried to find out information, so we reached out to Haley Kliewer and the three of them just decided to reach out to some contacts they had made through various people and they did. They got some information on what they usually like to see in a request, so they put a request together with pictures, community information and they included a letter from the Mayor and Chad Wilson, Weatherford School Superintendent. They had the proposal reviewed and/or critiqued by several people in town, submitted it and waited. They stayed in contact on about a monthly basis and then were contacted this summer that Weatherford was one of the finalist. Later in the fall 2019, the committee requested an onsite visit, loved the town and here we are today!!! On January 3rd, the Thunder, and city of Weatherford dedicated the new court with a day of festivi-ties and a Thunder game-day experience.
STILLWATER—ROTARIANS PROVIDE BACK PACKS FOR KIDS
An annual holiday service project of Stillwater Rotary Club is providing back packs of food for K-5th
grade students attending Glencoe, Yale and Ripley schools. This year, members of Centennial
Rotary joined in the project to provide two meals for kids over the holidays. Nine-hundred food
sacks (1800 meals) were prepared for distribution to project schools. Members of service clubs at
each school help distribute the back packs to students. Funds for the project were provided by club
members.
After filling 900 food sacks, Rotarians gather for a picture to celebrate completion of another service project.

CHANDLER—JUNIOR ROTARIANS AND HOLIDAY PARTY
Chandler Rotary Club had two events which we would
like for the district to know about. The first is of our
student Rotarian program, which two seniors from our
school come each Friday when we meet. The two
students pictured are
Abigail Lanoue and
Tate Radcliffe. Tate
played the guitar and
they both sang a
wonderful ballad for
us as their pro-
gram. It was so wonderful ! We also had a Christmas party for
members, spouses, students and any others who would want to
join us. It was potluck, so everyone brought a dish and a Dirty
Santa gift for the game. The food was soooo good and everyone
truly enjoyed our informal time together.
EAST OKLAHOMA COUNTY—DISTRICT GRANT DELIVERY
